Mists of Pandaria Opening Sales Stumble

I don't doubt that WoW's in decline, and has been for years, but excluding the digital sales is completely nonsensical. As far as Blizzard is concerned, they're not even selling a game, they're selling an "account upgrade". The simplest and most convenient way for a player to do this is through their account page. They don't even link to the store if you visit the Blizzard website and click the big "buy now" button in front.

Why this is completely useless news that tells us nothing:
Everyone bought digital because it applied the upgrade before Mists was released, unlike physical copies, aka, you can login directly on release.

It's very easy to see who bought digital because you got an achievement before the release if you bought collectors digital edition, which I saw endlessly from guildies and people in town getting.

Lets extrapolate a conclusion based on woefully insufficient data! Thank god you guys are video game journalists and game industry analysts and not something actually important like a rocket scientists or Nuclear Engineers.

There is a significant hole in the Lazard estimates, as they don't include digital sales. Things have changed considerably in the digital space since 2010, and digital is bound to be a larger proportion of overall Pandaria sales than they would have been for Cataclysm.
"Significant" is just underestimating it. At this point, boxed copies probably make up but a fraction of anything Blizzard sells.

It'll recover those numbers as soon as people start coming back from Guild Wars 2.

They always come back.
not sure that holds as true any more. sure SOME might go back, but i highly doubt WoW, at this stage can pull all its lost subs back cause they added Po as a playable race

incomplete data is incomplete.

Why aren't digital numbers included in these stats? Get with the times people.

Maybe WoW isn't getting worse? Maybe people are realising (slowly) that MMO's are shit in general.

It's obviously declining, what do you expect?

Nothing lasts forever, especially in this fast moving industry. While it was amazing that the amount of revenue that this game raked in per month grew as long as it did, it was going to peak sooner or latter. Fans shouldn't really worry though, remeber how long Ultima Online has lasted (15 years to WOW's 8) on far less money? It will still take a considerably long time for this game's servers to be deactivated, considering the large amount of money it'll still make, and even then the private servers will likely be up for longer than the official servers.
This isn't even considering the possibility that Blizzard has more tricks up its sleeve to further postpone the enevitable shutdown if not raise back up the growth rate of their revenue.

Honestly great expansion I whole heartly tell anyone whose played wow and enjoyed it DON'T GO BACK! You'll loose your life all over again!

Its... dare i say it close to the best its been since maybe even TBC. If it keeps the quality level its at then this could be a big recovery from Cata but that'll have to be seen in the coming months and updates.

Thats my opinion and hate me for loving it but pandas ain't that far from big cow men lets not double standard damnit :p

meh, in another 12 months they'll start talking about the next x-pac, or they'll tell us all about the new MMO they've been "secretly" working on that's ready for release, I think Blizz has a long way to go before they're really in trouble.

WoW is not dying. Are you people drunk? Even if it lost half its subs overnight, it'd still be pulling in more money and have more people playing than any other MMO. Everquest, despite being worse than WoW in pretty much every way, managed to put out like 20+ expansions.

And you think WoW won't even last that long? Yeah keep thinking that.

Having bought the digital edition, like all my wow-playing friends I have to say this seems rather early to say much about pandaria being the end of wow. Having played it for a few days, I'm more than happy with it, the opposite of how I felt at the start of Cataclysm.

Time will tell, as always, and releasing within a month of the most anticipated MMO ever (that actually somewhat lives up to the hype) was obviously going to hurt initial sales. Lots of people will be waiting for the price to drop anyway, £30 is a LOT for an expac with monthly fees.

To be entirely fair, we're talking about an expansion pack to an eight year old game selling over half a million copies. That might be "disappointing," but I'd say WoW's had a pretty good run, even if it is "dying."

PS: Non-MMO player here. I fear and loathe my fellow man, but I am impressed with the staying power of this game. Hence the comment. I shall shut up now.

I only put about 10 levels in a trial version before realizing it wasn't my thing...

From an outsider who loves other Blizzard games, I'd say it's simply the content of this expansion that is the major problem. Cataclysm was an interesting idea.
It had marketing value which gave me interest to go back and try a game I didn't care for.

Mists of Pandaria just misses the mark. It's such a niche part of the warcraft world and does nothing to make you want to visit it. They just missed the mark on this expansion idea IMO.

The cracks are growing larger. The beast doesn't have much longer to live by my calculations.
It has 10 million subscribers. It could lose 75% of it's player base and still be viable as a subscription based mmo.

Also, all the QQ about 'Wow sucks now', ugh, so ridiculous. WoW is as good as it has ever been, we've just been playing the same game for 8 years. People, you're going to get sick and tired of it eventually! It's not a reflection of a decrease in quality, if anything the fact that a lot of people managed to play for 8 years without getting terribly bored speaks volumes about just how high quality a product it is. Doing largely the same task over and over for 8 years will eventually wear thing, no matter how much fun it was.

Ex WoW player.

Just popping in to say that whilst ignoring digital sales is a massive failure I still hope that this is the beginning of the end. I aint one of the alarmists (Been playing since release up until I hit 85 and bought my motorbike) who has been saying "THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END" since the days Blackrock opened.

But I do think that for many people Pandaria has no appeal. None of my old WoW buddies are booting it up, most of them are either playing Guild Wars or Torchlight. None of us have touched D3 since a month after release and none of us can be bothered with Starcraft any more.

I guess what I am saying is I think it is time Blizzard died. Or at least, most of Blizzards IP died. WoW lore is convuluted and fucking retarded (Giant zeppelins, planes, paratroopers, tanks, guided rockets... And swords. Its basically the cold fucking war. With swords. I just cannot get into it any more). Diablo 3 was a kick in the teeth, not because of the Always Online bullcrap (I have no issue with that) but because it was boring and samey and every fucking character of the same class was identical to you in every respect but gear.

So.

I hope this is the end of Blizzard. Or at least the end of WoW. Maybe they can produce a new game that I might be interested in. But I will not be suckered into WoW ever again, I will never buy a product associated with the world of Sanctuary, unless they intend to retcon most of the new Warcraft lore (Or set a sequel hundreds/thousands of years into the future/past) I will never touch a Warcraft title again.

If anything because I know if I get on WoW again it will only be a matter of time before I come across Worgen/Panda sex. And that would scar me.
