Miyamoto Decides When Nintendo Releases Next Console

At Nintendo, the creative desire of its legendary designer overrides everything.

Nintendo of America hotshot Reggie Fils-Aime has constantly denied the release of a "Wii 2" anytime soon, saying that the time just isn't right [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99017-Reggie-Nintendo-Not-Ready-for-a-Wii-2-Just-Yet], and when developers start coming to Nintendo with new ideas that the Wii can't execute, things would change. But, in an interview with Kotaku, Fils-Aime said there's one player that could change this in an instant: Shigeru Miyamoto.

According to Fils-Aime: "When Mr. Miyamoto goes to Mr. Iwata and says. 'I have this great idea and I can't do it on the Wii,' that's when there will be a next generation console. What that includes we'll see." Miyamoto evidently has some pull at the house of Game & Watch. Fils-Aime also reiterated that Nintendo is not all caught up in HD, 3D, and giant flatscreen televisions the size of mountains, and would rather create a new console that innovates in the same way as the Wii.

Though Miyamoto is "very interested in a high-definition experience," the next Nintendo console would be something "consistent with what we brought to market with Wii and with DS," Fils-Aime said. "I can tell you is that we will innovate. We will provide something new. Something that the consumer and the industry will look at and say 'Wow, I didn't see that coming." With a big zinger, he also took a nice shot at Sony and Microsoft, saying: "I think we would have been embarrassed to do what our competitors are currently doing," presumably referring to Microsoft's Natal and Sony's Move [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99047-Behold-the-Official-PlayStation-Move-Trailer]. I hope someone gave Reggie a high-five after that one.

With the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 both looking at a supposed minimum remaining shelf-life of around five years (or longer), according to execs from companies [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98924-Microsoft-Natal-Wont-Divert-Core-Gamer-Focus], Nintendo hasn't really made its plans clear on that of the Wii. However, Fils-Aime feels that due to Nintendo's strong 2009 holiday season "the Wii still has a very long, very vibrant life in front of it." Nintendo is known for its secrecy, so we'll have to take Fils-Aime's word for now.

Well we all knew Miyamoto really did pull all the strings, but I really hope the wii stays for at least three or four more years, I see a lot of potential in it.

I knew that Miyamoto was the real guy in the big chair. WIth his big brain i'm sure he'll keep coming up with new ideas to keep the Wii healthy.

I'm fairly certain that Miyamoto could rule a fair chunk of the planet if he wanted to. I mean really, he has a multi-billion dollar company at his disposal, plus an innumerable amount of fanboys (who I may or may not be a part of) who would only be too eager to serve him.

Eh, we'll see. I've purchased every nintendo console (both home and hand held) on release day since the N64, but i think my wii has been gaining a little bit too much dust over the last couple of years. Nintendo will truly have to spark my interest for me to continue the tradition with their next console, unless they release a new handheld (not another DS) inbetween now and then; they always seem to preform well in my book.

Possibly a 3rd pikmin could do the job. but only if nintendo gets out of this realm of motion control. When people told me that i was dumb for buying a wii on release day, and that motion controls were going to be a short lived gimmick, i tried not to listen to them, but now i can't do anything but agree with those nay-sayers.

Surely the next innovation in games consoles would be something that doesn't need to be replaced in five years? Something that is more similar to a PC...like a PC. The 360 and I'm led to believe PS3 allowed you to upgrade your console without buying a completely new machine, although that was limited to the harddrive. But what if the next step in consoles is to step back towards PCs and allow people to upgrade certain parts in the future. They wouldn't make as much money selling consoles but they could get it back from selling the parts. It would be like the HDDVD player for the 360 only less redundant.

Unless the next generation of consoles have something even more spectacular to offer then I don't know whether I will bother to get one until the prices inevitably drop to half of the release price within two or three years.

Replaceable console parts is probably something you might see in the next 20 years or so. the problem is that you need to make an interchangeable system that the average consumer can adjust with relative ease, yet be sturdy enough to last, without tightly secured hardware.

The console price wouldn't be too much of a problem, Gaming companies have known that the majority of the money made from video games is in the software, not the hardware; this is why Sony and Microsoft sold their consoles for less than it's actual production value at launch. Wii just made the smart move by making the console affordable for anyone and everyone, even though it lacked the graphical appeal of other systems.

Nope, no bias here.
That's correct, there is no bias there. Reggie deserving a high-five after that comment has nothing to do with being a fanboy of any company.

When it comes to motion control what Nintendo's competitors are doing seems to be exactly what Nintendo is doing.

That isn't bias as such... it's the truth, Sony and Microsoft are just jumping on the "motion control cash cow" and Sony have made a blatant copy of the Wii controls, adding a lightbulb at the end of one doesn't make them significantly different, just stupid looking. At least Natal is nice and techy and needs plenty of fancy words if you ask "how does this work" if you asked anyone at Sony I'm sure the answer would be marginally similar to the answer you'd get from Nintendo when asked the same question.

But on topic, I think Nintendo are going about it the right way if not going out of the way to do so they're making a new console when they NEED to rather than when the money slows down, my only wish for the new one is for it to have some guts to it...

Exactly how I feel, I play like 4 games on my wii, and I haven't bought a new one in a long time. Hopefully mario galaxy 2 and zelda will be a return to nintendo actually making games instead of relying on the shovelware to bring in the moolah.

Also, Off topic, but your avatar is awesome.

There going to do what they do with Mario.

Re-release the NES with all the games on it and let the fanboys buy everything.

Then they are going to make a Deathstar out of money and destroy the world.

I just hope they'll stop teaching their fanboys to stop hating high definition.

I swear I hear Nintendo fans every day saying how high definition is killing gaming is games with good graphics are instantly terrible.

Sure, do whatever you want, but don't think the other two players are just going to sit around doing nothing.
