Why is it that no matter what is released and no matter how many copies that are bought nobody seems to ever like the games released these days? I feel we live in a great time for games, granted there are more sequels than I would like but most games seem to me to be of a high quality and suffer only minor flaws which only the most pampered of ninnies would complain about.

Granted, my favourite games are from about 10 years ago but this isn't because they have got worse or cater towards the "casual gamer" but because I have other more exciting things going on in my life and find it more difficult to get fully immersed in a title. I guess what I am trying to say is that we (and I do include myself in this) are spoilt by a long line up of high calibre titles and we want, nay, demand that they meet overly high expectations and tear them asunder should they meet our unrealistic demands. I appreciate that developers have a duty to create titles that we want due to the high price that we pay for these games but is there not possibly something the community could do to make ourselves sound less like a bunch of whiny 9 year olds whose mothers have bought us a kinder egg only for us to complain about the nature of the tiny terrapin encased within.

So, with that in mind, do you feel that the games community is populated by spoilt brats who expect the world or by people with realistic expectations who are being let down by big money developers failing to meet our requirements?

Have Fun!

PS. Sorry if punctuation, grammar and the rest are poor...i am at work and rather than working i am on this site...oh well

Because unbelievably some people are never satisfied.
Some people will just not like a game.
Same with music, same with movies.

We're an extremely entitled community with unrealistic expectations.

Yeah, we're probably gonna be disappointed a lot.

Games = Expensive

I haven't bought a game at the full RRP in years, I get nearly all of them used or just buy cheaper indie games. And im usually broke, so I have to watch what used games I buy as well >.<

People go on about how poor games are today as it is considered cool to be never satisfied (see Yahtzee)
I think games have personal improved heaps and we consider them to be worse due to nostalgia tainting our memories.

Because when I buy a fancy brand new games for a fancy brand new system and then notice a distinct drop in quality from a decade old game that I purchased for a fraction of the price I tend to be disapointed.

Good points and I do believe that nowadays games are developed to cater more "casual gamers" and there is nothing wrong with that. You just made me realise it :)

Hmm... Its most probably because of the increased cost of having to make a game and therefore, the slight increase in cost to buy a game. However, I am realising that more and more people are whining about the small faults in otherwise a great game (Eg: the shooting mechanics in any of the post-apocyliptic games such as Fallout 3 and the STALKER series).

Im going with another group that isnt mentioned. A more demanding population of gamers that expect alot more compared to back then as the cost of games increased.

EDIT: Oh, and get back to work.

'cause its human nature to complain. We like complaining.
That, and we're always thinking that we should be getting it our way.

Spoiled brats that we are.

People do have unrealistic demands for games. They generally expect great graphics, great gameplay and (to some degree) a great level of immersion in one package.

I personally find most games today to be too samey, which is why I haven't purchased anything recent in a while, save for a few discounts on Steam, but even then it's usually for low-budget or indie titles. Then again, I may be the minority here since I actually buy and play the underrated but original games much more than the blockbusters that follow proven formulas.

Because at $120 AUD per new game I expect my money's worth.

Personally, I like a lot of the games that have come out recently, although my favourite games are fairly old like Okami and Sky Odyssey.

I think it's partly to do with the fact that while games have improved greatly from a technical stand point, they aren?t as good at telling a good story. Many recent games have been called out by people for having a lacking story like Dead Space, Resistance 2 and Red Faction Guerrilla to name a few.

I'm gonna try to be civil, but I really hate apologists for major industries, including film, music, and video games.

My take? Games started making real money, so big business came to town and ruined the fucking party - like he always does. Did he bring pretty pictures and cinematic direction and epic soundtracks? Of course. He also brought unrealistic deadlines, focus-tested characters, and copy-pasted play mechanics. With guys like Kotick, you can even make a billion fucking dollars and STILL have the boss breathing down your neck and telling you what to do. The higher the stakes become, the more control executives and other non-creative types will attempt to exercise. The end result is a lot of very flashy, samey, and soulless drivel. But there's money at the top, so everyone is trying to get there. If they have to make a bunch of shit to get there, so be it.

TLDR version: purely profit-driven humans eventually suck the life out of everything.

I've always had a kind of motto or saying that fits nicely here:

"If you do not have anything to complain about, you have nothing at all"

If I give someone my money I expect it to be a quality product.

I wouldn't say we all moan; to me it just sounds like you're describing differences in opinion.

It's burnout syndrome for both gamers and industry. We just seen it all already, and played it all, the changes are minor, only details in specific areas seem to still grab our attention and that doesn't last long.

Its hard to be equally excited for a jump from 4 million to 5 million polygons when you already experienced big steps in the industry like monochromatic to color, 2d to basic, low-poly 3d, low-poly 3d to detailed 3d or the whole goodness that multiplayer brought.

Its in human nature to compare new things to past experiences and in that matter new games just don't seem to do enough to satisfy us.
That said i enjoy a few of modern titles, but overly i feel there is too many shooter and mindless action/bashing games produced while personally I'm more of cRPG/strategy gamer.

There is always people who are never satisfied, and I suspect there always will be. Simple as that. That is, until about 10 years, and people look back and say "Remember the good ol' days with Halo 3 and MW2?"

I think its a little of both.
"Waa waa waa, we want prettier graphics"
"Okay, but we'll have to compromise on the bug-testing, the AI, and the-"
"YAY SHINY THINGS!"

But also, there does seem to be a worrying tendency amongst publishers to crank out bad sequels as fast as they can, rather than give the developers enough time to create a fitting effort; or indeed, come up with something new and interesting.

Off-topic a sec: Has anyone else noticed the irony that in creating this thread, the OP is moaning?
