I love the constant church-bashing going on in this thread. You are all so original. In any case, to the point. If the mother dosnt want her son to play the game, and "would never buy it" who got it for him? If you truly dissaprove soo much, why don't you just make the console disappear one day. The kid needs to learn to listen to his mother. Reminds me if the 10 year old girl that was tazed awhile ago...

Is it wrong that I read that and though, "well that explains everything"?
Not at all, delusional mental states are a fact of life. Not all of us have the courage to call a spade a nutbag.

or maybe the mom is shit. i was always told it takes two to fight so one time my mom was screaming at me n i walked outside to the backyard and sat down for me to calm down n so she cant... i mean wont yell at me. she doesnt like the neighbors hearing her yell. so while im literally sitting there for about 10 mins the police come out of the house and say whats up basicly. i tell em what happened and they told her not to waste their time again and to "take a lesson from your son. separate from each other and cool off before things get out of hand." i loved that day sooo much but i received hell for it later though lol. besides it was on a saturday so no school so no big deal. parents need to get with the times and be more negotiable. why bother fighting over something little? also on a final note this just shows her incredibly poor parenting skills.
Wow, you really showed her. That's... great? One time I got into an argument with my Dad, he proceeded to try to beat the crap out of me, and when he couldn't, called the police on me and said it was me that was doing it. Of course, when they showed up, they could tell he had been drinking and smoking crack all night, so they arrested him instead. Boy, that really showed him. Now I'm 25 and we do our best to ignore it because it was a very embarassing situation for both of us once you get over the whole "HAHA you got served I was right!" attitude.

Parents need to get with the times, huh? Yea, parents should let their kids do whatever they want. Hell, stay up all night playing games, who cares? Get with the times! Grades start slipping? Eh, fuck it, nobody cares about school anymore! Drop out, why not?

A good parent does their best to set reasonable boundaries for their children to follow, so later in life they can deal with the reality of having rules that they have to follow and be accountable for. Not staying up until 2:30 in the morning playing games is a reasonable boundary. If you don't think that is the case, I would like to know what else parents should get off their kids backs about. I will agree that this was a poor choice on both of their parts, and arguing does not normally solve anything, but I don't know that she is a terrible parent for this one experience. She obviously flipped her shit, probably after flipping it repeatedly with this kid.

She needs some help with her parenting skills, that's for sure. I hope people reach out to her to help, however, instead of condemning her for her poor choice.
wow... God help your kids if you have any or any future ones. "embarassing"??!!! are you fuking insane!? yes, a father beating their child while drunk AND high is "embarassing". lmao ya of course now your older i'm sure you both want to ignore it but it sure as hell isnt because it was "embarassing". embarassing is when my dad was drunk and decided to attack me and i droped his ass. i hate violence but it doesnt mean i wont fight and he learned that real quick. "oh you play games all day and dont do shit" yes i reply while i have straight A's and do as much as i can in weight training. its never a '"HAHA you got served I was right!" attitude." with me. its an "i'm right as usual and now your pride has been hurt" attitude. if i was a HAHA person then the next day when he made a joke about it with a fight club reference i would have laughed and said ya i sure beat ur ass good or something but no, i cired cuz no matter how stupid my parents are i love them and live to help ppl not harm them.

no i didnt say let them do whatever they want but parents do need to get with the times. i was a straight A's student and yet i couldnt play games all day. one hr a day... excuss me? so let me get this right i cant interact with a video game all day but i can sit and vegi in front of the TV watching whatever is on all day... stupid and flawed is my mother in the terms of everyday life yet she has masters degree.

you are right that parents need to set reasonable boundaries for their children to follow but not only resonable they also need to be smart about it. like the one hr games 23 hrs tv... dumb and uncalled for. staying up til 2:30 in the morning? maybe, maybe not...if they werent doing anything the next day...er... later that day then why bother him. although be sure to get his ass up early like 8ish and make sure he doesnt sleep all day so he will go to sleep at a good time so he can get up for school...oh wait its winter break... hmmm.

Which leads to the obvious question: who gave him the game then? I mean, someone should have thought that giving an MA15+ game to a 14-year old was a bit iffy.

what if he was playing little big planet?
god knows I've been designing a level on that some nights and you turn to the clock and see it's 3 in the morning.
This reminds me of a story about someone who called the cops coz their kid opened his xmas presents early.

Now, y'see, she should have just picked up the console and thrown it out the window.

That's parenting.
BOOSH!

/agreed

That's how my parents would have dealt with that.

The interesting part of the story, that's sadly absent, is apparently she called the police as a statement to the strict rules of how you can and cannot punish your child.

Erm...

If she doesn't approve of GTA IV, then why does she let her son play it?

This coupled with the fact she called the police over an argument leads me to the conclusion that she is in fact, a moron.
Yup.

"AAAAAARCH!!! OH THE PAIN!!! AAAARRGHHH!!!
"WAH! WAH!"
"There we go! It's a boy!"
"*pant* Fuck that hurt. But on the bright side, that's it."
"Well, uh... you still have to raise hi-..."
"Hey, you know what, I think I can do this a few more times, doc. See you in about a year."
"Uh, ma'am, don't forget the ba-..."
"Bye!"

14 years later...

"BOOHOOHOOO!!! My kids don't respect me!!! Ban all videogames!!! It's all their fault!!!"

/facepalm

1. she has the support of her church. this alone says alot, especially cause if u think about it, you pray before a ancient symbol of torture and consume symbols of flesh and blood (assuming your that religion, im athiest so i dont got a clue.) when u got the full fledged support of the followers of the people who do this, then we got a problem.
2. parents are blaming video games because they are dipshits. seriously, this is like blaming the radio for a kid getting into a fight. its not the radio, its the parents who are to damn retarded to actually care about their own childs life. you know someone killed themselves because they played wow, and that a baby suffocated because the parents were busy playing wow? most people would say "so wow must=essence of all evil" no, it was the dumbass parents who werent paying attention to their own child. its called neglect, not anything video game related, even if it was the game that caused the neglect. neglect happens everyday, everywhere. just because theirs a new entertainment media doesnt mean that all problems can get traced to it alone.

so to wrap up this uncomfortably long rant on stupid parents, this lady is a moron.

Mom Calls 911 Over Son's Non-Stop Gaming

A stressed-out Boston mother recently decided that the best way to handle her young son's non-stop videogaming was to call 911 on him.

When Angela Mejia woke up at 2:30 in the morning last Saturday and realized her 14-year-old son was playing videogames in his bedroom despite being told to go to sleep, she marched into his room and unplugged his console. Then, as the inevitable argument ensued, she took matters to the next level: She called 911.

"I have support from my church, but I'm alone," she told the Boston Herald [http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/20091221the_911_on_video_game_obsession_frazzled_roxbury_mom_calls_the_cops_on_teen_gamer/]. "I want to help my son, but I can't find a way."

He had apparently been playing Grand Theft Auto [http://www.rockstargames.com/iv], an "exceedingly violent" game that Mejia said she strongly disapproved of. "I would never buy that kind of video. No way," she said. "I called [the police] because if you don't respect your mother, what are you going to do in your life?"

Police responded to the scene and were apparently able to talk her son into turning off his PlayStation and going to sleep". "They were just like, 'Chill out. Go to bed'," the boy said.

"Clearly, it's a very, very rare situation for someone to call the cops," said Grand Theft Childhood [http://www.grandtheftchildhood.com/GTC/Home.html] author Lawrence Kutner. "That she went to the extreme of calling the police tells me more about her level of frustration than anything else."

Yeah clearly you havn't met my mother then. Honestly, she dials the cops in her sleep sometimes. But yeah she unplugs my PC, attempts to kick me out the house and then threatens to call the police. Why can't they leave us to go insane on our own?

She immediately lost any credibility when she mentioned support from her church.

So, naturally she's just another crazy on the pile.
