Just becuase he likes playing videogames it doesn't make evil, even if he's playing GTA4 it does not mean he's gonna hotwire a car and shank an old lady. But the kid is a brat and she should have thrown him over her nee and spanked him.

Yeah, really. Calling the police? Come on! Just beat his ass and let the cops do the jobs they were actually intended to do, like preventing CRIME!

Now, y'see, she should have just picked up the console and thrown it out the window.

That's parenting.
No that's wasting about $300.

That mom sounds kind of...dumb. Calling the cops on your son b/c he wouldn't stop playing games? Really? And if he stayed up on a Friday night, unless he had something important to do on Saturday, so what?
I'd be more than willing to waste $300 if my child was so intent on disrespecting me.

You've lost if you think money is more important than your relationship with your child. The problem is the child not listening because of the system. Get rid of the system and the problem is on it's way to being resolved.
That's true, but I was just talking about if you wanted to throw it out the window. That IS a waste of $300. Just hide it or sell it lol.
But... but... but...

Flinging it out the window is so much more hardcore.

eh it doesn't surprise me what people call 911 for anymore. I worked at a 911 dispatch center once and about 90% of the calls are BS. Most of the time I would get people calling for directions to the nearest (insert location here) and probably one of the best was a guy calling to ask what time and station was the super bowl on.

not really that big of a deal just unplug the console and take it away for a day or so no need to call the cops she totally overreacted

I figure this probably had more to do with the kid's generally bratty behavior then videogames in paticular. Still, pretty wierd.

Wow, that guy's mom's is certain yet another one of those video-game-blaming-over-reacting-zealous that I keep hearing of yet surprisingly never got to truly meet.

but if that lady disapproved of GTA-IV so much, why'd she let her boy get a copy of that game in the first place?

the only people like that guy's mom that I could've met would be 2 school librarians I once knew, who are needlessly touchy on what sites people go on in their library computers.

1. Stealing it
2. Renting it
3. Borrowing it from a friend
4. Getting it as a gift
5. Paying for it
6. Finding it (slimmer chance than others)
1. Unlikely since places that sell and rent games don't keep games where people can get them.
2. Unlikely since there is a 93% compliance rate with the rating system in the US
3. This is the most likely, but if his mother didn't want him playing it and found out, she could have waited until he got up and taken the game out of the console and hidden it until he could take it back to the owner.
4. Maybe, but if the gift giver knew that the mother didn't want him to have it then it's a sign of disrespect to her from the giver and could be taken care of the same way as 3 without a return, maybe by snapping it in half.
5. See number 2
6. This is oddly more likely than any except gift and borrowing.

you're an atheist, hence know nothing about religion,
In most cases atheists know more about religion than the religious, we aren't blinded into only seeing the good points of one faith and can still acknowledge the failings in all of them. Christianity has some good points, the belief in charity and the big one (that is mostly preached and nearly never practiced) is to love thy neighbor as thyself.

But how many wars have been started by atheists trying to wipe out all religion? Now how many have been started by a religion trying to force it's views on people that don't want those views?

This woman overreacted, and if I had been the 911 dispatcher I would have told the woman that 911 wasn't there to help her raise her child. And if she called back, I would have sent the police to pick HER up for clogging the emergency lines, this was not an emergency. What if she had taken the last line and there had been a fire, or someone was being beaten or raped? This woman would be responsible for help not being available for a real problem. She has no parenting skills, and judging from her responses she really should take some parenting classes (I only think children should be taken in extreme cases.)
I'm fine with people being Atheist. It's your choice, and Freedom of Religion is important. But what I can't stand is the Atheists who take every opportunity to bash religion. If I say "Oh my god" to something, and you say "Who doesnt exist!" (Ive actually had that happen before), your not clever, and your not expressing your religion, your trying to be an ass.

OT: The mom is crazy! You should never call the police over something like that. Turn off the console, turn off the electricity if your that scared of your CHILD

Ok she didn't need to call 911 on her kid. She should have just taken the game and the PS3, if it was can't remember, and just take it away and tell him he has to earn in back by showing her more respect and not take any of his crap. If he can't listen to her then he needs to lose it and she needs to start acting like a mom and not let him be a little brat and this problem will never happen again.

"I have support from my church, but I'm alone," she told the Boston Herald. "I want to help my son, but I can't find a way."
/facepalm.

I really hate these people

Holy mom-aggro batman! This kid has no concept of strategy, if you are playing games way past bedtime at least be wary. I'll bet he left the sound on or his door open or something.

But the police? Seriously? Aren't they for criminal activity, and not for use by some desparate parent who is too stuborn, tired or stupid to own up to their "I'll call the cops, young man!" bluff?

Wow, first post and someone manages to single out the one use of a religious term, and start bashing religious folks.

A good-sized chunk of you are massive hypocrites.

She has the support of a church. This can be substituted with "She has the support of a community of like-minded individuals." But, in yet another thread, the Escapist bigots swarm onto the page and flame away.

How do you people get off calling yourselves ANY better than the religious people you so vehemently despise? The church here has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, and yet we have people saying things like this:
Disaster Button said:
"I have support from my church"

Is it wrong that I read that and though, "well that explains everything"?
Which demolishes ANY attempt to consider yourself fair, open-minded and tolerant.

I could say "Is it wrong that since you're an atheist and I thought 'Well, that means you're a pretentious prat!'" Is it at all acceptable as a sweeping stereotype? No, it is not!

Frankly, intolerance is what started the Crusades, Inquisition and all those other moments you're so keen on pointing out. How is it acceptable for an atheist to treat religious people in the exact same way?

This is a horrifying display of immaturity and intolerance, especially from a community that prides itself on being so "mature and fair to everyone."

Either be tolerant of everyone, or no one at all.

That kid had better watch out his mother has got the support of her church and we know what happens when they start a crusade
Or an inquizition. They'll come round and burn your consoles with holy fire, cleanse your PC with the hammers of heaven, bring salvation to your videogames with bless'd bricks.
no one expects... THE SOCCER MUM INQUISITION!!!
