i suggest reading Kutner's book, i have used it in a few research papers. it is intriguing. he basically tells everyone to chill out over video games.

How is this article biased or sensationalist? Because the kid gets hold of a game, the mother is a bad parent? Everything the kid does is the mothers fault, there is no personal accountability? Did you ever do anything bad when you were a kid, and if so, was that a direct result of your parents not being good enough?

Yeah, when kids don't listen to their parents it makes them a brat. And I didn't say the kid was definetly going to go nuts on his mom, merely presented it as a possibility.

Wow, ok. Stop, right there Mr Extremist. You can't take one post and explode into evidence that proves the entire forum is full of biggotry and ignorance, which ironically enough is extremely ignorant in itself.

Now to correct you. I didn't say it said that once. I said it "read" like that so let me explain what that means, it means that that is what I got from it, my interpretation. Which, apparently I am not alone in thinking judging my the posts here, some of which are just made to laugh at her, and other posts which are more serious. This does not by any means mean that I think someone's viewpoint is worthless because they have faith, unless it is something along the lines of "Don't worry, God will save your endangered family" and even that that's simply because I'm Athiest.

So my adivce to you is to not take things to seriously and learn to appreciate a little goddamn humour, if you said something about Athiesm or made fun of my beliefs in the same manner I wouldn't over react like a psychopath and launch into some self righteous speech about how the world is bad like you.
How am I an extremist? You have the evidence in front of you. Sure it's not the WHOLE forum community, I am not an idiot, I can tell the difference. I don't go around saying if an Atheist has an opinion on something it must be wrong because they don't believe in God, not only because it's an ignorant position to take, but because it is intolerant of others and that kind of person has no place in a discussion forum, because if you're going to outright dismiss someones claims over something like that you are certainly not interested in having any meaningful discussion.

Enough people have already said that her viewpoint is worthless because she is a Christian. Read the thread. I can appreciate humor, but being a bigot and close-minded is not funny. It is not offering both sides a chance ot have a good chuckle, it is taking one group of people and saying that what they have to say doesn't matter. Jokes should be funny to both sides, and if it isn't it's just an attack.

Just because YOU wouldn't overeact does not mean other people won't or aren't warranted to.
You're extremist because your denouncing the entire forum and calling them biggoted, especially when thats not the case, most of the time.

I also find it quite hard to make jokes about the entire religious community in one post, I work with that I'm giving. But rest assured I do find racist/sexist/anti-belief humour funny, when not made in an actual serious context, not because I am racist/exist/and anti-belief but because I'm able to appreciate this kind of humour without being offended. And you're right people don't react in the same way, obviously, but I could just as easily have attacked you for trying to label me as some kind of anti christian when that isn't what I am.

And just because a lot of people have dismissed her views because of her religion doesn't mean I did the same with my post, so I'd appreciate if you didn't lump me in with all of those people thanks.
And another thing: what the hell does "warranted to overreact" mean? Doesn't overreact imply that someone reacted more than warranted? Maybe "excused for overreacting" would make more sense. Though I don't think said person can be excused for her... potential... um... warranted overraction?
Um, what? I didn't even say warranted to overreact.. me no understand.

What SHE did is technically against the law, what he did wasn't. 911 isn't made for parents to get help with disciplining their children. And if she didn't approve of the game, how did he get it?
I am aware it is against the law. Never said it wasn't. How did he get the game? At the risk of repeating myself:

1. Stealing it
2. Renting it
3. Borrowing it from a friend
4. Getting it as a gift
5. Paying for it
6. Finding it (slimmer chance than others)

I said the level of the problem on this forum is getting out of hand. I don't see that as denouncing anybody, just making an observation using this thread and my time on this forum and what I have witnessed as evidence. I also said nothing concerning your faith or lack of it. I didn't label you as anything. I don't have much interest in arguing over semantics, what I meant was some people may have a legit reason to overreact, therefore it would be warranted for them to do so. I am sorry if I counfused you.

As much as I did fancy having a go its got nothing to do with being uneducated or bigotted. Its about the fact that it reads like she is seeing games as unholy and has to claim that even with Jesus' support the evil of video games is still corrupting her son. As that is insane, she therefore loses credability and is laughable.
I want you to answer me one question: Where in the article does it say anything about her thinking video games are evil, or where does it say her decision was based on her faith?

This is getting out of hand. People that want to make these assumptions should be moderated. The level of bigotry and ignorance on this forum is way out of control, and nobody seems to want to step in to take a stand. I have been in the R+P section for a few days, debating with people there, and I thought that section was bad. It's tame compared to the comments going on here.

I joined this community because it stood out from others on the net, because of the great userbase here. I don't know what has happened, but it's starting to become like the Wild West, and I no longer feel like I am welcome here, because of my faith. After all, if you are so quick to admonish some woman in Boston because she makes a small statement about seeking help from her church, why would anybody think I have any credibility in anything I say? It is clear the majority of this community does not want Christians around, and intend to be completely disrespectful towards them.
This post reminds me of a younger me. Of course I gave up on trying to get any shred of understanding or tolerance out of this mass of antagonistic and ignorant folk quite some time ago. Now I just come here on occasion for some videos, the few good articles, and to look down on the forum community as the giant pile of hypocrites they are.

"oh the media always labels games as evil! They just don't understand! If only they were less ignorant! Also this woman mentioned 'church' in this story so she is obviously crazy and thinks video games are the devil."

Its painful how easily you people find stupidity in others and yet never seem to notice the others finding just as much stupidity in you. No one is perfect, and everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. Innocent before proven guilty? Apparently not. More like guilty before even proven guilty, that should be the new motto of the forums or something.
I can't help but feel that you are contributing to this. Yes, anonyminity can lead to stupidity, and stupidity can exist. So can conflicting viewpoints. So can trolling. But coming to a forum just to say "forums are stupid" reminds me of an alcoholic that comes to a fraternity party to complain about the quality of the beer.
Oh hey! Its conveniently intrepets my posts to fit his own arguements man! RIGHT ON QUEUE!

No your analogy is flawed, horribly, as per usual. An alcoholic that comes to a fraternity to complain about the quality of beer... really? I was commenting on how saying the media doesnt understand games and generalizes about them, and then subsequently making generlizations about the lady mentioning church in this article. This is more like a group of alcoholics who explain about how stupid and dangerous it is for people to binge drink all the time, while also drinking a shit ton themselves... to keep it in the alcoholic analogy you can relate to.

Stupidity can exist? Anonymity can lead to stupidity? Where are these points even coming from, certainly not from me. I'm talking about humanity. Every fucking person on this planet does stupid shit. No one is perfect, we're all flawed, and everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. So stop making assumptions and responding to what your assumptions tell you I'm saying, and take my words for what they actually mean. If I don't talk about anonymity I'm not making points about it... bringing it up like I made points about it and then dismissing it is like the straw man fallacy... you're constructing an opponent you know you can beat and then beating it down.

Firstly, if she doesn't approve of the game how'd he get it into the house?

Secondly, why is it conveniantly GTA that's ALWAYS the cause here?! I mean, I don't even particularly like the game, but the amount of press headlining it is nigh on ridiculous.

When you read that line, you can hear credibility die.

Note: Whats with the violence of GTA4? would they not complain if it was Madworld just because its on a "family" console?

Edit: My first quote ninja :D
Where did he get the game I wonder?

I'm guessing from a friend.

But yea, the "church support" made me chuckle.

Here's an idea, if he plays video games too much, then why in the hell does he still have the PS3 in room?!. Take the damn thing away completely and while you're at it take the TV away from his room as well. If he gets pissed, then tough shit. If he still complains, give it away. The kid is no doubt a spoiled brat, but he obviously got that way somehow and its apparent his mother is the reason.

Yeah it bugs me when people create arguements out of thin air, mostly because if it was done to me it would probably piss me right off but you'd think someone would at least try to make sense, especially during an arguement. And thanks, its nice to make sense some of the time.

I'm not on a stupidity and hypocrisy free pedestal... if anyone sounds like they are its you looking down on me right now. I think I'm stupid and hypocritical too, but I also think you made an 'ass' out of 'u' and your 'mptions' just now by assuming I was looking down on everyone like some kind of fucking elitist piece of shit. I think we're all stupid and hypocritical, thats how human beings are. Its painful and I hate it, but it cant really be changed. What I was saying, is that people should be given the benefit of the doubt, which you clearly failed to do in this post. I'm sorry if this is your knee jerk reaction to me saying anything even somewhat critical about you or the forum you call home, but I wasn't looking down on anyone or being a complete elitist asshole... unlike you.

I just grow so tired of having to explain myself 8 freaking times and still have no one understand what I'm saying. I'm tired of people being blatantly hypocritical and ignorant and then touting this forum as the most advanced and intelligent place on the internet. I'm tired of this community and their apparently infallability while when I say anything at all, all of a sudden what I said gets transformed into what someone else assumed I was leading towards, which I never actually said or meant to say, and then all of a sudden I'm a complete asshole for thinking human beings are flawed, or that having double standards is kind of hypocritical.

I could go on forever, but I'm not sure if I'm even saying anything, or leading up to some kind of point. All I know is that no matter what I say you'll take it and twist it into some kind of stupid arguement or point I didn't even make and then twist it to make it seem like I'm a complete moron. If you really don't think every human being (including you and me) are flawed and do stupid things then I doubt I can convince you otherwise.

That's it. There officially need to be widespread, minute long PSAs on when to call 911 on EVERY station.

As for this situation, bleh. Just another case of parents who don't know anything about parenting.
