Haha, I played a version of Drug Lords for the TI-83 Calculator. I'm loathe to say there is any correlation between that shitty game and the fact that I have since started doing drugs... but...

Hang on, she's the moron who took drugs, she's the one who ignores constant warnings that are everywhere! And I bet that she didn't play a game that told her... "IN-JECT, IN-JECT"

So, her daughter OD'd on heroin and fell into a coma. I agree, that is a tragedy, but I fail to see how it warrants speaking out against an iPhone app that is, after all, just a game.

Not to mention that Drug Wars was the EXACT SAME GAME back in the early '90s and one of my friends had had his DAD install that game on his CALCULATOR. What next, no graphing calculators except those provided by the school?
Drug Lords on a calculator? That ought to weed out the non-mathematicians. Hopefully they won't crack the screen. They could use the calculator to do their homework, so they wouldn't seem like a dope.

Even I have to apologise for those.

Sure, you were dumb enough to not check what she was doing/on, but that doesn't mean it's your fault, right? I mean, YOU don't have to take the blame, right? It's all the video games fault! Of course, it's so logical.

Asshole.

The parents cant look after her every wake second of her childhood and teens, it doesnt have to be the mom's fault that she started with drugs, i mean, your kid playing games you think are bad can be prevented because it's happening near you but you cant follow your kid around everywhere, he/she will eventually be alone with friends and do things you dont want her to do like smoking or drugs. And this new game, did they HAVE to include drugs? i mean, if they want a trading sim, put in a bunch of normal consumer goods like food, electronics, games/films or whatever. It might not have a gigantic effect on kids and make them take drugs the second they start playing it but it will maybe make drugs and dealing seem like not much of a big deal. I hate parents who start shouting ''BAN THAT!!!ITS BAD FOR TEH KIDZ!!1111'' every time they see a game that has anything to do with violence or a game they dont like for some reason but this game could of been made different without any loss of quality.

Everyone's kind of hit the nail on the head and hammered it through 17 yards' worth of wood on the whole 'she was a neglectful parent, stop blaming video games, etc.' view (which I agree with, sorry if it sounds like I'm ragging on you guys :c <3 ), but is it okay if I point out that I still think the game is really stupid? I mean...Drug dealing as a game? Bad parents or not, it still presents the IMAGE that game-players only care about murdering people for cars and drugs like they do in the virtual world. Even if the mother's argument is flawed, the gaming company could've at least avoided this by, uh, NOT MAKING A GAME ABOUT DRUG DEALING.

It's not even that fun, it kills off all the musicians and TV stars eventually, and it's, well, stupid. :/
The only 'drugs' I ever want to deal with continually are Mario's Super Mushrooms, and even then I hate people who label the Mario games as 'virtual drug-pushers'...

Actually those kind of games can be very fun. Back during high school I had a very similar game on my graphing calculator (calculator games were all the rage freshman year because they were pretty advanced back then and you had just gotten this brand new awsome calculator). A bunch of the kids had it and we spent a lot of class time playing it because it was actually a pretty fun way to pass the time.

So I kinda see how this would be a fun thing to have on your phone to just pull out and play while your on the bus or waiting for something, just to pass the time. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

EDIT: Also woops didn't realize that this was gonna be a possible thread necro

Anytime someone says "youngsters" when talking about children (let alone people in their late teens) I stop listening to them. They clearly have no fucking clue what they're talking about. And why the hell does that women care what game comes out on the iPhone? How did she even find out about it?

I'm going to pose a serious question: "What if I had children, and decide to let the world raise them for me and have no hand in it myself..."

Maybe if she'd taken a few minutes out of her day to do some parenting, her kid wouldn't be having drug problems. But hey, whatever. Video games are the new black kids on the block, so it doesn't really matter, now does it? No matter who is at fault, video games are to blame.

I couldn't help but laugh at that.
Looks like a very addicting game

when i read the title i thought about bringing up the "people are eccessivly quick to blame video games for their problems, i think the parent should have payed more attention to her kid in the first place argument". but closer inspection sets off my bad idea alarm. the thing is, is that while a game with drug dealing in it is rather entertaining becuase of the business aspect, (witch is also the reason why viva pinata is fun) a game with real places in it is going to stir up controversy becuase theres s good chance someone will abuse its features. and last but not least, any parent who buys there kid an iphone is spoiling them too much.

Okay, let's also take drugs out of music, television, books, and films!

Seriously though, if we took away things that could be slightl impressionable, everything would suck.

I hate the way people always want everything nice and clean in games, but ignore it in other mediums of the media.

Blah.

Here's an idea for any parents like this, who for some reason are perusing this forum: get off the computer, right now, and hug your freaking kids! Then, turn off all the T.V.s in the house, turn off the game systems, sit everybody down, and play a game of trivial pursuit.

Instead of blaming everything under the sun for your kids' problems, try doing something with them. You have time. Do it now.

(Yes, I'm "pushing" social interaction with your family. Clearly I learned it from a video game :p)

Y'know, I haven't read past the first 5 or so comments, so maybe somebody else here thinks the way I do, but I'm surprised so many Escapists support drug use. Yes, it's dumb that people blame video games for horrible life decisions. Yes, it was the mother's fault for not paying attention to her daughter. But seriously, how immature are we? "Hey, I don't get high enough in real life, let me play a game about it." Seriously? Is this really what you people want? Seems a bit ridiculous.

I dont think simply saying she's a bad parent is fair. I've known a few people who have had great attentive families and good lives but for some reason or another have turned to drugs and ruined themselves. But I dont believe it's right to blame the game or point fingers. Kids are always going to play this kind of thing and I dont think that anything bad will come of it.

Perhaps occasionally checking in on what your children are doing, isn't such a bad idea after all...
What?! And show some effort as a parent?! What are you smoking? Oh... nevermind...

/sarcasm

This is the same story we have all heard a thousand times but it still pisses us all off.

Parents ought to be parents of their kids. Thats that.
