Ah, I see what you mean.

Although I'd say it's one of the reasons that she is my favourite characters, it's quite sad to see the ending and realise that things didn't happen as she had hoped, but when you find out the truth about her, it was an amazing moment.

I wonder what the next part of the series will be like. I have not see then two films, but am told they are basically a re-cap of the series. Then the third film will continue on.
She's one of my favorite characters too, actually. I'm a sucker for the quiet, strong willed type.

The movies are just that, recaps, and I haven't seen them, so I can't really offer an opinion either way. Reviews seem to indicate that they're pretty good though. :p

As am I, especially seeing as in anime they seem to be a rarity. I guess it's also why I like Nagato Yuki from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I have not seen the films either, although that's because in the UK they have not been released in any shape or form as far as I am aware (UK is always slow for anime stuff -_-). I will watch them when I get the chance.

Anyway, heading off topic here so...

OT:

Lucy from Elfen Lied. She is pretty much the definition of a fucked up character, and she is also pretty awesome. Although I cannot stand her alternative personality.

Rorschach from Alan Moore's Watchmen. I'm struggling to write why so instead I will implore you to read the graphic novel and watch the film. He's insane, but you may find yourself rooting for him.
I don't know about "insane" but he's certainly unorthodox, it's not like he's done anything he shouldn't have.

Astrid, the leader of the Dark Brotherhood, in TESV: Skyrim.
´
On one hand, she is a psychotic killer who wouldn't hesitate to kill an entire city if coin was in the deal.
On the other, she is a nice person overhaul, dealing with the initiates and fellow members as a family, and
killing herself when she lets them down by making a deal with the Penitus Occulatus. And even then one of the clauses was that the Brotherhood members wouldn't be killed, a promise the Penitus broke
.

My replies will probably not differ from many others but I'll add my 2 cents anyway!

Jack from Mass Effect. No really, I think it was an interesting character with an interesting development, and something badly needed among all the "saintly" and/or "perfect" people.

Dexter Morgan. Not sure how much needs saying, he's Dexter Morgan. He's about as fucked up as it gets, and still manages to be one of the most interesting characters with interesting developments in..well...TV history.

The Joker. Insanity personified. Amazing insane character coupled with humour. Dark knight version is possibly the best movie example of him, much thanks to the actor. A shame that actor had to pass away, and that the joker character then ended up acting as inspiration to an actually insane person.

Sander Cohen from Bioshock 1. I feel as though he's always forgotten because Andrew Ryan is such a damn good villain. Sander Cohen is an artist obessed with death a mortality and considers his masterpiece to be the frozen corpses of his failed apprentices. That's a bit fucked up if I say so myself.

There may be characters who are far more fucked up, but nobody is fucked up in a more beautiful way than my beloved Oerba Dia Vanille.

She acts like a giddy little girl through the knowledge that almost every bad thing that's occurred throughout the story is somehow her fault. As the story progresses and the depth of Vanille's error becomes more apparent, she just becomes more emotionally fragile. All she ever wanted to do was make people happy.

I suppose it isn't fair to call him insane because in a world like Watchmen, he can be viewed as the only sane one. Maybe mentally disturbed is a better term?

Hell yeah! Not a day goes by where I don't quote him!

OT: I'll go with Nami from One Piece.

As a little girl, she had her mother figure killed in front of her by the pirate who enslaved her village, named Arlong. Arlong agreed to sell her village back to her if she could raise 100 million berries (the currency in that universe). He even brands her with a tattoo to remind her of her servitude. And on days when she's not risking her life trying to raise the money, she's forced to draw maps for Arlong.

Then just to be an asshole, Arlong gives away most of what Nami saved to corrupt Marines when she had only one voyage's worth of money left to get her village back.

This explains why she's so money hungry. She associates money with the hope of freeing her village. She denies this of course after everything blows over, but I don't buy it.

Francis Dolarhyde from Red Dragon and Dennis Cleg from Spider.

Both characters portrayed heartbreakingly well by Ralph Fiennes (my favourite actor, if you couldn't tell) both wonderfully broken and misunderstood characters who can only be loved/pitied once you understand what happened to make them so twisted.

To bring something new to this list, I'll go with two characters from a wonderful-wonderful flick True Romance:
Drexl Spivey, and Sicilian Mobster Vincenzo Coccotti (best mafioso role ever, imho).
Both (particularly, Drexl) defy description, you have to see it to believe it.

As Vincenzo calmly states in the conversation: "Go tell angels in heaven you've never seen evil so singularly personified, than in the face of the man who killed you."

I cannot believe that nobody has yet mentioned Minatsuki Takami. There have been Deadman Wonderland references here and yet nobody has considered the most twisted girl I've seen in anime for a long time. Minatsuki is basically a 17 year old girl who looks sweet and innocent at first, but is actually the most manipulative, sadistic, brutal person you will ever see. She first appears in Deadman Wonderland trying to escape the prison where the series is set with the protagonist, Ganta, but fails to get away, only for it to turn out she orchestrated the whole thing simply to give Ganta an injury before their scheduled superpower fight (the Carnival Corpse) the next day. She manipulates him through the whole jailbreak attempt while staying apparently sweet and pure by 'accidentally' revealing her breasts and other parts of herself and 'accidentally' ripping her dress.

In the Carnival Corpse itself we find her power, her 'Branch of Sin', is the ability to turn her blood into whips which she uses to attack her enemies - she proceeds to not only attak her opponent, Ganta, but also her own brother when he tries to intervene, and uses her brother as a human shield against Ganta's own attacks. Throughtout this, she constantly insults both young men, and claims that clearly neither of them have "ever pelasured a woman" - she discusses this with her own brother, for crying out loud. She also turns out to be a sadist to the point where she gets off on violence, but not as tamely as you'd think - she's literally having an orgasm through the entire fight right in front of her brother and Ganta, and constantly references sex throughout her insults. Ironically, after the fight we see that she's actually very protective of herself and won't even allow any guy in the same room as her when she's getting changed, despite her otherwise provocative nature.

For losing the battle she's sentenced in the prison to have a part of her body removed (fortunately the good guys manage to influence it so she only has a haircut) - she reveals that previously she's had a kidney and half her stomach removed for losing Carnival Corpse fights. This is probably the first time, by the way, that we see any sign of humanity in her, even after she is willing to let Ganta (who only beats her by headbutting her) and her brother live following the fight. Even then she flies off the handle if she even suspects Ganta (who's interested in someone else anyway) of perving - bear in mind she's the one who was getting a literal orgasm from nearly torturing him, both physically and psychologically. She kind of joins the good guys as a minot character later, but even then everything about Minatsuki is twisted and wrong.

She became that way when her mother abandoned her during the Red Hole Incident (a massive earthquake that destroyed Tokyo) ten years earlier - her mother saved a primrose in a pot instead of her own daughter. She thus has a bizarre obsession with flowers, particularly primroses, and uses them to help manipulate people. She also murdered her own father with her Branch of Sin power, and let her brother take the blame (he didn't actually know she was responsible) - not to mention she faked an entire set of abuse instances to make sure her father and brother hated each other, and lied that her father was sexually abusing her as part of that - she was maybe 12 or 13 at the time. And since being incarcerated in Deadman Wonderland she's been subject constantly to experimentation, torture, and literal death matches almost every day, and again probably been getting a new orgasm every day from those fights. So yeah, the girl's completely messed up.

Then again, there are plenty of messed up characters in the series, and they tend to be my favourites anyway. One guy goes psycho and flips out when his assassination plan fails against the good guys, and another young girl (maybe 8 years old) slaughtered her entire kindergarten class because of her whacked out mother's teachings, got sentenced to death to be served at Deadman Wonderland, and spends her time killing the superpowered Deadmen (the good guys) with an oversized elasticated hammer. It's a crazy anime/manga, and I love it xD.

CAPTCHA: funny farm - yes, that's exactly where these people should all be... ;)

The Mayor from Prentisstown in The Knife of Never Letting Go (a book that is easily one of my most favorite books and is recommended to everyone). He seems likes a cunning psychotic individual, but he is actually insane, in the truest sense of the word.
Aww, ninja'd.

TV show: Solomon Grundy from Justice League Unlimited. I wish I could include the Android from the same show, but he just stopped developing any character after his return.
Book: "Gabriel" from Doppelganger by David Stahler
Movie: Andrew Detmer from the movie Chronicle
Anime: Viral from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. His species was pretty much created for two reasons: To be playthings for his king and to exist as sentient beings...with a weak will and very little hope.
Oh oh! One more I forgot:
Webcomic: Fumbles from the webcomic Goblins. I honestly feel for him more than Dies-Horribly. Those characters were named by a prophet when they were born, consider how those names affected them.
