I forgot Area 51, don't forget the inspiring collection of weapons, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Pistol, and Rocket Launcher.
Oh yeah and the and the benchmark level design! of

Urban Environment
Desert Terrain with Urban Surroundings
I played a demo of the original (I think). It had an awesome regenerating-lightning-sticky-grenade launching gun that I haven't seen in any other game.

Duke Nukem Forever. Fills that category nicely.
according to Yahtzee's review its basically a melting pot of all the FPS styles of the last 12 years. thats pretty damn unique.
... what? i didnt say that made it GOOD.

ANY modern-day shooter. This includes all C.O.D. games, Medal of Honour, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, etc, etc.

Same weapons/gadgets,
same, generic military dialogue,
same story(Government Conspiracies+Stop the Terrorists/Russians),
same brown, boring, unimaginative environments.

In my opinion, the entire modern-day shooter genre needs to die.
be fair: rainbow 6 is nothing like CoD. its more tactical. ghost recon, i havent played. and the modern MoH? that was based on a real event. the problem is you can have it in the future, then you're ripping off Halo. you cant have it in the modern day: thats been done to death, same for the WW1/2 games.

i'd agree that the recent CoD games are all basically doing the exact same thing. i dont think any games is really generic. they make efforts at their own storyline. and people seem to be confusing 'ripoff' with generic.
Half Life is kind of generic: aliens invade, bad. guy has to stop them, good.

Duke Nukem Forever. It's not the worst game I've ever played, but it was so boring and lazily thrown together that I can't bring myself to ever pick it up again.

I only got through page one of this thread, but all of the responses being the same, i think it's safe to assume it's still that way. Gears is a good series that others copied so that one can't be it. same for certain CoD games.

My vote goes to all the Hollywood movie cash ins. With the exception of the first Kung Fu Panda game, I haven't played a single one that was worth a fuck in any way. That's as generic as it gets.

This is a bit of a weird thread. Half the answers seem to be taking a popular and original game that introduced a lot of new ideas and then blaming it for the legion of unoriginal rip-offs that got made of it. Prime example: calling Gears of War generic. I don't know what people think the original Halo was ripping off, except in the loosest possible sense of it copying Doom by being an FPS.

It seems some people are confusing the terms "generic" and "wildly popular".
And this.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Also the whole muscle-bound, "I swear I'm not on steroids it's just the armour", Space Marine genre needs to take a break, a long break.

Red Faction: Armageddon. Not even the destroy/repair mechanic could save this game. It's about a white shaven-headed space marine killing aliens alongside his black friend and spunky female sidekick. Eaaarrg.
Let me guess... You haven't played the first one have you?
The first Red Faction? Yes, I have.

Why do you ask?

Pretty much every Call of Duty. I'd say Gears of War, but I don't see many third person shooters in general, so it's hard to say the gameplay is generic. Just the characters.

When we're attempting to portray most games in existence as "generic", we could most likely refer to a large portion of them. Whether adventure, action, or fps, each game can commonly relate in some fashion to another particular game or series. After all, a lot of the great titles that we have today came from inspiration while others were entirely unique.

There are, however, different levels of which we could define a game as being generic. While most would beg and differ that Halo is entirely generic, it was the first of it kind to employ cinematic and story-driven mechanics into gameplay while mostly taking a lot of notes from the Alien trilogy in terms of dialogue, encounters, and plot. So yes, while being defined as mildly generic, the game did possess some characteristics that made it itself, as followed by the later versions.

I believe that we could be harshly exaggerating the levels at which Halo could be defined as a generic series.

If you want to see actual titles that resemble their counterparts entirely, take a look at most MMORPGs out on the market today. How about that new Chinese FPS that was recently announced which looks exactly like Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield Heroes if they had a bastard child.

That is generic.

Dragonage was quite generic, although I did really enjoy it.

but if you wasn't some really bad generic games, Id have to direct you to 90% of the Wii's games. There were so many uninspired low budget games on that system.

Also, pretty much every sports game ever released, (madden, tony hawk, etc)

My I propose minecraft? Think about it before calling me a troll. Its a game, with a pretty bland world (sure there is a LOT of unique BLAND to explore, but think of how much there really is) and at the time of this post, we have... 4 normal enemy types, and 2 special, with only a hand full of tools, and a BUILDING BLOCK SIMULATOR. The most interesting things that have come from it have been user created, painstakingly built generic fantasy adventures or remakes of existing games, in in a very limited game engine. Sure, multiplay is neat, but not vanilla... id say its mediocre...

Sorry for picking apart your game notch... at least terraria has a handful of enemy types and weapons....

maybe im just an action gamer... meh!
