You kinda sound like a bit of a Gears/xbox fanboy with that description. Yes Gears did popularise chest high walls etc. But they are impossibly muscled Space Marines wearing armor fighting aliens but just in a slightly diffeent context to what is in other generic sci fi shooter like Halo.
Being intelligent enough to know the backstory of a game makes me a fanboy now, huh? Well, I guess it's better than someone who just hates without playing for a reason that makes no sense like you are. Anyone who thinks Gears is the same "sci-fi space marines VS aliens" deal as Halo might as well be walking around wearing a t-shirt that says "I HAVE NEVER EVEN TRIED TO PLAY OR UNDERSTAND GEARS, I JUST HATE IT BECAUSE IT'S POPULAR."

Anyway, this "xbox fanboy" is going to go back to playing Ghost Trick on his 3DS after I finish writing this, because that's totally what xbox fanboys do. Have a nice life kid.

Never said you were one, just said you sound like one. I have played both Gears games and I am aware of the story and no matter how you try and spin it, its still over sized space marines fighting aliens. To me that seems quite generic. And looking at the trailers for Gears of War 3 it looks quite a lot like 1 and 2 which to me seems kinda well... generic.

The new Warhammer 40,000 actually has the term "Space Marine" in the title.
Because Warhammer 40,000 was the first thing to ever introduce Space Marines. They are probably the most popular army in the Warhammer 40K universe.
Although I agree that Games Workshop definitely introduced lots of people to Space Marines, they weren't the first. That was probably Robert E Heinleins Starship Troopers (the book, not the movie) in the 1950s

My (at the time) 8-year-old cousin picked out the PS2 version of Ghost Rider at the local rental place and then made me play it so he could watch me.
Did he at least enjoy watching you play? I miss the days of playing video games with my younger brothers, when they were still of the age that their enjoyment of just seeing blood on the screen made playing any game much more fun for me

Less a game, and more a series: Call of Duty, same for Medal of Honor.

Neither takes a step either forward or backwards. They are just dancing in a circle..
I'd think they're standing still.

Good point, my mistake there.

dead to rights retarded, the only way to play this game is with a friend who acts like it is a satiric take on the state of gaming and he is doing the commentary

I can't say I've ever enjoyed looking at a Halo game or been surprised by a Halo weapon, alien, or vehicle. The Needler came close, but come on, them's some slim pickin's.

I've always thought of the Ratchet and Clank games as a sort of anti-Halo... They actually know who their target audience is, the environments are saturated with life and color, the weapons and aliens are all creative and stylized... That wasn't really relevant, but I think the two franchises draw an interesting comparison.

I personally think the Witcher series is thoroughly void of any noteworthy characteristics, apart from its utter self-satisfaction and juvenile indulgences.

Yeah, he had a blast:) That made it worth it. Whenever he comes over now (with his younger sister in tow), we generally play either Super Meat Boy or the New Super Mario Bros Wii and I have a lot more fun.

Speaking of the blood thing, he LOVED watching me play bits of the first two God of War games, which made me a bit uncomfortable;)

Halo (Let the shitstorm begin)

Halo 1 - guy in future killing aliens
Halo 2 - guy in future killing aliens
Halo 3 - guy in future killing aliens (Now with alien best friend)
Halo ODST- guy in future killing aliens (With stealth)
Halo Wars - guy in future killing aliens, WAIT....with strategy
Halo Reach guys(s) in future killing aliens before the other guy who kills aliens steps in.
Halo 4 - guy in future killing aliens (Microsoft's milking of the Halo franchise begins)

The halo francise is the most boring generic game franchise I have ever played. You know when you went wrong with a franchise when most of the fanboys are twelve and the only way to see the "Story" is not play the games and read the books and watch halo legends.

The only reason Halo is and is always going to be popular is because it was spawned in the right time at the right place.

I'm having trouble thinking of one, to be honest.

I guess I'll go with just the gameplay of Kane and Lynch 2, but nothing else about it. Every other aspect of that game was unique and original in its ability to inflict horrible pain on the player.
