The most brainless in my opinion are the Halo Marines. They drive like old people with blindfolds on.

Dom's AI in Gears 1&2 was pathetic. I remember trying to fight RAAM in single player "Duh, don't ya worry Marcus, I'll get 'em! Ugh, revive me!" Dom was always more of a handicap than a help.

When Carmine died in Gears 2 I was pissed because he was the most useful out of all the supporting characters.

Halo 3's and Bethesda's.

Halo 3: Their aim seems okay, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T LET THEM DRIVE. If your on foot, they might hit you, and if you're a passenger, good god. Every time I let an AI drive a Warthog, they either drive me straight off a cliff or into a rock where the enemies hastily turn me into goo with god knows how many lasers. They don't seem to grasp your line of fire very well either.

Bethesda: Remember Oblivion? Remember how AI's just love running in front of you in the middle of a fight, wedging themselves forcefully between you and an enemy just as you were finishing up a strike? Well, I can remember a good number of accidental murders happening exactly like that.

For me this would have to go to the otherwise excellent Gears of War 2 in both campain and multiplayer. First off in campain as Yahtzee already mentioned the friendly AI has a frustrating habit to leave you to die. And in multiplayer death matches when you are the only human player and the rest are bots (don't have live at the moment) there is nothing worse than dying and having to watch your AI team struggle to fight while unable to even figure out where the enemy are.
What is the dumbest AI you ever encountered and how did it effect you as a gamer?
Why yes, they do have the tendency to leave you to die, considering that you can't be revived in single player. Please don't quote Yahtzee on the things he was outright wrong on.

Call of Duty: World at War. Seriously, the AI in Gears 2 is glorious compared to the idiots in World at War.
I've seen Nazi soldiers run past three of my allies, not more than a foot away from them, to get to me. The fact that the Nazi soldier ignored them bugged me enough but the fact that my team didn't even flinch at his presence killed me inside.
This wasn't a one off either, I've seen it happen on multiple occasions, right before I had to turn it off, for fear of breaking my TV.
Don't even get me started on that. Oh god but that's frustrating.

I thought the marines in Halo: CE were worse than those in Halo 3. At least in Halo 3 you can be the gunner and the driver AI will do okay. In CE they usually just drove into a wall or wedged themselves into some rocks and then sat there doing nothing.
Dude, the AI couldn't drive at all in CE. That was one of the big features in Halo 2.

Play Annex, with bots, they seem to jump in intelligence then, have even picked up some of my cheap tricks, friendly AI can be frustrating at times. Playing something like warzone, will force the AI to drop its standards because it has nothing to measure against but itself.

L4D bots are amazing in some aspects and the worst in others, but i'd rather have 1 bot + 3 man team, than a full Human party.
Skill in bot matches for the AI seems to switch sides occasionally too, have you noticed anything like that?
Yes, actually they do seem to jump around abit in that sense, i do recall matches where i've destroyed the opposing team (360 > 35), then there are matches where no matter how much effort you pile in you just can't break them enough to gain ground, those matches arent total landsides, but yeh i have felt kinda helpless (180< 360).

Call of Duty 4(well, every game after CoD:UO)

The AI walks to one of the available locations, hides behind the "chest high wall" there and it will start shooting.
Friendly soldiers are the same, but even worse because they refuse to move if you're not in the exact spot to activate a script telling them to run to their "chest high walls".

I can't even explain how annoyed I am thinking about it. It's difficult to even call it "AI" because there's no "I" in it. Even Doom has great AI compared to CoD4.

This, as they say. It's kind of surreal to be fighting in a big war only to see the enemy soldiers walk right past your squadmates, neither side shooting the other ("hey" "'sup"), just to attack you. The Hell? It's one of the reasons why I think CoD5 singleplayer is thoroughly disappointing. (Fortunately the fun multiplayer makes up for a lot.)
The A.I. in World at War was awful. What's weird is that they used the CoD4 engine, but in CoD4 the A.I. was better.
But the A.I. in Mercs 2 takes home the top prize for awful A.I. It is simply the worst A.I. I have ever seen. It can't drive, can't shoot, gets confused, won't follow orders, and dies after falling off of 6-foot-high crates.

the reason for the stupidity, of AI in games like halo 2, 3, and too human are that, the player is given more than enough power to slaughter enimies and the troops are designated cannon fodder.
gears 1 & 2's didn't glitch on me but once in 5 playthroughs, and i did find some strategic use for mass effect teammates.
but, beyond a doubt, the worst AI is from mercs 2,

Empire at War

Campaign AI in Total War games (haven't played Empire yet, it probably has better AI, you know, finally). Also, after installing a patch for Rome the battle AI went pretty crazy. In one battle I was the attacker. The AI didn't seem to know that and decided to rush my troops. All their units began to run, even though the distance was hundreds of meters. Their general, as he was riding a horse, ofcourse reached and attacked my troops first (my spearmen unit, naturally). No prizes for guessing what happened next. After that the enemy army ran away. Patches which break more stuff than they fix are just so great (one of Far Cry's patches and Crysis 1.1 pretty much sucked too.)

Maybe he meant the marine AI driving Ghosts and just worded it on an not ungood worsely way.

Sheva from RE5. Shes not brainless, because she does do a lot. But she is incredibly fucking stupid. The people who programmed her intelligence designed her to

1. Die a lot
2. Waste all your items without care of preservation
3. Not do the fucking melee attacks during boss battles

One of the worst AI i have seen was in hitman: codename 47. This one time A guard saw me and started yelling something. He saw that I had killed five of his colleagues and started to point his gun at me. soon I was surrounded by guards all shouting and pointing their guns at me, but nobody fires a single round. I browsed through my weapons, realised I didn´t have that much ammo and chose a knife. I was able to kill four of the ten guard before they started shooting. If I hadn´t killed those guards, I bet they would´ve been fired pretty soon.

L4D has AI that works, but is not up to snuff with the heavy reliance on team work that the game forces upon you. It would be fine if the game did not revolve around teamwork and they just existed as support fire...

But that's not the case.

Now, the AI isn't the worst, fall from it. However, it's probably the worst ever made for something it was designed for.
