Also, when I was a kid, my front door swung into my Gameboy. Pokémon Blue version, wiped in an instant. My level 98 Shiny Dragonite, level 100 Mewtwo, level 100 Blastoise, level 95 Articuno, Zapdos and a level 92 or 93 Moltres were some of the casualties.
Umm, there were no shiny Dragonites in Pokémon Blue... the feature was introduced in Gen 2 on the Gameboy Colour.

OT: For me it was (oddly) not pokémon (I enjoy playing them again, so that has never been a biggy) But; oblivion.
Literally every possible quest done. And suddenly gone.

Damn you XBox hard drive...
My bad, it was Silver. My Blue wasn't damaged, it was lost. To this day I think my friend stole it.

200 hours of Final Fantasy XII gameplay, gone... *sniff*

I'll never let anyone borrow my PS2 again.

When I was a kid, I was a massive Breath of Fire III grandmaster. I had this totally kickass save file with all Dragon Genes and the best equipment for every character. I think I even had most of the abilities. I was merrily playing a quick round of BoF III before school, and I was just saving my game when my step-dad came into the room and hit the power button on my PSX. "We're going. NOW!"

I had like over 160 hours on that file.

Also, I still have not completed Final Fantasy VI 'cos I lost all of my World of Ruin saves when my cheap, third party memory card decided to stop working. I still hate third party hardware.

My Pokemon Crystal, I was getting close to catching all the legendary dog pokemon when it just crapped out on me, no save file. I was super pissed, and I decided to just re-do everything and start from scratch, much to my surprise I can't save at all on that game anymore. I don't know why, so even though I really want to play it, I can't save the game or all my progress will be lost.

I wanted to cry when I found that out, all my hard work, gone.

Over a hundred hours of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 save files were corrupted when I went to import them to my new xbox. Transferred them over to a mass storage drive, traded in old xbox, got new slimbox and when I went to import they could not be found.

Also lost non-replaceable(as far as I know) halo2 DLC maps, and dozens of saved files from the halo3/ODST theaters.

Kingdom Hearts 2 around 96% done, memory card gets corrupted. Part of my soul dies that day.

All I needed was to complete the gem collections!!!

I'm 9 years old. I'm playing the SHIT out of Banjo-Kazooie like it was rented and goes back tomorrow. I FINALLY get enough puzzle pieces to get to the Click-Clock Woods. A huge achieve for me thus far.

Like most of us at a young age, I am ushered outside on the account of "It's a lovely day, you shouldn't be wasting it on video games." Being a single child, my mother was loving but a little bit lenient when it came to the rules. I could have protested and stayed inside; the fact that I didn't was a dire mistake.

Unknown to me, my grandmother and aunt (4 years older than I, so 13,) came over whilst I was out begrudgingly having fun. While the grownups talked, my aunt decided to boot up whatever game was in my N64 at that time. Not knowing the exact button layout for this octopod-like controller, she begins to press every buttons. All buttons. At the save file select screen.

Not knowing that the Z trigger starts the deletion process and A then confirms it, she erased my save file. The hard work of a 9 year old, down the drain with a simple, accidental and fatal button combination.

I did not speak with her for 2 years.
Harsh but she was also a *****.

tl;dr Banjo-Kazooie save file about 15 hours into the game by my stupid ***** of an aunt.

I have 2. When I was like 10, I had 148 pokemon in Blue version. I come back after FINALLY getting a Chancy and my save file is named AAAAAAAAAAAAAA. I'm surprised my little brother is still alive. Just recently though my PS3 died and I lost all of my data. But the worst loss from that incident was the 100+ hours I'd sunk into Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3. I'd gotten every single character and most of the music and stages (the game was actually kind of shit, but me and my buddy love playing versus duels). Do you know how many times I had to summon Shenron? Do you?

Ugh. My PS1 memory cards used to become corrupted en masse for some reason. 15 blocks of data... gone in an instant, and I didn't know until it was too late!

When brother bought KotOR, he let me start a playthrough when he was half finished with the game. Due to it being his first computer game, him not understanding that you should manually save rather than relying on autosave, and Bioware having all the saves in a single list as opposed to having different characters' saves divided up like in their newer games, all his progress was lost. He then kept me from playing till he had beaten the whole game. Before I started playing, I figured out what was what and started saving in new slots so it would never happen again.

Then he deleted my save halfway through to be fair.

Pokemon Crystal was the first game that I played religiously, and I had just gotten Raikou the terrible little ponce. After getting nearly every pokemon in the game save three more, Just THREE MORE, I fell asleep with the Gameboy still on. I awoke to see a garble message in gibberish. Terrified, I turned off the Gameboy and turned it back on in the hopes that it was fine, it loaded up well until it told me one thing: The current save file was corrupt and was deleted.

Such a terribly cold message to watch over my first game to ever reach more than one hundred hours of involvement, don't you think? I honestly cried at the loss.

I lost my Mass Effect 1 through to 2 saves. Two of them. And I really can't be bothered to go through ME1 again, as it will be really annoying to play it again, twice. But I really want Mass Effect 3. I hate reformatting, especially when I'm dumb enough to forget to back-up.

spider man 2 I was on a hard level and I pulled the controller causing the ps2 to fall over and switch off losing data. and having to start a bit back from that level .
switched Xbox 360 from the old arcade to a shiny new 250g one no way to bring my save files over and I also didn't have live then and I had completed nearly all the games I had but I started over again.

Back on the Gamecube, I had an entire years worth of Animal Crossing. I was doing everything perfectly, trying to get the perfect little town and was damn near close to accomplishing it.
I decided to play Metroid Prime one day, and found out my memory card needed to be formatted. So like an idiot I said ok, I didn't realize a format would wipe the card clean. I lost everything, including alot of other games I had worked really hard on. But the Animal Crossing deletion seemed to the more painful loss.
I've never been able to play Animal Crossing again, even the newer versions. For some reason that moment ruined the series forever.
