Most devastating loss of a save file

I'd have to go with the time I accidentally overwrote one of my saves on Fallout 3. A character that I had worked very hard on, had finished almost everything in the game, and was very excited to see come to fruition at the end. Then, while experimenting with one of my side games, accidentally saved overtop the master character.

Some people have done similar with their Pokemon games and regretted it. Once I beat the Elite Four twice, I always start a new game, deleting all my Pokemon in the process. Makes my friend squirm every time he sees me do it, but I just start anew. More fun than clinging to a bunch of high-level Pokemon IMO.

When my ps3 hardrive failed, I didn't really care until I realized I had just lost my Fallout 3 character with over 300 hours on it. I was in a rotten mood for the rest of the week..

Back in the old NES days, we didn't have memory cards. We had a 25-30 digit codes you had to write down. Don't mistake a l for a 1 ,a O for a 0, or a B for a 8.

*looks at memory card* T_T
Hehe... I was waiting for someone else to bring it up. Now I don't feel quite so old.
Really, I'm surprised I was the first to mention those b.s. codes. All pixelated, fuzzy looking, and a mile long. It saddens me to hear people ***** about load times nowadays.

I've had two massively devastating save file losses. The first and worst was when my little brother saved over my Pokemon Crystal. Over 200 hours gone. I was extremely pissed. The second was a massive minecraft castle that took almost 50 hours to build. I lost when I broke minecraft trying to mod it for the first time and ended up having to reinstall it.

In my case it was my first generation PS3 that botched all my savefiles.
I played DA:O and suddenly the console just went black, after I restarted it it refused to do run anything and I couldn't get my game out!
I ended up opening up the console because I valued the game more then the console.
I lost all my PS 1-3 savefiles but the good thing is that I still have my old PS2 console but let's say that losing Wild Arms 1 and 3, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Resonance of Fate, Oblivion and countless hours of gameplay and start again from scratch wasn't that fun

I would probably have to say my FFVIII save game, I loved this game, one of my favorite FF games of all time, I'm about 3/4 of the way done on the 4th disc with close to 300 hours into it (I was about 12 so I took my time with games), boot up the PS1 just to find out that the memory card was empty.... I thought no big deal I'll do it all over again, get to the part where you are running across the beach from the giant spider mech near the end of the first mission... and the game freezes.. *looks at disc* there is literally a chunk missing from the disc.... have not played it since then and I have it for PC now...

:p Well I mentioned them earlier in the thread, but I'm just glad I'm not the only one who can remember those days.

I lost my completed game of Pokemon Ruby to my younger cousin when I let him play it :(

That's the worst I've had though

I had Lord of the Rings, Return of the King on my GBA when I was a nipper, and my brother deleted my level 45 Gimli that I spent hundreds of little me hours on who had all red and blue equipment and maxed in every ability and shit.

I was so annoyed. Then I remembered that I never played the game any more anyway.

I've finally perfected Wario world 1, on the gameboy colour. Good times :D. Every item, and tonnes of gold. I had the Castle (don't know if that was the maximum) Spend a solid 100 hours perfecting it... And it crashed. Gone.
I've never been able to redo it.

Little Big Planet, though not exactly 'loss of a save file'. I did lose a LOT of progress because I forgot to pick up one item in the very beginning of the game. I needed it near the end, but I did not have it. It was totally possible to progress through the game without said item for a very long time, but you couldn't go back to pick up the item once you needed it. You had to already have it on you.
I didn't know this when I was eight years old. I cried a little, knowing that I had to redo a huge part of the game.
Correction, I am talking about 'Little Big Adventure 2'.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread I knew I had you all beat - I have the most devestating loss of a Save Game ever:

I was approaching the final dungeon via airship in Final Fantasy IX, and in a fit of anger, having died by some white dragon (Nova Dragon?) for the 5th time, yanked the controller away from the screen, accidently pulling my Playstation perched precariously on the edge of the stand to the floor, it landed hard, Final Fantasy disappeared replaced by a blue screen mocking 'Aux Input', and when the smoke settled, my off brand 256 slot memory card had neatly cracked in half, never to be recovered. To this day I still have no idea how that game ended. :,-(

was forced to reformat my hard drive and lost all my minecraft saves. That's two mountains full of interconnected rooms, several kilometers of tunnels, a sunk in house beneath the sand, two underwater hideaways, a large log cabin and a floating 1/4 replica of the great Pyramid of Cheops at Giza. All gone. I was somewhat depressed...

Also lost non-replaceable(as far as I know) halo2 DLC maps, and dozens of saved files from the halo3/ODST theaters.
Ha. I have the DLC maps on a disc, cause I bought them at a store. Lucky me.

My sister once accidentally deleted my Lego Star Wars II save file. It was at 98%. She never again go to look at my xbox.
