I'll join the 'Amnesia' crowd. Yes I fully understand it is a perfect vehicle for introducing the game world and mechanics in-character, but unless done very well (and it seldom is, 'Planescape Torment' is a rare example) it is clichéd to death.
*Insert bad guy here* takes away all your powers, you've got to get them back and then fight said bad guy.

The ones where your leader betrays you, and the amnesia ones that totally make sense (Better amnesia games are to make you think "WHAT THE HELL?!") HEavy Rain seemed more like a movie than a game, and all the endings were the same, like Yahtzee pointed out. Halo 2's plot pissed me off, everyone was too goddamn derpy to just figure out "LET'S NUKE THE SHIT OUT OF THEM!!!!!" Also, generic terrorist organizations (Modern Warfare and Bad Company). Russians hate you for no apparent reason, except for the fact that they're Russian and that they're all assholes (in video-games)

Hero A is Super powerful! then something stupid happens and they lose their powers, they fight through the game to try and get said powers back.

Actually in ME you weren't average. All the background somewhat showed your superior survival instinct, leadership skill of wits that let you get through one of the most bloody missions you were embarked on. You start as the best soldier humanity can field. And in ME1 the world is saved by the fleet, you just expose and fight Saren.Red Right Hand said:

Also, Australian officer guy in Section 8 was a pleasant surprise, even though Australia is a Duchy of the United States Empire in this particular universe. (By the way, Section 8 is actually pretty good if any of you haven't played it. )
