I just did some random browsing on the Marvel site, not particularly looking for the most powerful or anything. But i just happened to come across this guy!
http://marvel.com/universe/In-Betweener
Never heard of him before but he seems pretty damn powerful
On the other hand i just read Silver Surfer's page, not sure which would be more powerful. It's just that Silver Surfers page goes into a lot more detail.
I still think the surfer would handle supes. Like a bike. He's probably as strong if not stronger. His power cosmic gives him a whole host of abilities supes couldn't even dream of and with his board he's even faster. I'd say just as durable. So ina strait fight. I'd be backing the surfer.
Only problem is Surfer derives his powers from his board. It's the conduit, remember. And Superman never operates at maximum strength, but even when he isn't, he can fly at Mach 7 in an optimal pressure, and I have no idea how fast he is in a vacuum.
It'd be a brilliant fight, nonetheless. Surfer could even win, if they were fighting in a vacuum, because even Superman needs air. Superman-Prime would annihilate him, however. He's always on ten, and he had a Yellow power ring at one point.
Assuming we don't count that cheater Superman I would have to go with Green Lantern. That assumes he can call upon the Lantern Corp if necessary. If not then Doctor Strange.
Completely forgot about Darwin...he's not used nearly often enough, but then isn't he in X-Factor now? Not a comic I read currently.... When I learned of him, I thought he was quite a compelling character.
I'm gonna be honest with you: Other than a rudimentary knowledge of how his powers work, I don't know a thing about Darwin. I'm not a huge X-man fan, but ever since I did a bit of research on him I've known he's definitely the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe, except maybe The Hulk. You cannot read Planet Hulk and World War Hulk and think the Hulk is anything but godlike.
He's never without it though. He can summon it no matter how far seperated they are. And the boards speed isn't really meassurable. He can practically warp between galaxies in search of planets.
I don't know anything about Superman-Prime. What's the difference?
That's fair enough. Not even Darkseid can warp wherever he wants without a Mother Box.
Superman-Prime is Superman (formerly Superboy) from Earth-Prime, which in the comics is Earth in our universe, one without superheroes. He was insane after Earth-Prime and dozens of other Earths were merged into the Earth-1 universe, in the process extinguishing his Earth's existence. He has the same power level as Superman from Earth-1, except Superman purposely puts in mental blocks to prevent his powers from going out of control; he likens it to being a man in a cardboard world.
As such, Superman-Prime is the most powerful Superman in existence. He beat Ion within an inch of his life, and fended off both Earth-1 and Earth-2 Supermen. And as I said, he once had a Yellow power ring, which would tune his ability to instill great fear into a weapon along with everything else.
If he has enough time to prepare for a situation, then Batman. Otherwise probably Dr. Manhattan... or Deadpool if he breaks the fourthwall and threatens whoever comes up with the scenario to make him automatically win.
Dr. Manhattan probably isn't a bad choice. Can I go away from the comic route and say Yuki Nagato instead? Purple haired Japanese schoolgirl of reality rewriting doom. And quite huggable to boot (unlike Dr. Manhattan)
This threads brings up my two pet peeves, "Superman is boring" and "Superman is invincible". I am neither a Superman hater or lover, but I have read a shit load of comics.
For the first one, Superman is only boring when a bad writer gets a hold of him, likewise when done properly he has awesome compelling stories (All Star Superman, Birthright, Red Son, Secret Identity, Kingdom Come). A large part of Superman's story can be about his struggle with doing too much or too little for society, one story proposes people stop wearing seatbelts, because they believe he will save them if they have an accident.
As well as his struggle to do his very best for humanity, as one person said "Superman can't save everyone, but he tries". This is a man who can't sleep because he hears a plane crashing in Japan. He feels alienated from society because of his powers, a crushing responsibility to his job and wants nothing but a normal life.
Another point is that even if Superman is rarely in danger himself, the peril comes from the threats to his friends, family and innocent civillians. Sure Superman won't die, but if Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen or anyone else dies due to a mistake of his, he will never forgive himself for the rest of his pretty much immortal life. This is a fate worse than death for Superman who is willing to die for the good of others (and has done so).
On to the second point, Superman has a lot of weakness, magic, red sun and kryptonite. Sure he is a god, but a green rock can make him have his ass kicked by a 10 year old. There are lots of magic users both good and evil in the DC universe and red sun light is frequently simulated by villains too (though this just makes him normal). Also he can be beaten by stronger opponents, when he died it was from physical means by Doomsday. Again this wouldn't mean much but there are hordes of people in the DC universe who are as powerful or more powerful than Superman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, the Flash and Wonderwoman just from his own team. No one complains about them.
Don't get me started on who in Marvel could beat or at least match him for strength.
Most powerful probably Dr Manhattan or Sentry/Void (his powers become very similar to Manhattan's toward the end). That said Dr Strange or The Doctor (from the authority, not the timelord) with their multi-dimensional powers they're are pretty insane (not to mention Scarlet Witch's character derailment and reality warping).
Dexiro said:
I barely know anything about comics or superheroes, but i've heard of Cable being (one of?) the most powerful.
His wiki said he used his telekinesis to lift an entire city while fighting the Silver Surfer, that seems pretty powerful to me
Powerful yes, but Silver Surfer beat him in the end. But yeah Cable wasn't just lifting the city, he was repairing the damage he and Surfer made to cities and the planet (though Surfer may have been doing it too I can't remember), communicating with every mind on earth, as well as doing other less frequently mentioned feats like suppressing all the viral load of HIV suffers in Africa.
This god like power was killing him and he had a batman gambit to lose on purpose after forcing the planet to unite against him for the greater good. It kind of worked...
Well, Superman's boringness and invincibility come from Spiderman's success.
Way back in the 80s when comics were at the golden age, the two big competitors were Superman and Spiderman. When they first started, superman regularly outsold Spiderman, but as time passed the writers of Superman just had him do the same thing all the time and the writers of Spidey had him come across challenges and new bad guys. Spiderman began to outsell the Man of Steel so instead of making his story more compelling they just gave him more powers. This trend has continued forever and DC wonders why their comics suck compared to Marvel's. *shrug*
I would say Prometheus as he dealt with him (As with as the entire Justice League) once solo. Provided there is prep time.
He's a symbol, plain and simple. A lone paragon in a world constantly changing to make him outmoded. In Kingdom Come, he and a bunch of his allies imprisoned several hundred so-called "superheroes" because their sense of morality had skewed and they did anything to get the job done.
Superman was a Mary Sue. Nowadays, he's been shown to have a crisis of faith. He's a decent character when writers make the effort, which is rare.
