Not true, Batman can beat him. He keeps a contingency plan to defeat any hero in JLU in case they defect. Not to mention that Superman has died and Batman has yet to be killed.
But it's about the most powerful, Batman is badass but he isn't the most powerful hero.

Superman as he is bland and unimaginative and therefore he is all powerful and the most powerful one.

Noone else could beat him, unless there is an un heard of cryptonite man, which really wouldn't surprise me coming from his universe.

Wait a second, didn't they already kill him a few times in the past? Of course it's never permanent, but what death is permanent in the DC multiverse...
The only one I remember was Final Crisis, which just sent him back in time, and gave him amnesia.

If Batman can beat the supposed most powerful, then wouldn't that make him the most powerful?

No.
He's good, we know this. He's the only man who could kill supes but when it comes down to it Supes is the strongest of the bunch.

Why does everyone forget that Superman is vulnerable to magic? I mean, if you're gonna bash him for being "boring and uncreative" entirely (rather than the quality of his character depending on the quality of the writer), at least get both of his weaknesses out of the way.

Meanwhile...

EDIT: Then again, I actually remember an extensive list somewhere that argued for Thor and Silver Surfer being technically more powerful than him, too.

A quick google search gave me <url=http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/film/article1982939.ece>that, but I have no idea if and how it actually happened as I'm not really up to date with DC's Batman. Only thing I can say is I hope they keep away from Dick as successor. Dick Grayson is Nightwing, why should he go back to become Batman?

Well I always think of Dr. Manhattan [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Manhattan#Doctor_Manhattan] when I hear those words.
I agree he was powerful but the writers would somehow find a way superman would win.

If I'm right Silver Surfer. Since his powers are based on a universal level, Superman Is just a powerful humanoid by Earth standards.

True, but every time he almost gets killed by magic, someone else shows up to save him / fight the magic bad guy. Also, no matter how weak Superman gets, just throw him into the sun.

I wanted to say Dr. Manhattan, or possibly the various gods that show up from time to time, but anyone that has universe-altering powers isn't really *powerful* so much as they have power over the ways of the universe.

I'd have to go with...Odin. Superman MAY be super over powered, but Odin is a God. Plus he knows all(in truth, he has a ton of powers and you'd need a small library to catalog them all)and he'd know instantly how to beat superdouche, and get it and win.

Well...Dr Manhattan. Mainly because any 'weaknesses' he had were psychological in nature, as I think he was designed to be otherwise perfect, a living god basically.

Speaking of which...I've rarely come across god like characters in comics that -didn't- have some fatal weakness in order to further the drama and plot, and Manhattan is really one of the few exceptions.

Anyway, power isn't really all that interesting a concept to talk about when dealing with fiction. Unless the character in question is interesting, why should I care that he or she can kick suns around like footballs and floss their teeth with galaxies?

Superman?

batman could kill superman if he needed too he is ready for him when the time comes.

Would love to see batman shove his fist down blandmans throat wearing the kryptonite ring

But as this is most powerful it must be Dr. Manhattan

Ok... Superman IS overpowered, no doubt. But along with Kryptonite, he has a weakness to magic. So just use any of the following: The Spectre, Dr. Fate, Dr. Strange, Brother Voodoo, maybe Zatanna. Atlas proved than any guy with magic-based strength can beat Supes, so in theory, the Juggernaut can beat Superman as well.

...Wow, serious nerd moment. And it's only going to continue...

Other contenders:
Thor. He's the God of Thunder.
Silver Surfer. That overpowered Power Cosmic. The only (occasional) good guy to ever use it.
The Hulk. Doubt that? Read World War Hulk. You'll see what I mean.
Dr. Manhatten. Yeah... he probably wins this discussion.
Sodam Yat. Ion has some serious power. I haven't read GL recently, but last I checked he was in the core of a freakin' SUN.
The Sentry. Whiny guy, didn't like him, but he was created to be Marvel's equivilent to Superman, IMO.

There are a bunch more, but I can't think of any.

Edit: Also, Batman. Physically strong? No. But he seems to be able to beat ANY other hero. Which makes me wonder why his villians give him so much trouble.
Dr. Strange. He's the most powerful sorcerer in the Marvel Universe... and there are some pretty powerful sorcerers there.

If anyone said anything other than
Dr. Strange
OR

The Flash
Then you're wrong. The Flash is so hax it's not even funny. He can touch you and make you explode! I'd even put him above silver age Superman, and that's saying something.

Today I was sat in physics and instead of listening to the teacher ramble on about simple harmonic motion I found myself trying to think who the most powerful superheroes (and villians) are. For DC I reackon it could be Sodam Yat, the Green Lantern Daxamite who was up until recently bonded with Ion. For Marvel I guess it could either be The Sentry or The Hulk. Anyway my question is who do you think it is and why?
For Marvel I guess it has to be one of those two, as Sentry is so powerful he's a plot device, and Hulk just gets stronger the madder he gets, and he's an angry bastard.

CaptainCrunch said:
When every plan for writing him out of some impossible trap that will certainly kill him is "he gets more powerful", it's hard to disagree with you. How can a messiah allegory ever be beaten?
Y'know it's funny because Supergirl is also supposed to be more powerful than him as well, she just has less control. So for those of you who are going on raw power, unless it's silver age soupes SG takes it. And disregarding that, Hal Jordan with Spectre Force would put him in the ground faster than Doomsday did.

Yeah, now that you remind me, the heroes did things that were either a complete stretch of your imagination (Superman being able to time travel) to downright silly (Read: Batman The Black Casebook TPB, you'll see what I mean) in the Silver Age.

The Spectre.

He is basically gods hitman in the DCU and he is proportionally powerful.
