First time playing through No Mercy on L4D. I'm already a little spooked by hospitals, and the fact that I got surprise-punched by a tank on the first staircase, well... after my heart rate left the triple digits and I righted by chair, I just put the controller down and didn't touch the game for awhile.

Ravenholm. That scared me so much, even if it was pretty short.
Ravenholm was short? I found it pretty long.
At first, i suppose it could be both long and scary, but I've played through it so long, nothing surprises me any more. I know where all the zombies will come from, when they will appear, etc.. It makes it go a lot quicker too.

Without a doubt the Shalebridge Cradle from Thief 3 - Deadly Shadows. I'd recommend that anyone who likes a good game and a good scare plays it. It is terrifying and one of the best designed and most immersive levels in gaming.

Silent hill 1 and RE 1 were the only two games that scared the shit out of me, but I was also quite young at the time. None of the new 'scary' games feel scary at all, still fun and enjoyable but not actually scary.

Pussies, every last lot of you. FEAR was not scary, Silent Hill was not scary, and certainly not Resident Evil.

You guys would probably shit yourselves playing the Penumbra series.

Aliens vs. Predator 2 Marine Campaign. It was already creepy enough but that for almost the whole first level you don't fight shit but see crap exploding, skinned bodies, people exploding into gore freaked me the fuck out. Then you reactivate the security system and I about shat myself.

Silent Hill is more of a mind trip than scary. Resident Evil has never been scary, much agreed. FEAR, well I just flat out hate this game with a passion, and the lack of 'FEAR' was not just it.

I would have to say the scariest game I have ever played is Doom 3, but I have never played any other scary games so it kinda wins by default.
SAME

i was playing Doom 3 at my uncles

it was only at the first part where the sciencetist gets (ZOMBIFIED) and as soon as he started to make those uuhhhh huuuuu ahhhh noises i was freaking out

then more came at this point i was almost crying (i was 9)

then they started to atack !!

i didn't know what to do so i ran to the tv and turned EVERYTHING off

first the sound then tv after that i jujst went to the sofa to try and forget as much as possible

seriously that zombie scared the heck out of me it was mainly because of his zombie noises uhuuuhhhh huuuu thats way more scarier then the modern day Shrieking of todays so called scares

Silent hill 2, 3, 4, system shock 2, the suffering & fatal frame 2 all come close but nothing is more scarier than the original silent hill.

Dead Space on Impossible difficulty was scary when you kept running out of ammo and had to slap them with your gun.

Silent Hill wasn't much of a mind fuck really, if you want a good ol' fashioned mind rape go and play Eternal Darkness, much of the inspiration from that game comes from H.P. Love Craft's stories.

Clive Barker's Undying, the Thief games and Call of Cthulhu were the scariest ones for me. And Clive Barker's Jericho had it's moments too.

are we talkin' genuine fear or just crappin your pants now an then when something appears and goes "boo!" very loudly?

Because Project Zero scared me in both ways. It's called Fatal Frame state-side btw.

Yeah.

And silent hill was a bit spooky.

Half-Life 2, specifically the whole chapter of Ravenholm. Very immersive and scary, especially when I was down to my gravity gun, crowbar and a grenade and thinking "Where do these zombies keep coming from?".
