Beyond that kindly Irish accented advice is an indication of quite how ridiculously powerful the Wrench is. As when the enemies are stunned, the wrench does 400% damage and that is ON TOP OF base damage-enhancement + unaware bonuses.

So a single Wrench hit can deal ALMOST FOUR THOUSAND HP OF DAMAGE!!! That will insta-kill ANYTHING in the game except a big-daddy (that only take 25% from any wrench attack) even then that means some can be killed with only 3 stun-hit combos.

When I play Bioshock I always have the wrench selected for general encounters, if I came across a splicer I'd run right over and bop them in the head before they noticed me. BAM! Insta kill. I even got good hitting spider splicers on the ceiling jumping up and swinging at just the right moment, my god it's so god damn satisfying cracking splicer's skulls and sending them flying. Nothing was safe. Also, with thuggish splicers I really got good at dodging their attack, dipping in and out of striking range and dodging to the left against large lunges (that are quite telegraphed) even leadhead splicers can be exploited at close range circle strafing. Any time a spider splicer tries to backflip away from me I whack their cranium with the wrench on the

See, in Bioshock the only tonics that increase your weapon damage are for the wrench. It becomes the most powerful weapon in the game when used correctly.

Now. Would you kindly go play Bioshock again and give the Wrench another chance.
Damn, I never knew the pontential the wrench had. If I even play Bioshock again, I might take those tips.

my worst weapon is the BB gun in fallout 3. sure, it's a BB gun, but you get 50 rounds for it and that's it. sure, if you could upgrade it to make it more usefull, i could roll with it but giving me a shit gun to use the first 10 minutes, only to sell for less than 10 currency?
no thanks.
Yeah I was kinda dissapointed that the bb gun was total crap and that there wasn't a an awesome powerful version like the LE red ryder bb gun from the original fallout. I was happy when they put in a similar bb gun in new vegas.

OT: long fuse dynamite in fallout new vegas. So, it's exactly the same as regular dynamite but it takes longer to explode? So basically it will miss way more. Why?

What do you mean "If I even"?
I said, WOULD YOU KINDLY play bioshock again!

:D

Yeah, it's such a shame when so many games so often fail to properly emphasise the importance of such features, not they could just explode all the stats on you but that could put many people off so they'd have to be somewhat hidden but that could again be easily missed.

I think they key is in the subtly of the weapons sounds/effects. So if it does 4x damage then there needs to be a different sound or a visual effect to indicate you're dealing 4x damage. That's bioshock's problem, if it was a hardcore RPG it would have on-screen stats indicating damage done, while if it was more arcade it would just have a different animation. The challenge is you have to have a continuous animation of how you deal more and more damage.

I'm studying a games development course and I'm realising more and more the importance of these design elements.

You can't just explain things to people logically, you have to also add an emphasis in the subtle way things respond. So if the shotgun gets a damage upgrade it has to SOUND different.

I want to play Bioshock but so many games coming out D:
I guess you got a point there about the whole not realizing how much damage you are pontentially dealing. I never thought the wrench did much damafe cause of the fact it was wrench, psychological thinking it just a tool I probably have in my garage.

This thing in the Halo games:

plasmagun.jpg
You fool! Plasma guns (and pistols) are awesome. You don't use them for killing things, you use them to strip energy shields so you (or a team mate) can one-shot the enemy with a bullet.

OK, really useless wepons:

- The concussion rifle in Reach. Deadly in the hands of enemies, about as much use as a hair dryer when you're using it. About the only valid use is using it to push enemies off ledges or into the water.

- The magnum in Halo 2 and 3.

- The Bubble gun in Earthworm Jim 2.

- Any gun except the shotgun in Half Life 2 (a dozen different assault rifles and SMGs, and they all just go "braaaap" and tickle the enemies)...

- The freeze gun in any game that features it (e.g. Duke 3D). It's NEVER worth the time and effort to use.

- 99% of the stat increase/debuff attacks in any Pokemon game. A turn spent casting Reflect is a turn that you didn't Earthquake/Fire Blast/Thunder Fang your enemy's ass. The only exception is really useful Grass-type stuff like poison/Leech Seed/Giga Drain.

- THE BLOODY CRAPPY HAMMERBURST IN GEARS 3

Actually, if you find all the treasure maps before you get it and upgrade it properly, it becomes close to the most powerful weapons.

OT: I'd have to say in almost any game, your fists once you get a weapon

Saint's Row 2: Pepper Spray.

Funny for pissing off civilians, useless at any other time. It just distracts them for a moment, but in Saint's Row if you're in combat, you are under fire from everywhere so distracting enemies is kind of useless.

Even the stungun is more useful, at least that ragdolls enemies in amusing ways.

The splash attack from the pokemon series.

END OF TOPIC.
There's a worse one now. Say hello to Heal Pulse [http://serebii.net/attackdex-bw/healpulse.shtml].

Instead of merely doing no damage, it heals them for 50% HP, and can't target yourself or allies.

Well I gave it a chance because when I ran up colliding it with the cranium of a back-flipping splicer... it just seemed like it caused more damage than a 9mm in the gut. It just seemed a hard enough impact to completely shatter their skull and I almost always used the weapon in a stealthy way so I usually got the unaware damage bonus, the animation for insta-killing unaware opponents was really high.

Though maybe if the weapon functioned the same but looked deadlier. Like if it was a sledge hammer or a fire axe. I think way more people used the Drill in Bioshock 2 because it look powerful.

The fuse is longer so that you can set small traps and shit. that's atleast what i have done.
but yeah, it really is kind of useless, you'd think they'd put in a dynamite-mine or something if they want you to set traps, or atleast given you a tutorial...

i have used it like once, i guess, for just that purpose, but other than that time i have just sold 'em for a small 'mount of cashing.

OT: Thinking about it, the most useless thing I can think of is the Sun on a Stick in TF2, why the hell would a Scout want to use a weapon that's only effective against burning enemies when there are so many better weapons out there to use for melee?

I see your Sun on a Stick and raise you this! At least the Sun won't KILL YOU.

I see both your crappy weapons and raise you:

The absolutely shittiest weapon in the game. Inferior to the rifle in every possible manner, and you can only get any kills with it either at little over melee range or if your opponent messes up and runs into your projectile. The projectile is simply too slow and visible for TF2, so it can be avoided AFTER being fired.

No reason to ever use this weapon. It's a useless pile of shit for people who are too bad to land a shot with the rifle, and instead substitute having to aim with luck and spam. Luck is the only way to get a kill with this pile of junk anywhere but at very close range.

And it uses the slot of one of the best weapons in the game.

It depends a lot on the way you use them.

The sub-gun + overwatch have strong upward kick. They projectiles do the same damage whether hitting the shin or the head. The trick to using such weapons is to aim low, at their knees and let out a long 10-15 round burst that walks up the body. Should be a 13-hit kill with MP7 and a 7 hit with Overwatch.

If you aim high the burst will carry your aim over the top and you'll have to reset and then you've lost the stun-lock they could have dodged left or right while shooting. That just makes it too hard to use.

Though, I'll admit that's really shoddy compared to the shotgun where one blast can kill a combine in an instant but just a square hit in the torso. The machine guns' range advantage can't be exploited due to the high recoil, I end up using shotgun for close range an pistols for anything beyond that.

Though technically not a weapon, SR1 Normandy in Mass Effect 2? Collectors made short work of it..
I don't think that counts. You admitted it wasn't a weapon and the Normandy was very useful! It took you places! And prevented you from dying out in the cold vacuum of space (up until its destruction anyway)!

Two people mentioned Pokemon's Splash already, so I put forth Growl and String Shot. They never saved my pokemon. They just made battles feel longer.
Aye, that I did. But the SR1 Normandy died about 5 minutes into the game, wasn't talking about the SR2.
Though speaking of Mass Effect, I'd say that the Nuke Launcher...thing (you can tell I know my ME stuff....) is pretty useless. Though that could just be me. I can only get it to explode in my face (giggidy) and give Shepard a quick dose of radiation. :p

... I have been repeatedly dominated by snipers using that weapon.

even when I am playing as Scout.

Yet I suck when using the weapon myself.

Silenced ACR without stopping power, from MW2
I raise you, the silenced M240.

M240 is WORTHLESS. Unlocked AFTER the MG4 yet with way WAY worse accuracy and the same damage, and on top of that... the silencer doesn't even work!!

So you have a massive huge and unwieldy weapon that is incredibly weak and still visible on radar.

At least with suppressed ACR you have at moderately close range a 4 hit kill, a silenced Machine gun lowers the damage rate at ALL ranges, it is a 5 hit kill even point blank. You could be quite stealthy with a silenced ACR, especially if without stopping power you had cold-blooded.

PS: MG4 + grip > ACR (for defence)

There's nothing to it. Just aim at areas where people are moving, pull back, and let it rip. Hope you get lucky and someone runs into it. That's all the skill involved in it.

If you keep getting dominated by it either someone is REALLY lucky, or you're doing something terribly wrong, like moving linearly and very predictably.
