Moving the New 360 Can Damage Disks

How is this news? The old 360 did it. I remember shifting my 360 to the right a bit when I first got it around the original release date and I heard a grinding noise and Condemned popped out unplayable with big circular scratches all over the bottom. It almost happened again with another disc, but I was able to pop it out before horrible death happened.

Plus isn't this common sense? My ps3 did the same and actually reacted more sensitive than the 360, and one time my cat jumped on the Wii and it ate the disc (The Wii, not the cat) as well. I also recall that its a bad idea to move a PC around with a disc in it. This really isn't news at all.

The question is: is someone stupid enough to tilt the console while the disc is running also so stupid as to buy GameStop's scratch "warranty"? That would be a case of two stupid moves canceling each other (somehow).

This can hardly be a big issue to fix. Ps3 doesn't have it. Hell, the PS2 could even be switched from horizontal to vertical. As I understand, there's a small piece of plastic that Microsoft removed to cut "production costs." Some things are better left alone though, and I'm astonished they haven't fixed it. In other words: "Ah fuck, I can't believe you've done this."

Why couldn't they fix this, then make that a unique selling point.

Idiots all over will buy it then!

I'm not sure why anyone thinks this is a good idea in the first place. I'm amazed people would move their units with a spinning disc.

FAIL, MICROSOFT. FAIL.
I mean, they may have fixed the Red Ring of Death issue, but isn't this worse?
However, I suppose most people don't really move their 360s whilst it's playing a disk.
Moving the old 360 while it's spinning a disk could ruin the disk as well....I really don't wish to go into detail on that and look like a jackass

:C but i love dancing around with my console while i play videogames
Just do what I do, keep it horizontal resting and throw bricks at it. IT WON'T MOVE

Am i the only one who thinks that moving your Console with a disc Spinning shouldn't damage it? I remember this was a Huge problem with Dreamcast. And now to make a blatant poke at the obvious. The name is 360.....Guess we made a complete revolution back to the Dreamcast...:)
Why the fuck are people moving their consoles while playing games?

I don't know if the PS3 has that problem or not cause I don't ever plan to move it. But I could see where it might happen accidentally. Say you have it sitting somewhere and you've got something hooked up to it by USB (you can do that with Xbox, right?) and someone trips over the cord, causing it to either fall or maybe move a little. So thats irritating, but I guess the idea here is to be gentle with your games.

Clearly the Xbox isn't earthquake proof!

However I look at it, I can't help but feel maybe this new one should have fixed this. (despite me also thinking it stupid to move the thing while it's reading)

There are people out there who have fixed this problem with litraly 3 small bits of foam rubber and yet MS seems uninterested, go figure.

And in those same ads what you don't see is someone dropkicking it while it is vertical and reading a disc. What you do see is them on a nice flat STABLE surface like they should be if you are going to have it vertical. Consumer stupidity is not a design flaw.

i would say more people have thier console horizantal becuase that is the smarter way to have it, if you put it vertical then it should be in a place protected by something or up where nobody but another human being can get it(yes that could be hard if you have a cat) but what i am saying is, it is no design flaw that this happens and anyone who puts their console up verticly and accidentaly knocks it over and screws up their disk, then procedes to complain about when it is not microsofts fault. putting your console up verticly and knocking it over or moving it while it is on and a dick is in there is putting the disk on death row.... this happens for ALL consoles if they are put up verticly.

EDIT:i have been in that situation, i have acidentaly knocked my xbox over while it was playing CoD: WAW and the dick was screwed up, i didin't complain to mircrosoft becuase i knew it was my own damn fault.
We all agree it shouldn't tip during normal operation. I see an anti-scratch mechanism similar to how I see seatbelts in a car. In normal operation, it's not needed, but the company knows there's a reasonable chance an accident could occur & the feature would be quite handy. Granted, a scratched disc isn't life threatening, but they both help minimize damage in the event of an accident.

Squid, I agree consumer stupidity is not a design flaw. I'm not talking about the extreme drop kick scenario you are, or even the "I'm curious about something so I'll move my console to look" scenario. I'm saying MS should design a product that can withstand normal events of a living room. That includes being around pets & children that might knock things over.

This is something that's not black and white. If either of you still disagree with me, that's fine. I've explained my thoughts on it. You've explained yours. I've said my peace.
I have a 50lb dog and a 1 year old who has figured out how to run. I also have a 360 in my living room where all the action takes place and can honestly say I have never lost a single disc to it becoming hungry. How is such an amazing feat possible? Simple I have a kid and a hyper dog, putting the 360 vertically is not an option. It isn't like having it horizontal has ever effected performance. Putting it vertical is a risk no matter what your household is like. It tipping could just as easily break you entire console not just the disc.

moving from horizontal to vertical will destroy disks on the regular 360, my brother was playing Oblivion on my Xbox and went to show something to a friend so he rotated the screen and moved the Xbox vertical, the Xbox made a horrid sound and there was a ring carved into the disk, it took him a year to replace the game with Fallout 3 and he destroyed that too.

Guessing it's worse than the original if he's reporting it. But still who would move something that's spinning something at fast speeds anyway? Spinning object + change of angle = BAD

in other news, dropping the xbox off a building or setting it on fire will also render the console unusable. bad marks for Microsoft there...

seriously, if anything I'm a ps3 fanboy, and dispense many lolz at the RROD, but come on! show some common sense here! its not a hand held! and ffs! if it has a sticker on it that says "don't juggle the console while disk is reading" and you do it anyway...

I'm sure this effects all other devices that use optical media too.

Why the hell are people saying that microsoft fails for this? Any system will have a problem like this because the disc is spinning, so its free to move, meaning gravity will take over when you move the thing and it will fall out of place, messing all sorts of shit up. Try moving your wii like that, your ps3 like that, your computer like that, it will probably be a bad thing. Being careful with electronics has been a staple rule since electronics came out. Moving something meant to be stationary while on is stupid. Why bother moving the 360 anyways? It wont enhance your experience, so just leave it alone. I could say that chucking the ps3 out of my window will break it, is that a fail on sony's part for not making it steel-framed?

Speaking as an employee of Gamestop, that warranty covers the system eating the disc. Not sure how it's a stupid move to spend $1-3 to protect a $60 investment.

'Nuff said. Ever since the PS2 I've just placed those bad boys down horizontally and somehow avoided moving the console around when I'm playing a game. Guess how many games I've destroyed.
