Multiplayer is Valhalla

In ancient times, the Vikings believed that, when they died in combat, they would go to Valhalla. Valhalla is a sort of heaven that serves as a battlefield to those who have been slain. Every day, the dead, or Einherjar, as they are called, battle with one another to their heart's content. At the end of the day, the survivors meet at a banquet table and feast through the night. Those who are slain are resurrected, and will join the battle anew the next day.

Now, let's talk about first person shooters. In the single player, you may fight a bloody war to save the world from total annihilation. At some point in the story, you may even die. In multiplayer, on the other hand, you end up in a large arena, where you and a bunch of other players fight without reason or rhyme, killing one another yet respawning instantly. Sound familiar?

This notion may sound odd at first, but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. For example, though you may play as entirely different countries, there are no special consequences if one side wins over the other. Even if the Russians stomp all over the Americans, the next day the sides are even again.

And it's not just in standard mode that this is obvious. In Confirmed Kill, you're expected to retrieve a set of dog tags from every enemy you kill. Some Norse also believed that a weapon was sacred, and that if an opponent is disarmed the blade should be retrieved before it touches the ground. Retrieving the weapon of a fallen enemy would only be respectful.

I could go on, but at this point, you either believe me or you don't. So what do you think?

Bonus: Describe the differences and similarities between Zombies mode and Ragnarok.

I can't believe I never thought of this before. I have a huge interest in Norse Mythology, especially in Valhalla. It is kind of scary how close they are. People locked in constant battle and enjoying it. That's pretty awesome, Great comparison skills, man.

This is brilliant, just wanted to say that. It never crossed my mind, will tell my flat mate about this idea, he's sure to be interested.

Fascinating theory! Haven't really developed that thought myself before.

Now, I'm rather rubbish at most competitive multiplayer games, even if I do like them. I'm an involuntary feeder.

If I remember correctly, the goddess Hel of the underworld were collecting nails from the dead to build the ship Nagelfar out of them. I feel that would be the arrangements I get, providing the forces of the Underworld with kills and score. In Norse tradition, it was important to keep your nails trimmed short, to delay the construction of Nagelfar as long as possible. Much like the importance of avoiding feeding.

Perhaps the glorious afterlife of the digital warriors are but a long preparation for the final battle ahead, Ragnarök. The final, glorious round where the practiced and rehearsed digital warriors stand ready to fight for their Gods, as Noobyfar, built with dog tags and honour points, arrives on the horizon and all the horrors of Midgård is unleashed...

Feck it, I'm erecting a rune stone bearing this tale in the park.

Interesting Theory I must say myself.
However I see your theory as an awesome idea for an First Person Shooter/Fighting game.

Think about it and imagine this picture:

"Ragnarök, is a series of future events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures like Odin,Hel,Loki,Thor and many other Gods. The only survivors are two human beings.God and Satan. Having gifted by their old dead Gods, they given to them the ability to create once again new life in this dead world. But.......something terrible happened. The war started again. The dead warriors of Valhalla, Einherjar, get releases from their eternal prison of slaughter to bring death and destruction to the new world. God and Satan now must do something to keep this world still alive, because if they don't, the future of the new world is ruined."

Sorry for my bad English if you don't undestand clearly.
What do you think?

If you mean that multiplayer is where gaming has gone to die, I guess I can see it. Outside of that, ehh, sketchy at best IMHO.

Actually I would like to see gaming be the place where violent conflict between humans goes to die.

but i bet the vikings never expected 12 year olds to be bunny hopping past screaming about campers and calling everyone fagots in vahalla
I suspect teabagging wasn't in their original vision either.

Now I've got this mental image of Thor grumbling about quick-scopers and noob-tubers. Though I'd say multiplayer game modes that don't have respawning (like CoD's Search and Destroy) would be a more apt comparison seeing as how, as the OP pointed out, in Valhalla if you die you're out for the rest of the battle until the next day's battle...or in this case, the next round of the game.

Technically, I think Beowulf is in Christian lore, since Grendel is supposed to be a descendant of Cain. But, still funny.

Unfortunately, about 2/3 of the "warriors" in Valhalla are either n00bs, douchebags or 12-year olds who just learned to curse. Sounds almost like hell, especially if some of them are griefers. Good thing about Valhalla, you can mute the other warriors who annoy you. Unfortunately some people have found a way to cheat in Valhalla and the gods only rarely intervene with their mighty banhammer.

I've always thought of it as little more than online daycare, but I must say that your analogy is considerably more neato.

Personally, I think Robert Kroese's Disenchanted might be a better comparison. After trying valiantly to get into a fantasy version of Valhalla, former King Boric discovers that their Valhalla is more like a prison where the rowdy of the living are kept away from everyone else. And really, I couldn't love Call of Duty more for that.

You need to read the Poetic Edda more closely.

Verily, doeth this 'aim assist' vex me eternally.

...Because we all know Vikings speak in the tongue of "Dinner Theater." I saw it in that documentary, "Thor."

Awesome, I'm not the only person who's thought of multiplayer FPS games like this. The battles that go on are almost in a pretend war that start and stop with the players planning them. Really it is the easiest way to contextualise what is happening.

I think the "respawn instantly" thing ruins it. Games with one life per round (such as Counter-Strike) would be Valhalla... stuff with respawn tickets and high-score objectives under a time limit would just be wargames in Midgard.

I think that Red Vs Blue explored this idea already. I think they captured how retarded it would be pretty well.

Perhaps the more 'mature' servers could be considered, as I'm sure that the screaming pre-pubescent hordes that infest certain genres isn't exactly what I'll call heaven.
