Is it just me that stereotypes metalheads as a subdivision of nerds?
A statistically significant proportion of the people that do physics at my uni are metalheads (maybe 15% or so, much higher than I see anywhere else), a large proportion of the people on this forum seem to be metalheads and when I helped out my friend playing a gig with his metal band, 2 of the band members had a half hour long discussion about starcraft.

I'm planning on doing an essay on the music of Nerd culture (assuming thats the assignment I get, I have a good feeling) so I'll get back to you with what I find. I have a feeling the relation to Metal comes from anti-mainstream ideas and an inflated sence of intelligence (no offence intended).

If it helps, The Fall of Troy, whom I listen to a vast amount at the moment, are a 3-piece screamo/experimental bunch of guys that use unnecessarily complex language sometimes, and I will openly admit (albeit with complete anonymity) that it does sometimes make me feel intelligent. For the record I do understand it.

I can suggest many factors that probably contribute to the correlation. Both are outsider cultures, metal provides a community or a family in ways that I don't see in any other musical genre, but works in a similar way to being a trekkie for example, appealing to a demographic who are generally characterised as being socially awkward, the virtuosity of heavy metal perhaps appeals to the thinky-ness of your stereotypical nerd.

Lol at calling the bands you listen to diverse, come back when you have an idea.

There is so much music in the world today and I'm not talking "LOL EVEN UR SURROUNDANS CAN BE MUSICS!!" there are just so many specific cross-border genres which I probably couldn't even begin to describe...

A Man who says "I'm represented by my music" Is simply saying for my personality (Stupidity at its finest).

On the other hand, you could say appearance is musically swayed but that itself is the image of the band playing the music which you sway to.

Very stupid to dress up as music you like, enjoy being a semi quaver.

Neckbearded jazz lover.
That's, like, not even trying.
(Also, I'm clean-shaven.)
How about, someone who actually like, types, like an american mall-crawling girl who totally like, uses, proper like, punctuation for like, everything, YEAH!

All in jest!

Ooh ooh ooh, pick me.

Music snob? Someone who only listens to Jazz because Classical is too rigid and dull and Popular is souless. Basically if a song doesn't have a complex melody, harsh chordal texture and insane improv solos its not worth it.

Close?

Also - how many 16 year olds have neckbeards?

People tend to be drawn to music because it expresses an emotion they can easily relate to, the more complex and emotional the music, the more intelligent a person is, that's from experience, obviously it doesn't apply to everyone but I haven't seen many cases where it doesn't.

Also being drawn to certain music can act as a release for that emotion like say anger for instance, by giving you a parallel.

It's our accent to talk like that.

Pretty close. Of course, the melody is optional. I prefer to go straight to solos.

I've actually met a couple. Mostly because they "forget" to shave for a couple weeks.

EDIT: I'm going to see Kneebody on Friday. They are the embodiment of that style you spoke of.

Haha I obviously dress deceivingly because people look shocked when I say that my favourite music genre is pop

So no, I don't really judge people based on the music they listen to because I'm in the same boat. DOn't get me wrong, I love me a bit of metal, but pop will always have first place in my heart

I listen to Death Metal and Classical most probably, followed by Progressive Rock and Jazz.

Expressive and open, quite witty, would never in a million years approach a girl you didn't know?
(That's not a stab at you, I'd never do that in a billion years)

I'm a tough one to generalize myself. The only thing that belies my musical tastes is my long straight hair. I listen to Melodic Death Metal / Folk Metal mainly but I wear snappy 3 piece suits generally everywhere I go. Also a nice hat. A man isn't a man without a nice hat.

Generally always have something argyle on as well. Basically, my grandfather is my fashion benchmark.

Of course, I also listen to "good" rap like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Deltron, Aotp, Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique. I also enjoy a lot of classical style techno or inspired music like X-Ray Dog and E.S. Posthumous.

I'm kind of out there.
