I roll with the AC-130, because I feel like I have greater control over the situation. As a rule, I use a set of killstreak rewards with the least amount of randomness built in (i.e. Predator/Stealth Bomber/AC-130) because I'm not about to lose a chance at a high killstreak due to a helicopter or harrier sitting above the battlefield like a mentally-handicapped duck, waiting to be shot down.

The level of detachment that you get from raining high explosives onto people several thousand feet below also doesn't hurt when I'm trying to get in the zone.

Not to mention, the AC-130 absolutely wrecks on maps like Afghan or Wasteland. Or even Terminal, when I have a danger close pro class on. >:3

EDIT
Can't believe I forgot this, but you can shoot down ANYTHING other than a UAV or Stealth Bomber with an AC-130, even an Apache. Also, it is way more terrifying to hear that first shot of the 105mm than the WHUPWHUPWHUP of the chopper coming in.

Chopper Gunner is almost certainly the more effective choice but I never cared for it. There is just something about orbiting the battlefield using the fist of god himself to smite my tormenters that brought a smile to my face.

In my experience, the Apache (chopper guner) has always been better than the AC-130, max kills i've got with the AC-130 is probably around 15, whereas I went from 20-2 to 42-2 using the chopper gunner o_O All you need to do is find the enemies spawn and unload, get soo many kills, and no reloading helps too.

..apache?
Isn't it a blackhawk?
I don't believe there was a Blackhawk in the multiplayer component of the game. If you consider the simple fact that the Blackhawk is a Utility Helicopter (what the UH stands for in UH-60 - the designation for the Blackhawk), it generally only possesses a defensive arsenal. The Apache on the other hand is an Attack Helicopter (what the AH stands for in AH-64 - the designation for the Apache) and is armed with offense in mind. The difference is staggering in reality. The average UH-60 is armed with a pair of M2HBs generally (occasionally heavier weapons in the form of miniguns and even the potential for rocketry) where as the AH-64 carries by default a significant quantity of missiles and rockets in addition to it's chin mounted 30mm cannon. Combine that with an avionics package suitable for direct engagment of a variety of ground targets along with superior agility and speed and you'll have a better understanding of the difference.

There are few things guarnteed to ruin an infantry units day quicker than the arrival of any modern attack helicopter, and while even an armed Utility Helicopter presents a significant danger the difference in threat profile is dramatic.
