All too often "Free-to-play" translates into "Free-to-Grind; Pay-to-actually-PLAY"
I can only think of two "free to play" games off the top of my head that are more about games and less about annoying their players into compliance with tedium and mountains of busywork.
You mean pay 2 play like all sub based mmo's

Fact is there are shining examples of F2P/B2P working great just as there are shining examples in sub based mmo's

And their is trash in each sector.

Paying 15 dollars a month in WoW along with paying for expansions is ridiculous

Even worse is the fact that the content(raid) added over the next 12-18 months is content that should have been part of the expansion anyway.
The Lich king took ages to show up before his relevant expansion that content should have been in the expansion not the content that allowed them another 12+ months of sub fees

Sub based mmo's should be completely free to gain access to with a sub the only condition to play the game WoW is the worst offender there's 3 revenue streams in MMO's and it takes from all of them

Not everyone who plays an mmo wants to raid but that's the only content that's ever added to an mmo outside of the expansions

Instead there should be a mix to cater to different players why can't a new zone be added 2-3 times a year new crafting etc.

The advantage of F2P done right where MT's exist the company should be able to see what things the playerbase actually deems is worth money
sssshhhhh your common sense is to much for the wowtards(every wow player on here plays as trolls)not that there's anything wrong with that troll chick's ftw
You know, trolls are know to have bad spelling and grammar. Wink Wink, nudge nudge, pick up a Webster's and go to English 101.

...because we've never come across trolls, jerks or 'riff-raff' in WoW?

I love the Guild Wars one-time payment model. I have no problem with buying expansions or using real money, but I do have a problem with financially tying my time to a game. I'm not the kind of person that can dedicate enough time on some sort of consistent basis to one game to justify paying monthly.

... They're willing to pay a little bit more. Are they willing to pay $5 a month? $10 a month? $20 a month? I don't know yet but I think we will see a shift from free-to-play back to a model where it isn't one size fits all." ...
Otherwise read as "Goddamnit people pay ME to play MMOs!"

...

Actually, I've been part of some free to play games. usually the ones like pokemon Indigo or those games where once you hit level twenty you dont advance anymore and to get the best stuff you have to shell out some money. and they're pretty fun for what they're worth. its all about return on investments. for example, i got minecraft early, and so far its paid for itself in the enjoyment factor ten fold.

I don't think I would go so far as to say that "most free-to-play games are crap" but I would definitely say that they lack the polish of subscription games.

Also, as some have already said, I find myself penny pinching when playing F2P games and constantly looking out for the 'gotcha' item or mechanics that just leech money. I have never been to end-game content like raiding in F2P games as most of the time (yes, I am genralizing) it works out to be more expensive than raiding in a subscription environment.

Ultimately, I believe that subs will outlast this F2P fad we are currently experiencing.

If I find that I am spending more than 1-2 hours in a game on average, then I have no problem spending $15 a month on them. Counting just my main character and including a pay period I didn't mean to purchase, along with one I shouldn't have, WoW cost me $.25 per hour of play over 3 full years, including expansions. If I counted all my character, and got rid of the 3 months I didn't mean to actually buy, and it's probably closer to $.15 or $.20, which I would say is well worth it. I've made far worse purchases for console and PC games than that (looks at Portal 2 as part of the Valve pack).

I, for one, would pay a subscription fee to a good MMO... as long as it doesnt try milk customers for extras on the side.
MMO's initially asked for subscriptions because the developers would constantly add and change the world, change the experience and you paid to play a ever changing game...

... then the sub was for servers only, content change became expansion packs you have to buy, you have to pay for extra services ( name change, server change ) ...and finally virtual goods are sold for real money by the developers.

MMO's when they first were introduced had a lot of flak due to the subscription fee, so had to really work to convince players it was a good thing... so offered everything with the sub, especially content.
WoW worked with that system for years, then got greedy and starting spewing out expansion packs you had to buy, instead of gradually adding to the world that it had been doing all the years.
EvE works like that , every expansion is free... but they are getting greedy too and are trying to add items in game that you need real cash to buy.

In short - return to the pay a sub and get everything free ( new content, items must be earned in game, or bought with in game currency , services must be free ( limited name change , limited server transfers , etc )... then the subscription model will work again.
Players dont want to pay a sub and still need to buy content, services and still be offered items you need to pay real cash for... what the [ expletive ] is the sub for then ?

I would rather have it all for a monthly fee than pay a lot more to play a free to play game, since everything needs to be unlocked which will cost a heck of a lot more than a monthly fee.

I'm not averse to subscription fees but then they need to stop charging full price for the game itself too. Paying a heap of money for a game is always a gamble, but I don't like the fact that I need to like it enough to justify paying monthly for it too.

I'm actually curious to see what GW2 will do. Given the scale of that game, I can't imagine they can live of the initial sale price alone (Especially given the high development costs of such a big MMO), and they issued a statement they won't make any more full-priced extra campaigns like Factions and Nightfall. So... what will they be selling? If they're sneaky and give you less character slots than there are professions (they did in GW1), then they can already make some money of me by offering more character slots, but beyond that? I dunno.

A topic where I'm interestingly in the middle ground. I play Lord of the Rings Online, where I can pay for points, to unlock features, while subscribers get points as part of their subscription to spend on things that enhance their gaming experience (Quest packs, Experience boosters, Special Gear, Crafting recipes, resetting task limits and the like)

The beauty of this is that while you can play for free and enjoy the experience without having to pay a damned penny, you can still opt to pay for stuff (I have) as and when you want or need it.

At least we don't walk into town on LOTRO and have various dubious named characters yelling around the town about cheap gold being available to purchase on various seedy websites. I'd say that Turbine have done a better job at this sort of riff-raff management than Blizzard have ever managed to do.

Big words from someone who doesn't have a company anymore.

I've never been interested in MMO's precisely because I refuse to pay a monthly fee. Guild Wars was a great game that managed the Free-2-Play model just fine (Guild Wars 2 looks to continue this trend), way before those real cash stores started showing up.
wasn't guild wars more Buy 2 play as in you had to buy it?

Oh yeah, listen to Jacobs, the idiot who KILLED Warhammer Online, who didn't listen to feedback from those in GOA working on the servers telling them of TERRIBLE code issues, massive memory leaks, unfinished sectors.

Jacobs hasn't a bloody clue.

i dont mind pay to play so long as you don't make me pay $50 for the first month! (Buy the game and get 30 days free my ass!)

This is y i like the pay model for EVE Online. Cost you the same the first month in the game as it does 30 months into the game.

There's a reason F2P MMOs are F2P, including WoW now, sadly. It didn't have to be that way Blizzard--if you'd handled your expansions better WoW could have been a timeless classic. Anyway, I'd rather play something worth paying for, plus I agree with keeping the riffraff out.
I'm asking this because I'm genuinely interested, not to be a tosser :p. How could they have handled the expansions better? I often see people saying this but never backing it up and it confuses me because I like the expansion work they have put out. The only thing I'd say is that the company need to release more content patches per expansion more frequently, but I guess that's easier said than done.

Well there is an extra ?5 fee for going from a trial to a sub account but you do get the additional 21 days from your trial in addition to the 30 and whoever sent you the trial gets a free month.

It's a shame that more games don't use EVE's system of consistent pricing, free expansions, christmas presents, harsh pvp, player controlled market and play for free if you can grind 360-80mil a month.

He's completely right. I've yet to see a F2P MMO that's actually good. GW2 is the closest we'll get to one imo.

Except GW2 isn't going to be free to play, it's going to be buy to play, big difference there friend.
Which happens to be the reason I said "closest we'll get to one". That said, GW2 is gonna be more free to play than any other F2P title for most people.

BAHAHAHA!

His arguement is subscription games allow more inovation than the countless WoW clones. Yet, his game is one of the most blatent WoW clones out there!

I love Warhammer, but Warhammer Online is a crappier version of World of Warcraft, I could see it the second I logged in. His point may be valid, but his point is completely irrelevant considering what he has done.
