I have a regular practice when given the option to name my character in a game: Males will be named after Kurt Vonnegut (Mass Effect's TRUE hero: Commander Kurt Von Shepard). When the character is female, I'm less consistent. Usually, she'll be named after a female musician (eg: Karen O, Kim Gordon). How do you name your characters? Do you name them after yourself or someone you look up to? Do you make it absurd and humorous? Or are you a nihilistic namer who has no pattern at all?
Depends on the game really, much as this is frowned upon, I quite enjoy roleplaying games (and I mean roleplaying games, not any game with a skill tree featured in some fantasy based setting) and I've got several go-to-characters when Roleplaying in a modern setting, when its fantasy settings its often a bit more difficult as I like to think thoroughly about the name.

As for normal games, I stick to my regular Usernames. Ejiki, Hissori, Namae and Kurokami being some of the most regular ones.

Actually before Dragon Zero was my escapist name, it was my name in games where I had enough space. Otherwise I draw from History, like Thomas Johnathan Jackson or Hiram Ulysses Grant (if you are seeing a pattern give yourself a cookie), Mythology like Heimdall, Sobek, or Gilgamesh, and I always have a Legend of Zelda file with the name Link.

If I find the customization in the game lacking I usually name the character Generik. Otherwise, I name him something random. Ive grown quite partial to the name Agent Squeaks lately.

Most of the time I stay with default names, if possible. If not I use my real name, Connor.

I always call my dude characters ST or Thomsos, most the time Thomsos. And I always name my girl characters Lady.

I usually make up a silly one, like Dickfart Cumstumper. The last name I made though was just "Dora". Dora Shephard. Couldn't be bothered with Mass Effect for some reason. Maybe it was because I couldn' screw around with the last name.

If male, I name him Ty, my nickname, but if it;s a girl, I name her after my favorite fictional character, Alice.

I have a few default names but god forbid I try and name a DnD or MMO character. That could very well take me DAYS. It's horrible.

At any rate, my default names are...

Male - Sol
Female - Apnea

Stupid name - Fancypants

I always name my female character after the next girl I see.

My male characters I name after either myself or the next boy I see.

Seldom do I break this pattern.

They don't have to be real, either.

If the game is Japanese, I look up Japanese names with cool meanings; same goes for Western RPGs.

-As for my Mass Effect character, I named my guy "Rule 34" Shepard.
...His parents met on 4Chan... Well, okay, it was really because I thought you could bed with chicken legs (Tali) when I first heard about the game. Then reality set in, and it seemed as though Rule 34 Shepard would never fulfill his destiny...

...Until Mass Effect 2.

--My Persona 4 MC's name was Kei Yuudai (which means blessed/lucky great hero). I usually stick with that name for JRPGs.

I usually have a hard time thinking of names, in Persona 3 and Mass Effect (first playthrough) I just used my real name; but most of the time I name the character after a Dragon Ball character, usually Goku.

I name my characters after what they look like, a Bob looking character is bob, and a Jill looking character is jill. I am pretty random.
