Something has suddenly hit me like a brick to the head, gaining my undivided attention. I've checked Google, not much there. So here's where I'm trying to get at.

I need mecha games, good ones. If they're free and online, that may be a bonus. I've played Armored Core and some Zoid games which I found to be the most entertaining. So please, help me!

The only thing that I'm actually looking forward to, or that I know of, is Hawken. But that still has a TBA written all over it.

Play Front Mission 3. You can get it off PSN. Or you can get Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries for free from mektek.

Front Mission's a decent one, there's also quite a few F2P MMOs out of Asia that you might check out.

Or you could try Steel Battalion if you need a sudden leave of your senses and money. :D

Holy Hell! I just saw footage for Mechwarrior 5 and I'm impressed at the very least. I love the attention to detail inside the cockpit.

Was this tossed away as a lost project, or is it still going?

An older one that I used to play all the time is Heavy Gear, I don't know where you would find it now, but it was my first real time in a mech game and it was loads of fun. Its probably dated now, but still worth a look.

Steel Battalion is a good single player one. Assault Suits Valken and Night Slave are old 2D mecha games you could emulate. There was a recent douin mecha game but I can't rember what it was called, try googling.

I'll do just that. I'm a huge fan a fast-paced action from the cockpit though.

MW4: Mercs was released for free as a MW5 promotion.

Bootfighter

It's a free (although I think the latest version costs something but the older versions are free)

http://mirrormoon.org/projects/windom

It is surprisingly very fun.

It says Windows XP but, I was running it on my vista machine and POSSIBLY windows 7 machine (can't really remember if I ever played it on my windows 7 machine)

no idea, its probably in development hell due to being an unfortunate victim of the macross/robotech/harmony gold/big west legal snarl that started all those years ago

Hope this doesn't end up in the same grave that Chrono: Resurrection suffered.

Zone of the Enders 2:
If you have a PS2 and like mecha games you have NO excuse for not having played this game.

Also, RAD (Robot+Alchemic+Drive) - for the PS2:
It plays out like some 1980s cheesy mecha/godzilla anime - the controls are a little weird, but they work.

then don't get your hopes up, there has been only one instance of the companies involved backing off and playing nice (it was for the western release of macross plus), and that took titanic levels of pressure from fans on both sides of the pacific as well as other companies watching from the sidelines.

further complicating the issue is the fact that nobody knows who actually owns the original material for macross anymore, which means that the issue will probably never ever be resolved

in short: its probably best to forget about mechwarrior 5 and move on because there is no way its getting out of the quagmire its been pulled into

Chrome Hounds was a pretty good game but I think it may have been 360 only, Not sure if that's any help for you.

EDIT: a quick search turned up these but I don't think they're quite what you looking for.

The Super Robot Wars series is a decent mecha game in the form of a tactical rpg, think Fire Emblem with robots.

Some friends of mine were playing something called Front Mission Evolved, but I don't know anything about it myself. The last mecha robot games I played date back to the PS1 era. x_x

Mechcommander. An RTS where you control games, a bit old and takes a bit of time to get used to, but fun as hell.

G-Nome. Old as shit, but you can probably find it on the net somewhere. I don't think it was well known, but it took a lot of my childhood time away.

Must've beaten it a dozen times.

Since Zone of The Enders : The 2nd Runner has already been mentioned I nominate Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon for PS2. It's easily the best Gundam game ever made. Another one worth a shot is Encounters in Space.

You know that Trailer was fully CGI right? The one with the giant Atlas mech? Yeah that was CGI, not game graphics. I'm 80% sure of that.

Why not try out Mechwarrior 4. It was recently released online for absolutely free?

Also you may want to check out an Indie game in development called Hawken. It's still in Alpha though. :(

I'd counter that and say Zeonic Front is better.

Also, if you're going the MSG way I'd say go for Gundam vs Zeta Gundam.
It's pretty much FVZ + more stuff.

(Think Street Fighter 4 verse Super Street Fighter 4)
