Play Front Mission 3. You can get it off PSN. Or you can get Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries for free from mektek.
Holy Hell! I just saw footage for Mechwarrior 5 and I'm impressed at the very least. I love the attention to detail inside the cockpit.

Was this tossed away as a lost project, or is it still going?
i know one of the developers personally and yes, they scrapped it
Don't take this the wrong way, but I REALLY hope your a troll, or lieing, or something. Not attacking you, but that is just too depressing to someone who grew up on the mechwarrior games. Then again, seeing as it went 2 years after that first trailer came out with no real news on the actual game, just that legal bullshit involving that macross thing, I had a feeling this is what happened...

fingers crossed it may someday get out of it. Hell, I'd gladly take even another Mechassault game, those were pretty damn good in their own right.

OT: I personally recommend the Mechwarrior games (pc) and the Mechassault games (xbox). They were all pretty enjoyable, but what really made them for me was that feel that you were actually controlling a larger than life walking tank. One of the problems I had with the few Eastern Mech games I played was that I just really didn't feel like I was playing as a giant robot. They just didn't really have the sense of being massive 30-100 ton machines, felt more like I was playing as a dude in a robot suit. Having a few buildings/trees around to measure the mech against isn't the same thing. They need to make noise, destroy things just by stepping on/threw them, have a real sense of weight to them...then again, you're probably not looking for that feeling, since as far as I know I'm the only one who really is. A pity, but you'll still like the Mechwarrior and Mechassault games, I think.

Captcha: genius, predde.
Why, thank you, I think.
well, i promise you i'm no troll. you want his email? to meet him in person? i could really easily arrange that. people go in and out of his class all the time and he loves guests.

Well.

I'm amazed that no one's mentioned Heavy Gear, it was one of the better Mecha games I've ever played (next to Mechwarrior 2/Mercs/3).

Front Mission Evolved I've only played a few levels in. It doesn't seem -horrible- like some people say, but my tolerance for bullshit is higher than most, and it does have a lot of that.

Anyway, what we really need to know is what do you like about the Mecha games? Customizing your Mech? Fast-paced combat? Long-range tactical combat? The feel, the atmosphere? I mean, I have some Zoids game for Gamecube which could be classified as a Mech game, same thing with Robotech:Battlecry, but they really don't have the same sort of scale or customization as Mechwarrior 2, or the same sort of persistent story/salvaging/"growing" with your mech as Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries or Mechwarrior 3. Armored Core, I've only played through AC4 and loved it, a friend of mine showed me one on the PSP and it controlled well and felt good but I didn't have much time to play it.

MechAssault I found too "arcadey." It's fun, it's fast paced, but you don't get to configure your loadouts or customize your mech to the depth that Mechwarrior 3 had. Anyway, you should try Shattered Steel. Bioware will never make a sequel to it even though they teased me with one.

MechCommander and MC2 are basically Jagged Alliance or Commandos with Mechs. They're sorta just tactics games. And I love SRPGs, and I love RTT games, but I prefer being IN the Mech rather than seeing it from far away...

G-Nome I'm glad someone mentioned, which also has an RTS in the same world - Dominion: Storm over Gift 3.

Last, but definitely not least, is Earthsiege. Earthsiege and Earthsiege 2 are great games, but Starsiege was a fantastic Mech game. It came out in 99 so it looks similar to Mechwarrior 3, but you might prefer the weapons or story or the HERCs that are used. If you want some turn-based strategy games from that series, look up Mission Force: Cyberstorm and Cyberstorm 2: Corporate Wars. I loved those both, but Starsiege is still my favorite out of the Earthsiege series. It later evolved into Tribes, which I still hold dear to my heart (Tribes 2 anyway...) but those aren't mech games.

So, just to summarize, Mechwarrior 2, its expansions, 3, its expansion, Heavy Gear 2, then Heavy Gear 1 if you liked it. Those are my favorite Mecha games. If you want quicker more actiony with less tinkering around on your equipment and loadouts, go Mechassault or Front Mission Evolved, or Shattered Steel.

Please be kidding. And from your other post, yes, I would like his email, or some way to contact him. If he doesn't mind talking to random Mechwarrior fans, I would sorta like to at least know what happened and why development was canceled, maybe conduct an interview. Mektek would appreciate it.

is that avatar from Romantically Apocalyptic?
Nah, I wanted an avatar of a person with a screen for a face, so I Googled "monitors" and "suits", picked two I liked, and badly photoshopped them on.

+5 for reading RA, though!

OT: Also, I'm fairly sure that the original Mechcommander games are available for free online. I never got them to run myself, but hey! Maybe you can.

They're RTS, but still mechs.

Ah Harmony Gold, their policies don't make any sense at all. As if they couldn't make a quick buck from localizing Macross products instead of their ripoff. Sadly, Robotech did introduce me to the macross world.
heh, if only the legal debate were that simple...

I am currently re-playing Mechwarrior 4: Merc atm (my personal favorite in the Mech series) though I miss the live-action movies from Merc Commander (1/2) and Merc 4 (so cheesy and sooooo damn goood ... the Mechwarrior 4:vengeance intro was epic, and one of my favorite .... z0mg ... watch out for the LRMs ... oh noesss!). Too bad I displaced the disks from the Mechwarrior 4 package I bought a while back.

My biggest gripe with FM:E is customization, as well as the lack of freedom due to its linear structure which is further ruined by its length and mech-design restriction. 5 hours on normal difficulty, that's too short. Add to that the restriction a lot of the levels have ... I want to play my 2-leg mecha not some quad-leg or hover-leg and one of the definitive aspect of mech combat from MechWarrior to Front Mission (the tactic games), is that every enemy was a threat, a big one. FM:E felt too arcadey in that aspect, and while I love arcade games, it wasn't a good one at it and the boss fights ended up being cheap (the last boss fight got on my nerves). Add to that the cheesy storyline, and it made even the crappiest harem-anime look like a masterpiece.

I mean, the Gundam/Macross PSP game those other fellas are discussing in this thread have more depth, I would say on the same level as the MechWarrior series, than FM:E had.

Now that you mention Heavy Gears, played that a long time ago, couldn't get my hands on HG2 at the times, think I might attempt to get a copy, and hope it works on Win 7.

I actually just started playing Mech4:Mercs yesterday (MTX 3.1 and the HDP2 that came out 2 weeks ago, textures are very pretty now!), and I'm enjoying it so far. I still think Mechwarrior 3 is my personal favorite when it comes to customization and planning and such, but I agree with you that FM:E is kind of a joke. It doesn't feel like a MechWarrior game, it feels like a MechAssault game (with somehow LESS customization). I wanted to like it, but like you said, the story is unbearably bad, the designs are uninspiring, the combat is too silly, and everything dies when I press the win button. Mech4 I am enjoying BECAUSE things don't die quickly and because I can't just load 16 medium lasers in the torsos and steamroll bitches even when my arm gets shot off.

I don't remember it's name, but there's an article on the escapist about an Indie-studio making a Mecha game. And it actually looks like it was made by a AAA studio.
