Theres something I don't get, 2 things actually about school groups like nerds and sports people.

1.If nerd is just another group why is it seen mostly as an insult?

2. Why are people who play certain. video games aren't considered gamers?

What I mean by 1. is that if I was to go up to say a football player and say "HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA YOU PLAY FOOTBALL HAHAHAHA" he would just say "yeah I do" though in most cases I see when someone is called a nerd its a genuine insult. What I am trying to get at is not so much why but how it society became like this (I.E. shun the most of the time smart people and embrace the stupid muscle man) but its why when did we go so wrong that it came to be like this?

And what I mean by 2. is that almost every person I know plays Call of Duty but if someone says they are a gamer the Call of Duty player still makes fun of them, this isn't really more of a question because the answer is just"most teenagers are on the verge of being life threateningly stupid" but I mean come on, really? DISCLAIMER: I do not hate the Call of Duty games.

Deeply ingrained preconceptions. Now don't ask me to explain further cos I won't.

I think the difference of 1 is; you can be smart, but still commit to social activities like sports and so on. Nerds, are smart people who are socially shy and so avoid activities such as sports. It isn't so much that the person is smart, because I know plenty of smart people who were popular and took part in sports and other 'cool' activities at school.

2. Well, I see the problem, but I don't think there is much that can be done about it. The way things are going though, gamers won't suffer much stigma in the future.

Oh, sorry if it came off as if I were saying that all sporty people were stupid I was just saying that even when they are stupid they are still "cooler" than a smart person.

And also I DO hope dweeb comes back and also Rad or Groovy it would be better than "*GRUNT* DUDE THATS SO BEAST IT WAS SO BEAST I DONT EVEN KNOW HOW BEAST IT WAS!!!!!!*UN GRUNT*"

No, it didn't really come across that way. I was more just trying to point out that it isn't the intelligence level that causes animosity, but the recreational activities those people engage in. Nerds are nerds because they like LARPing (for example), rather than because they can beat the football player in a debate.

The whole thing is a matter of perspective.

To most, reading comic books and knowing the history of the characters is considered geeky and/or childish. But surely knowing all of the positions of football players and all ther names, where they used to play, etc. is just as geeky and/or childish, simply with a different subject matter? This is one of the great double standards that will always exist until the majority of the people think along the lines of what I've just said.

Anyone up for a cultural revolution?

1. Because people are idiots.

2. Because those games aren't mainstream enough, presumably.

That is all. From me.

I always assumed that people who are on the internet calling other people nerds were just being ironic (most were just ignorant of it).

Then again, the same people who insult gamers are usually the same people who spout "that's gay". *shrug*

I would think that nerd is less an insult now, since society is so completely dependent on computer equipment. Without the nerds, where would we be?

I think that's mainly a high school thing. I've noticed at my college no one cares and almost everyone I know plays video games (I'm an art student, not a science major). I guess people think there's more skill in sports but it can go either way. I was on the women's varsity lacrosse team for four years and I also played Halo four years. To be honest, I'm better as a goalie than I am in Halo. I guess it's all a matter of opinion and preferences.

Also high schoolers are dweebs.

I go to a tech college (RIT to be exact). Hockey is our big sport here and whenever the opposing team scores a goal, the crowd will chant, "That's alright, that's okay, we're gonna be your boss someday!"

Thought it pertained.

Similar thoughts struck me when I saw videos of droves of people lining up in the early hours in the freezing cold to buy Modern Warfare 2.
One of my friends did the same thing but for the release of Burning Crusade and was branded a geek the very next day at school because of it.

The thing that gets me is that the people mocking him would have probably been in line for Modern Warfare 2. Do they not see how it's the same??

Yeah I go to RIT also, and hockey IS huge here. I'm more surprised at the amount of WoWers who never leave their room. Kinda nice though, keeps the Quarter Mile unclogged.

Because...nerd is an insult? Gamers are not the same group as nerds! You can play games and still be cool, social or whatever. Nerds are those people who don't like sports, they are smart, but they can't even talk to a girl, they probably wear something, that looks boring or casual.
That is a group, that no (sane) people want to be in.
When you say that someone plays football, how can he consider it as an insult? When someone says that your a nerd, then he probably thinks that you have no social skills, that you have no style, you like to do your homework and you have a body of a girl.
(depends on the definition of the word ''nerd'')

I agree with this man.

Nerd =/= Gamers.

I'm a gamer with ALOT of friends knows everyone round school and is the funny guy. I'm known as camp rather than nerdy. Though of course idiots associate my camp nature as being gay. Which again to idiots is an insults.
