Im nervous. Part of me thinks "this could finally be it" however a bigger part of me is thinking they will do something daft like bird sonic or something.

You started off at the top, had a brief success with 3D through the much loved Sonic Adventure series
Much loved? I don't remember that. Anakin bloody Skywalker as Tails? Ch'yeah right. Running around helping humans? Pffft.

Sonic has been dead since Flicky's Island if you ask me. The franchise was perfect up til then, until they decided Sonic had to be 'updated' as the console wars escalated into the 3D World. [anyone else feel since 3D graphics that gaming has kinda... lost some of its magic?]

Mario pulled it off, but then again he was a darn slight slower than Sonic. Plus Nintendo just seemed to get it right, whereas Sonic Team failed miserably.

On topic with the news of a new 2D game? Too little, too late. Sonic -was- my childhood hero. He made me aware of Japan and video gaming, and most likely had a small part in my growing up. Nowadays I see Mario as more a childhood hero, and I didn't even have a bloody SNES :(

Oh, and can someone confirm that Tails is now a 'girl'? My ex whom works at Gamestation told me, and I couldn't believe it.
In my honest opinion, Sonic CD proves that all they really needed to do was keep it 2D, and expand the world. That's all. Sonic CD is pretty much side by side with Sonic and Knuckles, the game was easily one of the best Sonic titles around, no doubt and did time travel well. This new Sonic game just needs to follow the ways of CD, and it will be a hit. They also need to re-release Sonic CD as well for god's sakes.

Wait, is this going to be about speed or about being a platformer?
Both?

Now they need to fix the level design. Really, go and play the old games, especially the first two, and count the number of times you can fall into an inescapable deathtrap in the entire game. Chances are it'll only be on one or two zones.

Now do the same with the first level of a recent Sonic game. You'll probably get a higher number.

Sonic games have gotten, alongside their universally shitty 3D camera and controls that seem to get worse and worse with every passing installment, to be bound up in levels designed for maximum frustration to the gamer, and with cheap death pits everywhere making a mockery of one of the core concepts of the original Sonic, that you were protected by having rings, and as long as you could reclaim them when you got hit you could carry on.
Check the update, I don't know if you'll be overjoyed or dismayed. I actually don't remember the inescapable deathtraps (except one, the mining zone in 2...those bastards) but I'll check out the rest of them.

Not long ago I thought the old sonic games were amazing so I decided to get an emulator and play them again for nostalgia value, and I realized they really aren't that fun. You just zoom through stages and always hit unavoidable enemies or spikes because you're going too fast. I found it to be very annoying and not fun to play. Maybe its because when i first played it i was a kid and every game was gold to me so im not looking forward to this game, it will probably be crap.

Nothing will ever beat Sonic 3 and Knuckles. If I want to play a good Sonic game, I will play that. There's no need for this series to keep going.

Took Sega long enough, but finally they seem to have figured out that they needed to actually REVIVE the franchise, rather than slapping Sonic's face onto other half-hearted games.

With this and a GOOD Batman game out, does this mean that we will soon have a good 3D Sonic game too? Or that at least, Team Sonic is undergoing some quality control?

I guess Sony had to show them that a 2-D game can exsist in todays world. This should be good so long as there is no 3-D
What if it's 3D graphics on a 2D plane?
I have yet to see a curent side scroller that didn't have 3-D graphics. So long as they don't have 3 planes as in LBP it should be alright.
Yeah I really couldn't understand why they haven't done that before. I was sure the Sega would have released some DLC game, that was short and simple. But what ever, if they feel like releasing a full length game under the same idea then I guess that is fine too. I just hope that this project doesn't provide too many opportunities to screw up.

I'm looking forward to this, it could well be Sonic's triumphant return. Probably not, but still, there's always a chance...

However, I want to shoot the guy who came up with the project name. I mean, Needlemouse? Seriously?

It's still going to suck.

Going back to 2D won't magically improve their terrible level design. Granted it's much harder to screw up a 2D level than a full 3D one, but knowing Sonic team they will always find ways to screw it up.

It's not going to be nearly as good as the old games. Don't get your hopes up.
Sonic Rush was exellent. This will also be exellent. Do us a favor and get your head out of your ass, will you?

EDIT: I Don't mean to be rude, but I always get a bit upset when people talk about Sonic and, for some stupid-ass reason, overlook the recent handheld titles. The series hasn't been ALL bad these days, people.
Sonic Rush has an 8.2 on metacritic. That's certainly not bad, but it's not the "OMFG SONIC WILL BE AWESOME AGAIN" quality people think a new 2D sonic game will have.

Even if Sega makes a decent Sonic game, if it does nothing to advance the franchise and merely copies the old games I won't say it's a great game. It's been years since those games came out. By now they should have made vast improvements upon the formula. While a game that is essentially a copy of an old (Like Megaman 9) can hold up as small download game, I doubt it would be enough for a console game.

FUCK YES!!!!!!!! This is what I have been bitching and moaning over for so damn long I don't even know. I want a truly current gen game with 1080p graphics on the level of the PS3/360 with all old school 2D game play. Make it gorgeous to look at. So gorgeous that it makes out eyes bleed as we fly by at Sonic speeds! That is going to be super sweet. It is good to see that the Sega Execs finally got their heads out of their asses.
My sentiments exactly.

Like I said somewhere before, all they need to do is expand the world. Sonic CD did that, along with a well done time travel mechanic, and it was one of the best Sonic games to date. Sonic 2 had quite a few hours on it and it wasn't huge, but Sonic CD dwarfed it in a sense.

Considering 4 hour games are going full price just because they are 3D and pretty, I think Sonic can do well enough, despite how much it's advanced.

It only took SEGA how many years? Since Sonic Heroes came out I think, most fans have been begging them to do this. Now if they just keep their head on straight and don't involve their crappy extra characters and keep it STRICTLY Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy then they MIGHT have resurrected Sonic. I'm a big Sonic fan, and I haven't even been able to stomach most of their recent games. Sonic Unleashed had great day levels but come on, Sonic and the Secret Rings? Sonic and the Black Knight? Shadow the Hedgehog? I could go on, but we know the crap they put out.
