Well I could see this working as a dissection of young Dante's psychology. But the super happy fun time vibe of the first four games is strangely asbsent. So until I actually get my hands on a copy...DO.NOT.WANT.

While I do think it's far too early to take those sorts of measures, it's clear that a lot of fans aren't happy about this. Not just on this forum, but pretty much everywhere I've looked, even on Capcom's own forums.
But still, this might not even be Dante. It might some...clone or something (hence the experiments in the trailer) or someone who think he's Dante or...something.
Or maybe it's just my wishful thinking...

Well, looks like im going to be enjoying DMC4... as 5 is going to look like shit. Sure, it may be good, but I cant possibly play as that.... abomination!

Great, another game I can take off of my waiting list. That Dante looks ridiculous. They should have just remade the original DMC. This is just stupid. First rule when making a new game in the series is don't disappoint the fans. If the fans hate it how the hell do they expect anyone else to buy it?

"hmm new guy, looks nothing like Dante and this looks like an outsocured reboot, hmm i bet this is Dante"
Lo and behold our new dante has arrived, seems he was alittle damaged in transit.

Why can't they just make another one with Dante and Nero again seeing as at the end of DMC4 Nero asks Dante if he'll see him again and Dante just waves as if to say "see ya later" as if giving us a hint that Nero would be in the next one again. But no instead they completely reboot the series and make Dante look like an emo 16 year old.
Also what's the point in rebooting the series if there is still so much stuff unanswered like practically everything about Nero. You can't just jam a new character in a game and let us know almost nothing about him. There's still so much unanswered story from 4 to go off of! Who is Nero really? How did he gain his arm? Is he housing the soul of Dante's brother Virgil and that's why he managed to resurrect Yamato? Will Dante have to fight him again, or can they be a team against the demons? Isn't there enough there to at least start to continue the story with?

Boring gunplay.

Incredibly fun and interesting gunplay and combat.
Swords.
Big red coats.
Snarkiness.
You know, I'm not sure why this exists as a reboot. The series isn't that old - it hardly needs rebooting, and what will it be rebooted into? My guess is the same game, but with a completely different protagonist and setting, while alienating fans of the series as it is now. I admit, Ninja Theory could do a good job, and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but from that, I'd say its off to a bad start. The only thing I can honestly say I enjoyed in that trailer was Dante's living staff/whip weapon, but I hope its not there as a permanent replacement to his sword, seeing as that was a gift from his father, and linked to the most awesome backstory that has been constructed.
I guess time will tell if this is any good. I'm sceptical, but I'll give Ninja Theory a chance. Here's hoping its at all good.

okay, why does dante look like a keanu reeves rip off... I mean not even a good one. At least make him a just a LITTLE beefier, he looks like they chained up a skinny little geek who really wouldn't be much of a demon hunter whatsoever. I know the original Dante wasn't all that buff, but at least it seemed believable

Anyway, I think it would be interesting to see how Dante would probably look and act in a more realistic and grittier world (not that it's a new thing in games and movies nowadays).
Not that I'm playing Devil's advocate here (see what I did there),but people are just so afraid of change that it's surreal sometimes. I'm not even that optimistic about this reboot either, but if you ask me for a reason to give any reboot a chance this is all I can say:

So they took a perfectly functional series with an incomplete story and rebooted it? It's not like it's an old series, it has a current gen incarnation already! If it's like the trailer, then the gameplay looks good (now that Bayonetta showed how to do the combat system properly) but the artists, the level designers, the character designers, they all need to be shot... or at least have their wages cut until the can produce something a little better!
Might I offer a solution that doesn't involve an entire redesign though? Don't call it Devil May Cry. It'll only sell less to the fanboys (ie. me, though I'm not the kind that misses a good game experience based on a name) the way they have it now, because that is not Dante and those are not Devil May Cry environments.
