Not a single one of those properties originated in the 80s. You know, back when Link found his first boomerang, and hasn't stop re-discovering it since.

I don't know if we should harp on Nintendo because they keep using the same characters or because they maintain such tight control over their properties (that's good business), but some elements of their games could certainly use some changing up.

Additionally, the lack of price drop in their core games is disturbing (though I am not sure if that is them or some other factor I cannot account for). I like my Wii for the most part, but having Zelda still cost sixty bucks this long after launch, while allowing for boatloads of cheap shovel-ware, is bloody-well criminal if you ask me. How is a poor student to deal?

As for the console itself...mmm. Interesting, but since I am getting sick of the constant need to make more and more consoles, this annoys me somewhat. And I was under the impression that all this Kinect and Playstation Move nonsense were attempts at prolonging the life of their consoles since making new ones costs fucktons to develop and selling them at a loss for the entirety of their manufacture is not exactly fun for the whole company.

If this is indeed Nintendo "catching up" (I don't really buy that) than why are Microsoft and Sony already at the helm of their next projects, ready to start giving us release dates? They'll never bury Nintendo, no matter how hard they try to stay ahead since Nintendo always grabs up segments of the market that the others leave behind and these segments more or less include "everyone else who isn't really a gamer" and because their brands go back well before the both of them. And this is coming from someone who hasn't exactly been kind to Nintendo in the past.

Oh well. At least with this we'll maybe get some crazy new Suda 51 games or something.

So, "Omega Bros" will be the new game of the next Nintendo system.
Now introducing new special character because the developer always wanted to be apart of the previous games but was held out until now: Goku!

Goku will be the new Noob character because the A button on the controller will do a Kamehameha which will destroy everything in a frontal cone, just like Mario's current Smash Ability, except Goku's will be spam-able.
The B button will be a charged attack that drops a Spirit Bomb on the map destroying all structures, but the ground and pushed your character into the ground for 5 seconds, no way to get out unless 5 seconds are up or Goku attacks you.
Goku's grab will spin you around and around like Mario's, but every time he lets you go, you always fly off the screen.
Goku's Super Power: Will proceed to transform into SSJ1, then SSJ2, finally finishing with SSJ3. After SSJ3 is completed, your character can no longer be controlled by your controller. Instead, he kills his enemy with a single punch that cant be dodged or shielded and continues to finish the story mode on extreme difficulty and unlocks all the achievements for you.

They'd better not push Skyward Sword to this new console. Then again, if they do, that means I have no reason to keep a Wii, which means I can sell it.

"Nintendo is doing this one right," an anonymous source told the site. "[It's] not a gimmick like the Wii."
Right, because they did the Wii "wrong." That's why it was just a "gimmick" and sold TONS AND TONS of units to EVERYONE.

I'm so sick of seeing bullshit statements like this. From most perspectives, but especially from a business perspective, the Wii was a monumental success.

Well, Nintendo have essentially evaporated all my trust. With a new console, I'm going to wait at least a year before I see what games are out, and only then I may get it. Nintendo's utter draught of first + second party titles, plus nothing but shovelware after that, means the wii is the worst console I've ever bought, by miles. They've a lot to make up for.

In its own report, IGN [http://wii.ign.com/articles/116/1161875p1.html] claims the new unit will be "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
...what.

I don't know, I'm skeptical, although at least they're doing it right and giving publishers plenty of time to play around with the hardware, but more powerful than the PS3 and significantly so? I'll have to see it to believe it.
It's not really that hard to believe. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law]

Ya know what else is a massive financial success? Farmville. Hell McDonalds sells millions of burgers on a daily basis but it doesn't change the fact they use grade D beef that I likely wouldn't feed to my dogs. And that's what the Wii is. The Wii is the bottom of the barrel shlock that appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Beyond that though the Wii was a gimmick and did do it wrong. Outside of horrible motion controls the Wii had fuck all to offer you couldn't already get on the Gamecube. The Wii's only success is that it was able to move off the shelves because it was being shilled to people that were essentially the Farmville crowd with slightly more disposable income.

Honestly, what else did it offer? Did it usher in an awesome online multi player experience? Hardly. The original version of Xbox Live was head and shoulders above the Wii multi player. Did it advance the hardware of it's predecessor? Again, fail. The Wii was a bloody Gamecube with shitty motion controls. Did it bring us awesome new IPs that change how we look at gaming? Well if you count belching out the same Zelda, Mario, and Kirby titles we've seen since the days of the NES then sure. Otherwise, again the Wii comes up short.

Bottom line is that the Wii was great at getting money out of casuals and non gamers but it's list of accomplishments begins and ends there. It was a last gen console with a shitty gimmick and in a fair and just world would of went the route of the Virtual Boy and been summarily forgotten about except to be mocked. However, Nintendo got lucky and caught dog shit covered lightning in a bottle.

It doesn't matter who the consoles aimed at.
It doesn't matter how powerful it claims to be.
It doesn't matter how cheap it is.
It doesn't matter whether or not it sucks in casual / hardcore gamers.

The first game for this console will be a Mario game, followed by a Zelda game, then a Metroid game...
Nintendo doesn't have a soul, it will just release whatever is guaranteed to sell untold squillions more copies and make them even more rich. So they can rehash and ruin your childhood franchises.

/rant
sigh...this argument pisses me off, do you not realize this is what EVERYONE in the gaming industry does? Why stop selling products that sells, This is simple business logic. Why is that Nintendo gets in shit for this while every other producer can get away with it. hell, Nintendo has a hard enough time juggling what ip's they have already.
Nothing wrong with doing that. I for one love it when tried and true series release new games and the ONLY reason I haven't sold my wii a long time ago is to play Mario and Zelda games when they come out. However, perhaps this analogy will help understand why Nintendo takes more heat for this phenomenon than other companies. Mario and Zelda are a lot like strawberries. You see, strawberries are both delicious AND healthy, making them almost as perfect a food as you can get. However, if your entire diet consists of eating a bowl of strawberries every year or so followed by long periods of starvation, that's a little fucked up.
Yes it would suck, but that is why you eat some banana and pineapples on the side. Nintendo produces the best strawberries, why do they have to get into the banana or pineapple business? just go out in and buy bananas and pineapples from other companies.

In other words, if you play and only play Nintendo games, your are doing yourself a disservice of missing the other ninety percent of what the gaming industry has to offer. To me, that's a little fucked up.
That works for people with money, but if you only can afford one console it is advisable to stay away from the wii, as all it has to offer is strawberries. Most bananas and pineapples are available only to HD systems.

Will they finally call it the "Dolphin?" Ever since that name was a working title for the Gamecube, I've wanted to get a Nintendo Dolphin.

I wonder if it's going to be backwards-compatible with GameCube games...

Also, I pray they won't release it for another year or three. I've just gotten a PS3 and my budget needs to recover.

Trust Nintendo to get ahead of the curve.

No gimmicks? I might even just be pleased.
Which curve are they ahead of, again?

It's not the graphics curve, that's for damn sure.

It's not the online system curve. No siree.

It's not the new story-driven IP curve, considering they haven't released a new character-based franchise in the past 10 years (unless you count Professor Layton).

It's not the casual curve anymore, either. Apple has Nintendo nailed to the wall on that front, proving that casual gamers will buy tons of games if they're easily accessible, unlike Nintendo's floundering WiiWare service which they don't even advertise.

The only curve Nintendo has a jump on right now is the fat housewife curve in selling the Wii as an exercise device, and the bad news on that is that Kinect is murdering that curve with titles like "Dance Central". It may very well be that DC is the only reason to own Kinect but it's a damn good one, especially in the eyes of fat housewives.

So no, Nintendo is not ahead of any curve. They've fallen behind the curve by stubbornly clinging to notions like "No one wants online play!" and "Graphics don't matter!"

The Wii is the "Macarena" of the console world: for a period of time, everyone though it was awesome, but when we all look back, we can only ask ourselves "Why did we like that?".

I wonder what PC hardware will make it on here. Could we see the first console with higher than DX9 graphics capabilities, like Tessellation etc? Might improve port quality, but then again it is rare for Nintendo ports....
Well, if they're aiming for 'better' than current gen competitors, I'd imagine DirectX 11 hardware derivatives would be pretty likely.

Nintendo has no investment in 'DirectX' equivalent hardware at all, currently. The 360 has graphics hardware that essentially forms the prototype for the PC DirectX 10 stuff (not to mention it shares the actual DirectX apis)

The PS3 doesn't use anything to do with DirectX directly, but it's graphics hardware is derived from Nvidia 7800 PC hardware... Which... Was designed to meet DirectX 9 specifications.

The Wii, meanwhile, has hardware built around a completely different model. Where directX style hardware involves pixel shaders, vertex shaders, etc...

The Wii, like the gamecube before it, uses a TEV model, which, while more limited than shaders are, is also fundamentally using an entirely different concept as it's foundation.

It seems highly unlikely that this TEV model will be extended much (though for Wii & gamecube backwards compatability to be possible, it must at the very least be possible to emulate it.)

Since the company that originally designed this specific, and rather unique graphics hardware was later bought out by ATI (hence the logo found on the side of the Wii), this seems a logical starting point for the kind of hardware this new console will contain.

It Will either be a custom extension to the Wii's hardware design, or more likely, a specialised modification of ATI/AMD's most recent PC hardwre.
(Eg, a modified design originally created with DirectX 11 or 12 in mind.)

Well said.

And you know the worst part? Nintendo could OWN the entire market if they just got off their asses and provided decent 3rd party support for a change.

I've dealt with Nintendo's dev tools and Microsoft's dev tools. Nintendo's tools are the goddamn stone age by comparison. Likewise, the weaker hardware with the Wii ensured that devs didn't want to develop for it, nor would it receive all of the AAA title ports like Assassin's Creed and Bioshock.

If Nintendo just started giving a rat's ass about 3rd parties (like MS and Sony do), they could drive MS and Sony out of business. All Nintendo would need to do is:

-Develop a proper, easy to use online system
-Release a console with competitive graphics
-Develop better developer tools for 3rd parties

And BAM! If every PS360 title was also released on Wii this gen, with comparable graphics and online support, there would be very few reasons to own a PS360, barring a few exclusive titles here and there.

The generation curve.

Microsoft doesnt intend to replace the 360 until 2015 and Sony doesnt even have plans for the PS4 yet.

If this new Nintendo console is getting showcased at E3, then it could be out by early 2014.

Mario's nose is growing...
I'll believe it when I see it.
Hey it wouldn't be hard - tech's advanced plenty since the other two were first made. The only question is if there's ANY IP that Nintendo has that would take advantage of even more power. Can't think of many WII games that really taxed the system in the way that, say, Halo 2 did of the original Xbox, or many that would really look better with HD graphics :/
I wouldn't see the purpose in it because I don't think they can capture the crowd that is willing to shell out the money for the new system. So basically i'm agreeing with you, Mario or RPG fans want a game that looks good but the ps2 was the oldest of last generation and could make the shiny more cartoon stuff look incredible.

Also bluray, they are choosing to forgo it and I think thats gonna be bad. The videogame industry and movie industry has barely scratched the surface of what blu ray is capable of and it gets cheaper and cheaper to make for each passing year.

One could argue that this next console would finally be bringing Nintendo to THIS generation of home consoles, and I don't just mean graphics-wise. Nintendo has even said that their primary reason for releasing the Wii was because they initially wanted to release motion controls on the GC but wisely decided that the whole thing needed a rebranding. Thus, they even admit that it was last-gen hardware.

Furthermore, Nintendo has bullshitted us about graphical capability in the past. Let's wait and see if they actually deliver on any of these promises (and finally develop a decent online system, though I'm far from holding my breath on that one).
