The only real ways to make a new pokemon generation interesting would be:

1. An Pokemon MMORPG (without monthly payments)
2. A Pokemon game where you play a team rocket goon at make your way up to the top and plot evil plans.
3. A Pokemon game with free career choices/character customization

And I do believe that 5th gen will be a 3DS title. Nintendo seems to have something released with every new major system to get people to buy it right from the start, and Pokemon would certainly accomplish that.
I just hope the 3DS is backwards compatable with DS games. Nintendo seems to be the only company that cares about Backwards compatability, since the Wii can play gamecube games and the first 2 or 3 DS's can play GBA games.

Although they seem to be moving away from that... I just hope they still make it BC. I just got a DS Soulsilver damnit! I don't wanna have to buy another one.

That's hardware, not software. The DS and DS lite can't use WPA.
Oh really? Huh, didn't know that...

Oh, 1 more thing I want from the new games:

MULTIPLE SAVE SLOTS!

How curious. Thank you for the link! I never realised that, but then again I played only the first game. Moreso interesting is just how well they line up with reality. Its not just the cities.

It is backwards-compatible with DS games. That's one of the few things we know about the 3DS.

Really? Well thats cool. But its still lame if they announce a new one this soon after Soulsilver came out...

But whatever, I'll just end up bitching and then buying it a while after it comes out, probably just in time for the VI generation.

Both groups of GenIV games blow the first gen out of the water, IMO.

And yeah. But it'll never happen, sadly. Nintendo would never make a PC game.
I find (and I'd assume I'm not the only one, though perhaps part of the minority) that a lot of the newer poke'mon are unlikeable. Yes the artwork has improved as have several gameplay aspects, but overall the games aren't really any more fun than the originals were largely because so many of the pokemon seem....crap.

At this stage (I say that, but I've felt this since gen 2) I'd like them to significantly update the combat for the next version (I want decent animations dammit!), outside of that I can't really see how they can improve it (real time would be nice, but there's not really any need to break the turn based formula). The bulk of the other changes have, in real terms, added relatively little to how the game is played, and for me at least the general world has lost a lot of its appeal.

A spin off where you play as the new Team Rocket trainee? 8 gyms replaced with eight hidden training zones, the elite four replaced with the Team Rocket Executives (stronger of course), possibly the ability to steal pokemon, machine-building mini games, etc.

Pokémon MMORPG through the Wii. Massive 3D game, character based off of your Mii.

Nintendo prints off money forever.

1. Stop making new Pokemon. Really, just use the 500 you've already made. Any more would just be silly (not to mention they would look like shit, if Gen IV is any indication).
2. Make a 16 badge quest. After releasing Heart Gold and Soul Silver, nobody's going to want to settle for a 8 badge, single continent quest again. Remember how disappointing Ruby/Sapphire were in this regard after the original G/S/C?
3. Use the 3DS's power and make battles 3D, with detailed animations for each attack. Keep the turn-based system though, to keep the strategic elements in.
4. Get rid of the damn HMs. I'm tired of carrying HM bitches around, cutting my available team slots to 4 instead of 6.
5. Don't make anymore Teams (Rocket/Magma/Aqua/Galactic/whatever) and don't use the same old "You must defeat the Legendary Pokemon threatening to destroy the world" plot device. It really is getting old.
6. Put a twist on the "Fight 8 Gym Leaders/Catch Legendary Pokemon between the 7th and 8th Gym/Fight Elite 4 and Champion" routine. Any twist will do, just change the formula up a little.

THAT is what Gen V needs.
This, honest to god this. I mean, for me Gen I was great because I was a young kid playing my own Pokemon adventure with Pikachu at my side, and then Squirtle when I got blue. Gold and Silver took everything I loved about Yellow and Blue and improved on it. From there the series has just gone down hill. Sure HG and SS are fun, but the only reason for that is because they are remakes of the last good games to come out of the series. Unless they actually change the forumla, and stop pulling more crappy Pokemon out of their arses, the series isn't going anywhere for me. However as we know, Nintendo would sooner go bankrupt than actually modify a formula that sells like hotcakes.

They aren't making new ones, the original creator made well over 1000 to start with, just with all the hardware generations and milking they cut the ones released into bite sized chunks.

I agree with mike, but no nothing will ever beat the original 151 pokemon just can't happen, it was new it was fresh, the idea of having duels with super powered pets, that originality is in and of itself what made mon great. today's pokemon is just rehash of the original.

I would play a pokemon mmo in a heart beat, I remember back in elementary school thinking how awesome it would be to strike out on my own adventure in the poke-world, and not follow the same route every single time.

The first generation had some of the ugliest pokemon if you think about it.
