So... a reboot would mean they're going to tie this one into the current movie universe like the other Marvel movies, right? Right?

Because that would be awesome.

Still, topping the first two Spider-Man movies is going to be tough. I'd love to see it happen, but I don't think it will.
They need to set up Spiderman for the Avengers. Atleast another movie was going to be needed to explain, because I believe Spider-Man was one of the more contributing members of the Avengers. I just hope the villans and plot hold up. I miss smart-mouth Spider-Man. Toby MacGuire made him a punky little emo child...

Does anyone else see the irony that the person directing the new Spider-man movie is called "Webb"??

I suppose a reboot is the only way to salvage after the third movie. Unless they go all Superman Returns and pretend it didn't happen.

I'm actually kind of torn. While I would like to see another good Spider-man movie, I would also like it to fail and Columbia give up on their rights to ol' Web-head so Marvel can use him in the contiguous universe they're building.

Yeah I beat Marvel are begining to regret giving away the rights to Spidey and the X-Men. I seriously hoping for Spider-Man to join the Avengers at some point.

Cool peter parker.....sorry I'm not sure I'm on board with that

So it now only takes a few years for a movie to require a reboot? I seriously hope this doesn't become a trend, there's been very few interesting things released at the flicks recently.

I didn't think the first three Spidey movies were that bad. Sam Raimi's directing was great and Toby MacGuire did great in the role of Peter Parker. The problem is that the movies got progressively worse writing to the point Raimi and MacGuire couldn't salvage the train wreck that was the majority of Spider-Man 3.
The reson for the reboot is the falling apart of Raimi's work on the project, which came from WB insisting on a Venom Plot when all raimi wanted was to giv ethe sandman some screen time which is why it felt so confused and poor (think emo peter was sort of Raimi getting back at the studio)

The hiring of a relative unknown speaks more to budget, I fear, than acting ability. Why pay for a big-name actor when you don't have to? People will go see this no matter who you put in the lead role, so there's no need to cast a known star.

That's never going to happen as long as Sony still holds the rights.

I'm going to miss good old Tobey, but I'll give this guy a chance.
Every time you think about Tobey, think about his dance in Spider-Man 3. And then shudder, don't worry, we all shudder at that mental image that was imprinted in everyone who watched the movie.

Yeah, but topping the third one really, really won't.
Oh come on, it wasn't that...

*emo Peter Parker flashback*
Oddly enough, I took the dancing bit as goofy humor and the sort of thing I'd expect a nerd (like myself) to do when finally letting go of a bunch of stress. However, the emo hair, that was the damaging part for me. That just didn't make sense. The dancing actually did. /shot

They're having money problems? Hey, I'll take that as something positive. Maybe now they'll be forced to tell a cohesive story. Spider-man 3 was such a mess that it'll be hard to do worse (aggressive attitude = emo haircut?(???), incoherent story progression, Sandman and Venom horribly miscast, terrible script). However, I think there's a decent chance they'll improve on the original concept and make a more stable franchise.

I'm personally not very interested in an Avengers movie for the same reason I'm not really interested in another X-men movie. There are too many characters. Movies are not comics, you can't have the same type of character development in a movie as you can in a comic because it takes too long. Thus all we'll get is a bunch of special effects spliced together.

And to be honest, that's mostly what I remember from the Avengers in comics too so hopes are not high.

As much as I want another good Spidey movie, I hope it bombs horribly. Thataway Marvel can get 'im back for their massive continuity they've established in their movies.

Why are they doing this? There's no point in watching the first movie of the new series because it'll just be the same as the first movie of the old series.

Nope, the rights to make a Spider-Man movie are owned by Sony. They can't combine until Sony loses those rights, and they keep the rights as long as the roll out more movies (the X-Men have the same kind of contract at Fox) which basically means we have to wait until they make "40000 reboot prequels first."

Some times the unknown face is for the best, since it is much easier to immerse yourself in the movie when you don't get the niggling reminder "that is Morgan Freeman" or "that is Clint Eastwood" when such big names are on the screen, so if you don't know the actor, the only thought can be "that is spider man."

Of course, as long as the kid is a good actor.

As long as the black substance does not turn him into a dancing fool I am fine with it. I still won't go to theaters to see out of respect to Sam Raimi's work.

Marvel doesn't own the Movie rights to spider-man or X-Men so no tie-in continuity for them.
