I actually noticed that when I bought Left 4 Dead 2. I just passed it off as a slight change, it didn't look that significant.

So lets get right down to the important stuff. How are the tabs? Do they make you feel like you are going to snap the disc every time you pull it out?

Im not surprised they hit Microsoft first. The amount of plastic they use for a Microsoft Points box is stupid. I mean at least a PSN points box you can use as a spare box when you step on another, but a 360 points box is shaped to fit and only fit a credit card sized bit of paper!

Actually, the holes in the case are just behind where the disc is held, we should be able to simply slip a finger in 'round the back (stop sniggering) and push it out. Since we'll be putting the force on the disc right next to the tabs (instead of pulling at the edges like we normally do) it should be easier than ever.

So while this new packaging doesn't reduce the cost of the game, it's helping to prevent the cost from increasing, makes the cases lighter and easier to remove the discs from, and reduces the amount of CO2 produced by game production. Call me an optimist, but I can't really see a downside to this.

This is good. Gaming companies always get bad scores when rated by green watchdog groups, so this is a step in the right direction.

soon, we will not have cases, just DLC for all games, and then, who will care.
Oh god I hope not... I like hard copies...
Same, i especially like the box art and the cool stuff that occasionally comes with it. :)

I'm so eco friendly I saved the whales, just don't tell Neonbob.
He won't find out unless we quote you an excessive amount of times.

He'll never see it coming..

Huh, and I thought they were ventilation holes. . .

Not really, this is a great idea and hopefully it takes off. Likely somebody will try to charge more for "green packaging", but they'll just fall victim to the supply cycle (unless they're BioWare or Activision. They lace their games with addicting agents).

And, was that a Corner Gas reference tacked onto the end, or is it from something even earlier.

I wonder why they don't use compressed rice cellulose, then after you put your game in it's wallet you can eat the packaging!
Awesome idea... sort of. What about all the touching that gets done to your game package as it's being shipped and shelved?

What if they just resort to the old ays, when they were like audio CD cases?

They worked just fine!
Yeah, Jewel Cases FTW!

And put the manual IN the game and just have a small manual to cover issues that could cause the game not to play. Seriously, I don't have a lot of space in my room for all the games I want.

It really freaking annoys me that they try so desperately to reduce the amount of plastic used yet still keep it as large. I actually remember to good-old-bad-old-days when PC games came in a ridiculously oversized box, now PC games often don't come in anything at all, just an online transaction and streaming download.
