Well as a gamer and programmer, I guess I'm doomed no matter what I do. Not sure if I should be depressed or just get a snack.

Well, that's unsettling. I spend at least 8 hours a day on the computer doing a mixture of gaming and working.

Though, it's worth remembering that while saying "twice as likely" sounds like a lot, if it's 2x 0.02%, then it's hardly worth worrying about.
That was my first thought as well. What exactly is the base statistic?

Also, what about kids at school? If sitting down is so bad, why do we all have to do it for roughly 8 hours every day from 4/5 years old all the way to 18/19?

Christ on a bike.
Also this.
The good thing is: if you got a desk job, whatever else you don't do, won't matter anymore apparently.
Damnit.

I work a desk job. 8 hours in front of a computer.

Guess I better buy one of these:

Lol. My captcha was Toyota Care and I drive one and had a flat tire today. IRONY!
Nope. Still sitting.
Needs a bed and a low table to live longer.

But come on, if you're going to do a study of Scottish men the results are going to be dire anyway.

4,512 people really isnt a large enough pool to draw any conclusions from. I do about an hour of aerobic exercise a day and weight training 5 or 6 days a week. Been doing this for a year now and I can say without a doubt I am far healthier today than I was before I started, and yet I manage to squeeze in 8 or 9 hours (in blocks of 4 hours or so) of video gaming a day.

Maybe they need to rethink their methodology.

It's getting to be all purple and veiny... (TMI, I know)

OK, how about this? How many of you who work out do so standing up? Don't you use machines or lie down to lift the heavier weights? That would also cause the problems described in this article. Of course, this is a statistic, and flawed by its very design... but that doesn't mean there isn't some truth to it. My guess is that those same people who were the worst offenders, also have bad eating habits. I still haven't seen a proven link between sitting all day and heart problems, but it makes you think... doesn't it?

Sounds like the solution is to stand. Does anybody know of any "seats" that help maintain a standing position?

Grass grows, birds fly, sun shines, and brudda, I exercise.

OT: I've always wanted to try hooking up one of those generators powered by the stationary bikes up to the television. You have to exercise to watch or play anything.

...yea, doing a study with the Scottish really only shows the worst case scenario. If I'm not mistaken, Scotland has the worse levels of obesity in the UK.

NEWS FLASH! Gaming 4 or more hours increases your chances of being hit by a meteorite or being eaten by a bengalese tiger by 50%!
Holy crap.

The study showed that it didn't matter if the men said they exercised several times a week; the statistics were unaffected.
Okay, it's official. Exercising does absolutely nothing for me. Now I can sit on my butt and play games ALL DAY.

Life's short. If I have to die of a heart attack I'd rather it be doing what I love than running/working out trying to work it off. Not to say I won't stop working out all together mind, but I'm not going to cut back on my gaming either.

It seems a bit odd really, and it's not a very good thing for them to say.

"If you sit down playing games all day then you will have negative affects regardless of whether you exercise/work out or not".

It's more likely to make people give up their gym memberships than their gaming habits.
Yeah, as this would miss the audience they wanted to scare away from the PC screen (gamers) and just pretty much make anyone with a 9-5 job that involves a computer give up.

I chalk it up to the average scare tactic for people to get their biased opinion heard louder. Since I left the Navy I try my best to get 3 days of two hour works out in and it has certain kept me fairly healthy.

... What are these Scotsmen eating? And what about reading? You don't do that standing up. All those academics must be keeling over all over the shop.
