Christ on a bike.
Also this.
The good thing is: if you got a desk job, whatever else you don't do, won't matter anymore apparently.
Damnit.

I work a desk job. 8 hours in front of a computer.

Guess I better buy one of these:

Lol. My captcha was Toyota Care and I drive one and had a flat tire today. IRONY!
LOL. That desk is awesome.

Though a mouse would be a problem.

If this is actual news anywhere anymore then the people getting it must be living under a rock in a cave in an asteroid waaay out in the bloody Kupiter Belt.

On a side note I care very little for my personal well bieng, as long as I can still do what I need to do. Namely walking bieng the most exerting thing.
I don't think you read the article properly... Sitting and playing games for extended periods of time can't be properly counterbalanced with exercise. THAT'S a bit disconcerting.

Exactly my thoughts. But so we are screwed no matter what we do, I declare this bull'. Where is the line where 30 minutes of exercise per day can go a loooong way? This is becomin messed up!
I concur as it seems practically defeatist because, as others have stated:
EVERY. BLOODY. THING. WILL. KILL. YOU.
[sub]And have a good day![/sub]

Everything in moderation, sitting versus activity included. Quite frankly, you have to sit. I do a lot of sitting/standing-->walking/sitting along with a heavy sum of exercise and after a long day on my feet, I can barely get up the stairs!

There are simply so many variables at play that it becomes absurd to overthink these things or your head will likely implode. But if it is such a crucial matter, then why does the education system basically imprison developing children and teenagers (and eventually all kinds of people in Colleges/Universities) in this sedentary death-state? And that 7 page essay? I doubt that miserable assignment will type itself, so one must sit back down again for countless hours. Now I'm curious if this in turn causes a rise in the desire to kill oneself just to expedite the damn process...

I also found the quote "-Sitting slows down the body's ability to break down lipids-" rather interesting as it sounds more like "Yeah, basically your metabolism is overall slower when your sitting down rather than lifting the back end of a Volkswagen." Who would have thought that metabolisms also cover fat macronutrients, hee hee...

The study showed that it didn't matter if the men said they exercised several times a week; the statistics were unaffected.
Okay, it's official. Exercising does absolutely nothing for me. Now I can sit on my butt and play games ALL DAY.
lol at least im not the only person to think that after reading this

This is a completely asinine study where as just about everyone with a desk job falls under this category. Its completely unavoidable. Did they take into account that ppl who dont spend more than 2 hours a day sitting in front of a computer/TV probably accounts for a nearly insignificant percentage of the population in Cities?

Not everyone can be Amish you know <.<

They may have a point, but I'm waiting the next study to refute these claims, then the one after that to make them again, etc.

Fuck that, everybody sits more than 6 hours a day, fucking everybody in front of computer or not sitting is sitting. People sit in car, in most jobs, they sit when eat, when read, mostly everything.

And I also think this is a bullshit.

So science has told now us that being sedentary for large portions of our waking lives is bad. And the more sedentary we are, the worse it is. Umm....yeah? Duh? Not that having hard evidence is bad, it just seems like a common sense thing. The amount of gamers with bad backs we all know should have attested to that.

It seems a bit odd really, and it's not a very good thing for them to say.

"If you sit down playing games all day then you will have negative affects regardless of whether you exercise/work out or not".

It's more likely to make people give up their gym memberships than their gaming habits.
Also, that can't be true, there has to be some mistake in either test bias or lying participants, because I can't believe for a second that weekly exercise doesn't help AT ALL as far as this goes.

According to this study I should be dead. Maybe I'm undead. This study doesn't seem very accurate. How do thy know that people who spend 4 hours in front of TV or PC are 50% more likely to die of any cause? Did 50% of their test subjects die? I don't think so.
Well, maybe by spending 8 hours on a computer, you'd be dead from lack of a life.

Another point that the study doesn't address: Those who already have health conditions (Obesity, frailty due to old age, etc.) are often more likely to remain highly sedentary in addition to being at increased risk to the negative effects mentioned by the study; things like that can skew the results.

(Remember: correlation does not imply causation.)

150% probability of death? Urk!
What i find funnier is that it's for any cause. "Dear lord, there's now a higher chance of me dying by simply breathing!"

OT: Guess we're all kinda screwed now eh? Ah well, way I see it, none of us are getting out of this alive anyways :p

I would love to go outside and stuff. Thing is, though, it's like really, really cold outside, like below 40 (thats below 5 for you celsius people) And i'm from the south i'm used to comfy warm... like you know 80 (25). And there isn't even snow out there D:! so until mother nature decides to turn on the heat i'm going to sit in front of a screen and blame her for my heart problems.

In all honesty, I'm not sure what I loved more - the article, or the comments in this thread.

This is why I love the Escapist - clever people saying clever things, not just relentlessly trolling everyone...

But on topic - I already knew I was doomed before reading this article, but I'm doomed for entirely different reasons - like the time I stayed up for five days straight with my friend just so we could say we did.
