I don't think it will be that confusing. If it's dumping him in a different country anyway and if pretty much everyone from the last movie is dead anyway, why should they bother referencing it.

I might be alone in this, but I say ditch Hugh Jackman and make Wolverine old and hunched again as we knew him before the movies.

Given how profoundly they let Ratner ruin the main franchise with X3, how bad Wolverine was and how promising First Class sounds, this is probably the best thing for all involved. Given that Fox is only still making "X-Men" movies to prevent Marvel from reclaiming the rights (even if they lose money, no studio employee wants to be "the one who let it get away" if Marvel snatches it back and makes a billion off of "Avengers versus X-Men" or whatever) and Jackman needs to keep playing Wolverine because he hasn't found any financially-stable success outside the character; might as well just drop the linkage and make the best movies possible.

Film-to-film continuity only works when you've got a PLAN for it, like Marvel Studios does with their current slate. It's not something you should do when your in as unstable a situation as Fox is in these days.

So can we all pretend that Deadpool never existed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and that X3 never happened?

And wait. I didn't know First Class was going to be a different continuity. That's dumb. Marvel needs to figure out some way to reclaim its rights to X-Men and Spider-Man movies.
I know at least marvel tried to keep continuity hiccups down

The movies are not even trying
This^. Well said. All these reboots are getting very, very annoying. Especially because there are so many super heroes who need their own damn movie. I want an Iron Fist movie, for crying out loud!

I'm not bothered about this. The canonicity/continuity of the series isn't a factor for me as I have no strong knowledge of the comics at all. I trust Darren Aronofsky to make a good film. He normally does.

I hope there is no silver samurai - that character is lame.
How about a Steel Samurai?

I love you.

OT: Honestly, I'm not that surprised. Most of the movies were kind of meh.

Could Michaelangelo make a good sculpture if all he had was a giant block of shit?
Lets see if Aronofsky can pull this off.

Marvel can't make up their mind about comics, Fox can't make up their mind about film adaptation of those comics, only half-decent x-men game was game adaptation of movie adaptation of a non existing comic. Sheesh these people rly don't know what to do with their free time....even Wolverine does less butchering.

Well, this news surprises approximately no one. Seriously, what the fuck is so damn fascinating about Wolverine that he gets so much more screen attention than any mutant with a legitimately interesting backstory?

Well, at least Marvel are now starting to make a move into attempting to keep a consistent continuity for each film now. Personally, I see anything that exists and is marketed as a series outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe as canon to their own alternate continuity (I can just pretend it all happens on a different Earth from the comics or something), then that allows directors like Aronofsky to do what they do without any hiccups, and allows things like the Spiderman reboot while still enjoying the other films too. Then, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all of that will be canon and crossed over anyway under Marvel's own guiding hand, which means for things like The Avengers and Iron Man and Hulk, it all works out without being confusing (well, as simple as Marvel can make things, given they have years and years of continuity muddled up and whatnot anyway...).

That's the simplest way I can arrange things in my head, though to be fair I have considerable experience at keeping twisted plotlines straight in my mind. I stuck with Heroes to the end, and Lost through all six seasons, after all...

Well, from a cursory glance at the comics over the years, it seems like having 9 different x-men continuities seems to make a lot of sense.

Wolverine is starting to get boring. Let's give the other characters to develop and shine eh? Deadpool should be the first one this happens to.
