So it will be a reboot with the same actors? Or just a different timeline? A different universe?

Man, the Mavel comic book multiverse is less confusing then this.

Oh my god, why do nerds rage about continuity when it's about movie? When the comics themselves do different universes, story lines, and reboots for the comics I don't hear any raging. How many times has each X-man died in the comics? Jean Grey's done it more than 20 times.

I'm just more interested by the fact that it's being made by Darren Aronofsky. No matter what you think about his movies, you have to admit that he just directs the absolute living shit out of every movie he makes. I'm interested to see what he'll do with a comic book franchise, seeing how he always confounds my expectations by making movies about stuff I don't give a shit about mathematics (Pi), professional wrestling (The Wrestler), ballet (The upcoming Black Swan), and now Wolverine, and I'm not even really into X-Men.

Here's to hoping for a good movie.

Well, to hell with continuity. With Aronofsky directing, it'll sure be unique, at least, even if somehow it ends not being good. The Wrestler is very good, though somewhat slow-paced. It certainly will be "thought-provoking".

This explains why I can't get into comics. There is just so much bullshit surrounding them that I can never figure out what the fuck is going on, who all these characters are, and what is really happening. How the hell can you kill the same character multiple times in what is supposedly the same continuity and expect it to all make sense?!?

I've never heard of this Director or Writer, but when the bar is set so low, you could only get better.
I won't be surprised if this movie has only one or two other mutants from the comics, and not the terrible smorgasbord of cameos in the terrible Wolverine Origins movie.
At least it appears that Fox is at least trying to make decent x-men movies now. I wonder if Marvel sent them some nasty phone calls after the previous film.

Darren Aronofsky is doing an X-men movie?

Yeah, ok, I will totally bite that it will be "thought-provoking", though I'm visibly shuddering at the kinds of thoughts that will be pervading my nightmares when I see it.

So can we all pretend that Deadpool never existed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and that X3 never happened?

And wait. I didn't know First Class was going to be a different continuity. That's dumb. Marvel needs to figure out some way to reclaim its rights to X-Men and Spider-Man movies.
I know at least marvel tried to keep continuity hiccups down

The movies are not even trying
Well, at least Marvel are now starting to make a move into attempting to keep a consistent continuity for each film now. Personally, I see anything that exists and is marketed as a series outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe as canon to their own alternate continuity (I can just pretend it all happens on a different Earth from the comics or something), then that allows directors like Aronofsky to do what they do without any hiccups, and allows things like the Spiderman reboot while still enjoying the other films too. Then, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all of that will be canon and crossed over anyway under Marvel's own guiding hand, which means for things like The Avengers and Iron Man and Hulk, it all works out without being confusing (well, as simple as Marvel can make things, given they have years and years of continuity muddled up and whatnot anyway...).
i don't mind them mixing up the story from the commics/tv.(prefer new things over just seeing the same thing over and over)

however they cant keep the continuity within there own movies(the first 4 moves i mean not this one i do like the idea of them starting over)

They reset the comics every few years. I mean how many times can you have Magneto bust some shit up without Xavier just putting him in a mentally stunted state. Reboots have to happen or your favorite characters become stale.

I don't honestly care about comics or the X men, but if they're going to be shoving another movie into theaters, could they at least try something different? I don't get the infatuation with Hugh Jackman and Wolverine after so many of these X men movies. As a moviegoer I would much rather see a unique direction or at least a different actor so that it at least is feasible as a reboot over further beating the franchise into the ground after mashing it to a pulp. Forgetting the past is a good direction, but if it weren't for hearing this news, I believe many like myself would just see The Wolverine as more of the same in a desperate attempt at reviving interest.

Y'know, it's hard to have a thought-provoking movie when the main character can basically punch his way out of every situation because of some regeneration ability and super-metal bones that he has.

OT: That's probably for the best. Even trying to fill in the plot-holes that the other movies left would be time-wasting and un-enjoyable to the viewer.

Not surprised this happened.

Outside of the action the last movie was crap, hell even the action was rather 'meh'.

Awesome. The whole "Wolverine goes to Japan" thing was totally sweet in the comics. I hope they have Silver Samurai and stuff.

And X3 was retarded, and the Wolverine Origins movie was such a giant bucket of crap. If you disagree, you're not a real comics fan. Now I'm not saying that not being a real comics fan is a bad thing, I'm just saying that a lot of people have spent a lot of money on comics and assorted memorabilia over the years, giving Marvel Entertainment all of the money on which they have built their vast empire, and Wolverine Origins just completely let those people down.

And I also never understood why comic book movies find it necessary to screw with the stories on purpose, when the source material is so awesome. That's why Spiderman 3 and Batman 3 and 4 completely blow.

"The Wolverine will tell the story of Logan's adventures in Japan and his illicit love affair with a Japanese woman."

*Please read this with a wry tone. I am a white guy. I live in Japan. I'm speaking about tired story tropes here. Not making a racial comment*

Great. And it always has to be an "illicit" affair, doesn't it. When the white man goes to Asia, he can't keep his hands off the married and unavailable women (Cue generic Asian string music with exotic keyboard washes. Slow motion love making by firelight in front of sliding paper doors. Zen garden outside). And of course, they themselves can't keep their hands off him. And everybody will tutt tutt tutt and there'll be anger (talk of honour of all types, and certainly a philosophical and spiritual awakings will occur for all, but most importantly for HIM), but it's foolish to resist, the world is his to exploit, and of course, SAVE. I'm certain the thought provoking aspect will be where the he observes the things in a way only an outsider could, thus saving the locals from dire circumstances ("Oh if it wasn't for you, we would've destroyed ourselves!").

It isn't as if we haven't seen this story a million times already. I'm keen for a new Wolverine film, especially from this director, but this plot of "adventures" in Japan and "illicit love" sounds like pure post-colonial White Man's burden all over again. We've seen it, over and over again. Sure, it was in the comics already, but the idea is old and frankly, transparent. Perhaps I'm just getting terrible flashbacks of 70s and 80s movies I grew up with, but this story trope is one that I'd love to see mothballed for a while. A long while.

Throw continuity out the window for the next Wolverine movie? I say about fucking time someone made this bold move.

What hindered X-Men Origins: Wolverine is that they felt like they needed to include as many characters from the comic books as possible. This led to a confusingly fuddled mess.

Good. The further we can distance ourselves from Wolverine: Origin of Shit the better. Seriously, guys? There is nowhere to go but up.

How about a Steel Samurai?

Lol that's exactly what I thought of when I saw that comment. That link should start playing the steel samurai theme too.

Why don't they forget about Wolverine for a while and make a Gambit movie instead?

Or actually finish the Avengers movie?

Hell, I'd settle for a movie about Angel at this point. Anybody except Wolverine.
