Nickelback's ok, but I don't think Guitar Hero will be the death of rock. Music in general has suffered recently: garage bands are lots rarer than they used to be.

Maybe the reason that Nickelback can't find anyone to tour with is because they are terrible and nobody wants to be affiliated with them...

Just a thought...

Guitar Hero [http://www.nickelback.com] and learn how to play a real instrument instead.

In an Dark Horse [http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1599652/20081118/nickelback.jhtml], Kroeger expressed concern over the shrinking number of bands in the rock and roll business. "I feel like there's not enough rock bands out there, especially when we go on the road," he said. "It's tough to find other bands out there, because either they're making a record, or they just got done touring."

The solution, in Kroeger's eyes, is to encourage people to spend less time pretending to be musicians and more time actually becoming one. "Kids: Start rock bands," he continued. "Set down the Guitar Hero, learn how to play an actual guitar and start a band, because it's hard to find more bands to put a solid rock-and-roll package together, to get out there."

He's doubtlessly overstating things a bit, but I think Kroeger may be on to something. It's hard to imagine that the massive popularity of games like Guitar Hero and WRC [http://www.rockband.com] driver. On the other hand, it could easily be argued that Guitar Hero exposes a new generation of fans to music they might otherwise miss out on, very possibly inspiring them to genuine musical accomplishment. It really comes down to a question of what the game is supplanting: Listening to music, or playing it.

Which is it?

He says "start a band" like it's something easy.

I think Chad Kroeger should stop pretending to be a rock star and focus on producing less generic music. At least then there wouldn't be irony in him telling people to learn how to play guitar.

All Nickelback-hating aside (and I do hate Nickelback), I don't feel he has any sort of point here whatsoever. Nobody who is talented and interested in guitar will substitute it with Guitar Hero. Instead, as Malygris already mentioned, the likelihood of the player being exposed to new, interesting sorts of music shouldn't be left out of the equation.

Back to hating Nickelback; maybe they can't find bands to tour with because nobody likes them?

If Nickelback wants us to stop playing Guitar Hero, then why is one of there songs GH:WT DLC?
The glory of capitalism, my friend. Criticize something as long as it doesn't bring you money. Alternatively, you can criticize something while receiving money under the table. As long as you milk the cash cow for every last drop, your morals can suffer.

not sure if anyone posted on the irony of nb having a song in one such game kinda makes me chuckle a bit also as a drummer ghwt and metallica have really helped my pacing and timing on the drums ... so in closing rock band/gh series not a complete waste of time but very addictive

Sorry, but why has there been so much Nickelback flaming here? Even some of the staff and mods have started, which presumably means there'll be no banhammer on this thread for anyone saying Nickelback are shit (not a dig at the staff or the mods, but they aren't going to let themselves be called hypocrites, are they?). I have no problem with people not liking them, but they can at least keep it to themselves. I actually like them and so do many people, including plenty on The Escapist, so I'm glad to see a few people have actually put their opinions on Nickelback as a side note and focussed on talking about the news article in question instead. Sadly this is only the minority, when most people have simply come here to say 'Nickelback are shit, hur hur hur' and so on. Please, guys, actually contribute to the discussion instead of flaming, okay?

As for the actual topic, I have to say that they are right in some ways, that there is a lack of bands now. I say this not because there's an actual shortage, as such, but there's such a huge range and diversity of music now so there are in each genre relatively few artists and bands compared to previously, and there are relatively few new bands. I suppose this is diminished somewhat with the latest surge of indie, but it's still a problem, and no doubt people actually in the industry can see this more than we on the outside. As it happens, my brother plays Guitar Hero a lot, as do his friends. He also happens to be an extremely talented guitarist and also quite good at the keyboard (just a shame he can't sing, but his friend can so that's alright). He wants to start a band himself, for the record.

However, it is true that many people who play things like Rock Band and Guitar Hero will have little or no talent at actual instruments. This doesn't mean they shouldn't try. Have a go, if you turn out crap then fair enough, don't pursue that and move onto something else, or don't learn an instrument after all. But give it a try anyway, and who knows, you may be pretty damn good. Nickelback have a point when they say that people should play more instruments and give it a go. Where's the harm in trying, after all?

I play several instruments and Guitar Hero. Nickelback is an alright band I guess, but I am in complete disagreement. It's just a video game; people play it for fun. Rock Band/Guitar Hero are just something to do when you are bored with a group of friends. You play along to some great songs (depending lol) on some fake instruments, what's the harm in that? It's like saying people who play CoD should go join the military. Play GH if you want, ***** about it if you want, waste your time the way you want to waste it. :p

i also think that guitar hero is a commercial product with no intent on helping kids play music or any of the like. its just like a 21st century kareoke machine.

People don't refuse to learn to play guitar because they can play Guitar Hero instead. They refuse to learn Guitar because playing guitar is hard.

However, I'm sure there's a few people who were inspired to play Guitar after playing Guitar Hero. And then, there's a few more people who have come to appreciate the Guitar a little better because of Guitar hero. If you actually want more people playing instruments, improve school funding. Guitar hero is almost irrelevant, and the tiny bit of relevancy it does posses is positive.
