THey dont make hardcore games.

Look where nintendo is now, top sellers.

So.. is it a problem? I dont think so.
Not for them it isn't.

I'm sure a few gamers might have a problem with it.
No fanboy crybabies will have a problem with it. The mature gamer realizes the market is big enough to sustain both. Just like it always has.

Hardcore, such a loose term.

just because you drop an M rating on a game doesn't mean hardcore. a Hardcore game is any game that caters to a specific demographic (like PC Gamers.) that cares nothing about mainstream appeal.

Look, i don't get what the problem is Nintendo, the gameplay in the main Metroid, Mario and Zelda games are pitch perfect, plus they really only appeal to Nintendo fans and maybe some kids that have real brains (thus very Hardcore.) throwing in that M rating changes nothing.
just focus on what you got (because what ya got is great.) and do your best to cater to your original fanbase... and don't do stupid crap like Discontinuing games that prove popular with the fans just because of sales. you have so much money, wouldn't kill to try to get your rep up with the people who put you where you are now.

Wii is never going to be a big Mainstream console (which is what you have confused for Hardcore.) but it's lovely for Casual games for nongamers, and for Hardcore fans (if you would only show us some more love then you are right now, really. bring back Metroid Prime Trilogy.) i don't see how that would be a big problem.

I don't think Nintendo have ever developed a game we could now call "Hardcore".

Published, yes (of course!) but never developed.

Thank God for that! I was wondering when we could start generalizing en masse again.

That's a stupid saying. What else am I supposed to do with a cake?

Nintendo have always been the casual, lighterhearted gaming company. They created Zelda OoT and the Pokemon series, 2 things I would be lost without. And without my N64 I wouldn't even be a gamer today. I've always owned some form of Nintendo portable, because I find that they do it the best. PSP are big budget, hardcore games on a tiny screen, and just aren't suited to travel, whereas Pokemon was a pick and up and play for 5 minutes kind of game that meant that it was actually fun to play on a journey somewhere.

I know that when I want something fun to do that won't take much time to get into and won't bog me down from whatever else I was/should be doing, I can always turn to my Nintendo games for a bit of quick fun.

When I want to sit down and get really involved in a big game, I turn to Xbox and, usually, Oblivion.

If Nintendo started to blur these lines too much I'd be horribly confused. Black would be south, Up would be a desk and my door would begin to talk. The world order of gaming is pretty well set out right now and it works smoothly. PCs have their super in depth RPGs like the Witcher, the Xbox and PS3 have simple shooters and fun RPGs, and Nintendo does quick, fun games that are lighthearted and easy to get into.

It's a metaphor. Try not to take things so literally.

Why should Nintendo do hardcore games or be good at making them? They haave made theor fortunes on what they have.

Are Infinity Ward any good at making games about love and cute puppies? No.
Are Bungie any good at making games about skateboarders on a normal everday planet? No.

It doesn't matter becasue they are good/ok at what they do.

He definitely seems to be missing the point. Keep making things aimed at kids, not try to make things more edgy. But also make things that aren't pointless mini games like wii music and wii fit. Last year had nothing to get exited about, like at all, but at least this year they have other M, Galaxy 2, and golden sun 3, and thats enough to satisfy me, but latly nintendo doesn't seem to under stand what it's old fans want. This statement is kind of prof.

Yeah it's a real big shame they're bad at making games for people who had to invent demeaning labels just to feel good about themselves.

Well no it really isn't a shame because they're kicking ass without it.

EDIT: Also, since when in the blue hell is Metroid not hardcore? this is exactly the kind of problem I have with that stupid label.
lets not start the hardcore argument please (because its not difficult I guess?)

Does no one remember "Geist"? It was a game developed by Nintendo for the Gamecube in order to appeal to a more mature audience. It didn't do so well. It had an interesting premise though. The idea was you are a ghost who must scare your victims on a military base in order to possess them in order to infiltrate stop some evil plot army plot. I can't remember much else but it failed to wow critics and gamers alike.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geist_%28video_game%29

Edit: It was published by Nintendo not developed.
CORRECTION: Geist was developed by n-Space. Nintendo only published the game. It even says so on the page.

OT: It's kind of nice to see Nintendo is self aware. I have nothing against the company going with whats profitable. They're a business and can do what they damn well please, even if their games end up being shit.

What nonsense. The terms "Hardcore" and "Casual" are completely arbitrary designations that ultimately mean nothing. What defines a so-called "hardcore" game? One that the ESRB has rated 'M'? Or is it one that takes 1001 hours to finish? If it's the latter then there are very few "hardcore" games around these days. I hate these terms and I choke every time I'm forced to say them.

Hey, I heard you're going to release a game this year, maybe a new Zelda, or maybe Mario, yeah, Mario's always fun, do you think that kite will fly?
Damn you Reggie, you and your tricks!

Now if they can admit they're bad at games, full stop, then I'll be happy. Wait, they can't say that even, because they don't release any games. So, they have no games to demonstrate their ineptitude in making games... which is worse...

I might have to drag the dust-covered, mildewed remains of my Wii out from the closet to play Mario Galaxy 2.

Before someone says ninty dont make hardcore games, go beat NSMB without dying. Then Super metroid. THEN say they're casual games.
Can't? ok then.
I haven't beaten any game without dying. Your point?
