I disagree with your definition of hardcore. Trying to say that Bioshock 2 is hardcore but Super Mario is not is just incorrect in my opinion. Because I can tell you right now, Bioshock 2 is a CAKEWALK. There is never any point in that game when you ever really feel challenged or feel like you're in danger, whereas a game like Mario 3 is very challenging and difficult pretty much all the way through. Mario may be lighthearted, but that doesn't make it casual by any means. According to your definition, if the gameplay was entirely unchanged, but Goombas were crushed in an explosion of blood every time you jumped on them, Mario would be hardcore.
I have a friend who only plays shooters, and he says that he doesn't like Nintendo's games because they're not hardcore enough and they don't take themselves seriously, but I can guarantee you that if I ever convinced him to play Super Mario Bros., that game would wipe the floor with him.
