Nintendo Admits to Being Bad at Hardcore Games

I disagree with your definition of hardcore. Trying to say that Bioshock 2 is hardcore but Super Mario is not is just incorrect in my opinion. Because I can tell you right now, Bioshock 2 is a CAKEWALK. There is never any point in that game when you ever really feel challenged or feel like you're in danger, whereas a game like Mario 3 is very challenging and difficult pretty much all the way through. Mario may be lighthearted, but that doesn't make it casual by any means. According to your definition, if the gameplay was entirely unchanged, but Goombas were crushed in an explosion of blood every time you jumped on them, Mario would be hardcore.

I have a friend who only plays shooters, and he says that he doesn't like Nintendo's games because they're not hardcore enough and they don't take themselves seriously, but I can guarantee you that if I ever convinced him to play Super Mario Bros., that game would wipe the floor with him.

the most recent game i have enjoyed is saits row 2 nad that was despite most of its 'modern' elements

the obsession with brown and grey shooters with RPG elements is crippling they are all similar in multilayer of modern games i sometimes forget what game i'm playing Halo and COD4 pretty much aced the formula everything is els is incremental changes and its annoying.

When was the last truly great new idea probably portal hell i even give EA credit ofr spore sure it failed but it was crippled by bad practices (secure rom, expansions galore)

so i will pick up cod 4 and MW2 at some point and keep buying valve stuff but nothing els interests me its all samey even Nintendo are falling into this (though other M looks promising)their last great new IP was pikmin.

My bigest gripe is the death of the space sim genre

For innovation look to mods and indies there are more ideas in the HL2 mod scene alone than the entire commercial market (FPS in both cases)

Before someone says ninty dont make hardcore games, go beat NSMB without dying. Then Super metroid. THEN say they're casual games.
Can't? ok then.
Yeah I don't get this. Of course all the Mario, Metroid, Zelda, etc. games are hardcore. I think this casual and hardcore labeling is just getting too confusing now, it needs to die.

My problem with Nintendo is they haven't produced the really great quality system and games they used to.

Make a Chrono Trigger sequel on the Wii and I will forgive you.

Actually, I rather like mario/metroid/zelda/kirby, so you don't really need to seek forgiveness.
Nintendo makes 'hardcore' games, but in the end the labels are all relative. Some people find Puzzlequest hardcore, while others will be satisfied with nothing under perfection. The problem is not a lack of 'hardcore' games but a lack of quality games. I don't want mini-game collections, I don't want a stream of almost light gun games (the ones you play once at an arcade, beat in ten minutes, and then move on), I want new quality games. Make a new franchise, or reinvent an old one, remakes are almost as bad (I beat this game ten years ago, and now I have to pay fifty bucks to do it again?).
But I still want more chrono trigger. Now.

Is he saying that a game has to be rated 'M' to be hardcore?

That's nonsense, obviously. A hardcore game is a game sought after by a hardcore gamer. A hardcore gamer is one whose interest in gaming far exceeds that which would be deemed average.

But what do I know? I've barely even played my copy of BioShock.

you sir, are NOT hardcore! *doesn't like FPS not named Duke Nukem or Painkiller*

*goes back to playing Rogue Galaxy*

First I want to congratulate Nintendo for FINILY admitting this; of course this is like a(an) alcoholic telling you that he/she is not drunk when you are both at a bar,at 1:00pm,Its now 8:00pm, and there is enough empty glass bottles at/around your table that you could make a stain glass window.
So lets give Nin?ten...do a @#$#en medal for all there??what ever.
Now that?s out of the way, I agree with Woodsey some gamers might have a problem with that
(I know I do). I don?t know if I?m a hardcore gamer, but I?m getting a little deterred from anything Nintendo. It?s like what Yahtzee say's a in his Left-4-Dead-2 and New-Super-Mario-Bros-Wii video (from 2:52 on), ?WHAT REALLY HAS BEEN THE POINT OF THE LAST 15 YEARS IF YOUR GOING TO MAKE MARIO 3 AGAIN COMPLETE WITH CHERPY NEW SOUND EFFECTS STILL INTACT,IN WHAT IS SOUPOSALLY A NEXT-GEN CONCEL NO LESS?

P.s...Can someone tell me how to properly add this video to my post please(keep in mind I'm not a moron,I just don't breath, eat, and dream of this stuff.

People who measure their coolness by the matureness of their games are not gamers.

Zelda is hardcore enough for me.

Okay Nintendo. Here's my plan for you. Lose the motion controls, ditch the pretense that you're an excercise company (i.e. lose WiiFit), and make more good Mario, Metroid, and Zelda games (not worried about Zelda as much as I am Mario and Metroid)

EDIT: And for the love of all things holy, BRING BACK DONKEY KONG!

Saw this thread. Hate stupidity. I must say. The hardcore/softcore has no value. Good game = Good game not if good game =/ good hardcore/softcore game.

Meh, 'hardcore games' is a bit of a vague label. If you see hardcore games as M-rated first or third person shooters catered to a select group of male teens and adolecents olds I certainly agree with him. I personally consider the term 'hardcore' meaningless and prefer looking at the quality of games, no matter what their target audience is.

Some of Nintendos games are the most fun I've ever played. So that means Hardcore games can't be fun... Eh, I'll stick with my Mario, Metroid, Zelda, and Kirby then.

Why does the Wii need to be hardcore? If you want hardcore games, play your PC, 360, or PS3. Even the DS has Pokemon and Professor Layton.

They make games that appeal to "hardcore" players
They just don't make "hardcore" games full of tits, blood & swearing
I feel like quoting this for those who missed out.

We don't know what Reggie means when he says 'hardcore' as the term has been liquidated into a slushy paste for years. If he means that Nintendo doesn't do tits, blood, and swearing then he's absolutely right and that's nothing to be upset about. By the gods I think this is what he is probably referring to. If not, then why are we even listening to Reggie?

I suddenly have this overwhelming urge to play Pokemon for hours on end. If you will excuse me.

Hardcore games don't have to be graphic and violent. I'd consider the Metroid Prime series hardcore for example. While it has violence it doesn't have limbs and blood shooting everywhere. GAMEPLAY makes the games hardcore, not the content of gore. What most "hardcore" gamers want are games that are challenging and engaging. Wii Bowling is fun, but you can't find every little secret in it, you can't obsess to speed run, stuff like that.

An example of a hardcore game that's bright, crazy and colourful: Super Monkey Ball on the gamecube.

Yeah it's a real big shame they're bad at making games for people who had to invent demeaning labels just to feel good about themselves.

Well no it really isn't a shame because they're kicking ass without it.

EDIT: Also, since when in the blue hell is Metroid not hardcore? this is exactly the kind of problem I have with that stupid label.
That one made me wonder too. Metroid is not as hardcore as it gets, but it is really hardcore.

Seriously though, I don't care about the lack of hardcore titles. I got a Wii for when I want to relax and a 360 for when I want to do some hardcore gaming or when I want relax with some other casual gaming with Arcade games.

Good thing they admit it themselves rather than Sony shouting it out for them though.

I think the casual-pandering developers are starting to learn that, while a shallow production is a great introductory production for a body of people who have never done that thing before, it makes for a really lousy follow-up act.

In other words, casual-pandering, based on the understanding that developers target casual players with the belief that they know next to nothing about video games and essentially need to be delivered Baby's First Video Game, produces one-hit wonders at best.

No kidding Nintendo, we noticed how bad you are at it and how you opposed it even back with the SNES when you wanted violent games toned down.

How about you do us a favor and slap Metroid away from Team Ninja because they're not going to make a good Metroid game. They make action titles with ugly graphics and woman with giant breasts who always get their asses kicked. For God sakes give it back to Retro Studios the company that resurrected the series amazingly well (not to mention made the transition from 2D to 3D work) you neglected for how many years?
