I never even knew that there was supposedly a timeline. I just assumed that through each universe Link "The hero in the green cap" was a different person.
Still, you don't exactly tell the writers what to do with their story o_O
Wait, if I suggest something to the writer he won't care!? What!? I'm one fan out of thousands, maybe millions, and they wouldn't care!? :O Outrageous!!

:p

They pulled the FF card on us...
I thought it was Ocarina of time then Majora's mask, then most of the other games, and the latest in terms of timeline being Windwaker since it is in game declared to not be the same Link and take place in origional Link's Hyrule's future.
I don't usually like to do this, but for my own sake (since it wont affect others)

I think you have the split backwards, child goes to Majora, adult goes to Wind Waker which explains why Ganon was able to come back without a hero to deal with. Yes I do have a timeline, it's not bad.
AS screwed up as MGS's? MAH DEAR BOY, THAT IS AN UNDER STATEMENT. Off hand I cannot think of a single franchise that breaks its own canon more thoroughly than LoZ. Put like that, I would say it is a trait to be cherished by its creators. Plus all of those fan-made theories make my head hurt.

From reading the posts on the first half of this thread I don't think a lot of people even watched the damn video.
I think it was incredibly well thought out, and sure the guy was a bit cocky, but I would be too if I was clever enough to deduce that.
The petition is stupid however if he had left it at Nintendo's response, Nintendo would have gone out looking like a fan-ignoring company.

I really don't understand this - so the guy's that MAKE THE GAMES claim there's no timeline, yet the obsessive fan who in no way effects the games at all claims there is?

So now a standardised PR letter referencing what Aonuma said when Wind Waker was released ("No timeline! Bleh!"), and who then later contradicted himself when Twilight Princess was released ("There IS a timeline! Bleh" because things changed and they had to find a specific place to fit TP in, according to him) suddenly becomes fact. I don't buy it until it comes straight from the horse's mouth, in the present day. I don't care what any such timeline is, but to dismiss the notion of any chronology whatsoever between the games is just stupid, considering both the games and Miyamoto/Aonuma themselves have suggested elements of continuity (around the time of TP, and also mentioned that a written timeline exists on one of their PCs). Either way, it's a cop out, whether it's by PR or them. They talk about developing the story aspect of the games more, but that just seems pointless when nothing is connected and gives them an excuse to exploit using Ganon yet again, while TP sets it up for Ganondorf being subdued for awhile (if not forever).

And as for the "Link is different except where otherwise noted." We already knew that, and again the games themselves made this clear.

That's rich! I always felt those timelines took things to far. But then again, I would've liked to see it confirmed, which would've shown that Nintendo can create deeper stuff, not just limited to comedic characters and flimsy plotlines.

Yeah, you'd think he'd learn after being killed so many times. It's like he's a reoccurring villain in several episodes of Scooby Doo.

What I'm more interested in, is that the royal family always names the daughters Zelda. Even more interesting, they always get daughters. And here's a really weird one, why won't they put out when the Links save them? I mean, not even a kiss on the cheek. Every Zelda seems to have the same personality, it's like they're possessed by a ghost. With Princess Peach it's understandable, she is the same person who fell on her head as a child, but one of them should at least thank him for selflessly saving all of Hyrule. Or is he supposed to walk home without a reward. But I digress, maybe they'll answer these questions in the next game. And maybe I'll stop eating crisps, instead of promising myself I will.

(Also, it should be called Legend of Zeldas
Or any villains period, who dealt with the Scooby Doo gang. They were always really dumb.

They Royal Family probably does have other children, but they're loser deadbeat sons, so you never see them.

And she does put out, it's in the extended & uncut versions that haven't been released yet for certain legal reasons. XP
I'm pretty sure Nintendo would rather kill themselves than even hint about sex in one of their games and lose their precious "family friendly" image...they need that image to attract droves of small children, and, consequentely, pedophiles to buy their systems and make record sales numbers so that Miyamoto can afford to buy another whorehouse to go on his 5 mile long, 30 story yacht...maybe I'm just bitter that I don't have a yacht... :(
Eh... You've obviously never heard of one of their rather more obscure titles they released in Japan years ago. (Unfortunately, my research skills have let me down, and I can't remember what it was called)
Aside from which, there's Super Mario Sunshine...

What's that you say? How does that imply sex?
...
Well, Bowser Jr. appears to be under the delusion that Princess Peach is his mother...

>.< - I think that kind of speaks for itself.

They won't outright say certain things, but they certainly can imply them. XD.

That was always my thought on the subject. It is interesting to view the theories proposed by video game nerds with too much time on their hands, but it seems they are all for not. Also, creating a petition to force Nintendo to create a timeline is the dumbest thing I've ever heard (today).

I can understand Nintendo's arguement, that says to me, "They're just games. Have fun."

But what's the point of being a fan if you can't have the water-cooler discussions/arguments? If anything, Nintendo should give the guy a pat on the back and say, "Nice work. We're glad you like our game. Here's a T-shirt."

Truthfully I'm only casually into Zelda and it shocks me that this much time was spent on people coming up with a continuity when it seemed obvious that they were all stand alone stories using a generic protaganist. I mean even the back story in the various "instruction books" made this fairly clear.

Trying to reconcile the timeline and the way things play out seems insane given how most of the games start and the way supporting cast (like say Zelda herself) are handled.

I think Nintendo could have saved themselves an upcoming headache of nerd-rage had it occured to them to use some differant (but similar) protaganists rather than recycling the same green clad elf for a bajillion incarnations.

Final Fantasy managed to use the same name and a lot of the same characters without causing this kind of thing (as far as I've seen) by mixing up the protaganists and giving the world a differant name most of the time.... admittedly though they are starting to cause themselves some problems with the whole Ivalice thing though (but that is fairly recent comparitively speaking, and I mostly try and avoid Ivalice-lore arguements).

There are many cases where I cheer for the fans and think that companies are out of line... but really... I can't side with the fans here.

How can the Zelda games be directly linked to each other?

- Windwaker starts with a young Link on an Island and Hyrule is found much later in the game as a city below the surface of the water.

- Ocarina of Time starts with a young Link living with Elves and there is no ocean whatsoever.

For me, it was very clear from the start that the Link-character is just a normal boy chosen by faint to become a hero.

.
.
.

Hey, but even if I was completely wrong... a petition about something like that... get a life my friend.

I didn't really care about the timeline, only the diffrent adventures Link went on. But ocarinahero10 explained the timeline perfectly, so nintendo should acknowledge it.

I just some it up with are they not all called 'Legend' ... meaning story, not fact. Different stories, with one protagonist hero. I think personally, I haven't played ALL of them, but enough ... it's better left as individual games, with seperate stories.
