Honestly can't see any use for this aside from the Wii Fit games, and then only as a heart monitor/medical device. I can't imagine they would specifically design any other game using this as an actual game mechanic. I'd love to see the lawsuits resulting from people having heart attacks or aneurysms from trying to speed up or slow down their pulses to beat an ogre.

Wait, they are not going to say what it is for, but they just want people to buy it anyway? You would have to be either a true to the core, sheeple, Nintendo fan or an idiot. No offence to anyone

There's no way I could buy that thing without thinking that someone in Washington is reading me fingerprints... I could just be paranoid.

Its not a question of "how would it work?" for me. Its a question of "why the hell would I care?".

It's not really that hard to imagine them making use of this, is it? I mean, the thing checks your pulse, so obviously it will be able to do things like, require you to get you pulse up/down as part of an objective, for example keeping it down in an exciting game or getting it up in an exercise game. Alternatively, it could be a way to figure out if a game is "pushing" you too hard, and to level off the difficulty (or to make it harder). It's a pretty 1-dimensional input, but I can definitely see some interesting uses anyway.
Perhaps in a horror game? I mean, think about it. When you're scared, your heartrate rises. Theoretically, with the correct programming, they could develop a game that tested what scared you most; I.E., monsters jumping out, spooky, unidentifiable sounds, or perhaps just plain shockers. The game could then, once again, theoretically, implement that to change the game to scare you as much as physically possible.

If they didn't think of that, then I am officially smarter than Nintendo. YEY~

Is my FINGER the only thing I can put in it?

Good call Reggie, I'm liking the sounds of this thing when I use my IMGANINATION (wink) too.
Ha ha, that's the first thought I had when I saw this too.

I'm not sure if there is a pulse to measure there, but you'll never know until you try... I wonder if it would work like one of those 'Love Tester' machines you sometimes see in arcades?

You could hook it up and then think of different women and stuff to see who or what causes the highest readings.

Luckily I don't own a Wii, but when this is released I'll be checking Yahoo! Answers for the inevitable Wii Vitality Sensor related hilarity.

I don't get the guys argument of wait till the software to see that its "Awesome".

Even though I do not own a wii, I could see how the wiimote would work before it launched. When I saw wii fit board, I bet a friend that eventually there would be a game where you use your bum with it, and then we were shown rayman raving rabbids with bum controlled sledges.

With the wii vitality sensor, what the fudge?
Are we going to tell gamers "yeah, your overweight, and your hearts about to give out".

At least Sony and Microsoft have some kind of grip on reality with their enhancements (Albeit sony loses points for their console launch stratergy and microsoft loses points for involving Peter Molyneux in launching Natal).

I got good odds on this flopping, unless the next batch of wii game releases include subliminal messaging.

You know what, this is a plausible idea for that... thing.

Maybe.

I think Nintendo are too ahead of themselves. Or perhaps the filters that kept.. questionable games coming out of Japan are failing. Whatever the reason, I'm enjoying this, seeing what they'll bring next. Enjoy the ride, anger and rage never did good to anyone.

I agree that this one seems a bit obscure, even for Nintendo, but I'm actually a firm believer that this could be implemented well for survival horror games.

Imagine after some kind of scare, you end up hiding in a wardrobe, and monsters are searching for you. The game tells you that you need to lower your heart rate by breathing exercises or something similar, and the game keeps throwing scares at you. You don't calm down, you're dead.

Or, some kind of sniper game where you have to do something similar to take a shot.

That's just my idea of what it could be used for.

So theres all this outrage over a simple little finger sensor but the Emotiv http://emotiv.com/
Which basically reads your brain doesnt bat anyones eyelids ?

I sense fanboi-ishness, quick arm yourselfs with hammers with which to break their pointless posting fingers.
Bah, it was expected, it's always expected.

That being said though, the link you posted is similar to what Iwata and Miyamoto saw nearly a decade ago, which was an interface that let you control a robot with your mind. Apparently they hadn't shut up about it since, so you can almost see the similarities, perhaps that might be in the successor for the console.

why should we care about this yet? software moves hardware. either they'll make awesome games for this and people will buy it, or they won't and we won't. personally i don't see any real applications beyond the obvious, but i'm withholding judgment for now.

Um, because the Emotiv is awesome? I mean, controlling a game wItH yOuR mInD sounds awesome, what the hell would you do with the vitality sensor?

Bah, I think most people are up in arms with this because frankly they announced it on E3 and are making a big deal out of it. I mean, you've got to admit, a peripheral that senses your heartrate does sound a bit.......stupid. A heartbeat is not a brainwave after all. But I'll withhold judgement until I see games for it.

That doesn't stop me from making an Epic-Face palm....

on a positive note i guess it kinda nice to see Nintendo do something instead of just watching the money roll in but this just seems like another bit of plastic for the console

When I see the Wii vitality sensor I thought it was a joke. But I guess it is true. Nintendo is now catering to the casual gamers.

At least show a bloody demonstration on how the vitality sensor works with games.
