First thought: How the hell am I supposed to play a video game when my finger is in that thing?

I think I get it. Its to measure your blood pressure whenever it spikes due to Nintendo continuing to do stupid shit like this
Kinda like a seismograph, the data streams to Nintendo's headquarters as a world-wide aggravation meter, and the data is displayed throughout the color spectrum, Red being none at all, and blue being pants-blown. This info is set up to be streamed to a 30 ft radius globe at Nintendo.

Serious, a pulse metre as an input device? What crap - seriously guy, I could see how the balance board and Wii mote could work before their release, but frankly this is just ridiculous.

It seems Nintendo is trying to latch onto the hack / mod community that has taken to using Wii control devices for robots and the like. Personally, I like to see them experimenting with alternative control devices.

The latest peripheral appears to be a Pulse Oximiter [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse_oximeter] - which measures both the pulse, and how much oxygen is in the blood. Have you ever put a pen light in your nose as a joke (or because you wanted to see if it would fit)? Notice how it makes the flesh glow red? Well, a pulse oximeter measures variations in the intensity of the red to determine the oxygen saturation of your blood. Not so special for the hack / mod community - 2 new variables better come with a really small price tag.

If anything, they're probably releasing this to cover legal issues from Wii Fit players dying from overuse. High scores are a powerful reason for people to keep exercising (to excess), and that can actually be just as dangerous for your heart as eating cheeseburgers and couch surfing.

What the heck is that thing? We now have games that check our pulse?

Is this a joke? Someone tell me this is a joke.

What's next? An attachment that pricks your finger and checks your blood sugar? Maybe give a blood cell count?
You've probably guessed the "vitality sensor plus."

Yeah, I don't get it either.

What IS it intended to do anyway? Tell you if you're lying when you make a Mii or something?

The problem Nintendo faces making a generally gimmicky console is constantly inventing new peripherals and mediocre games to match. I would forsake any new Wii 'accessory pack' for a small assortment of decent games.

The crowning achievement in Nintendo's endless line of Wii accesories, becasue it's the only one that seems to have little or no practical purpose (other than Wii Sports of course).

I just wish Nintendo would spend less time creating bizzare peripherals and passing the Wii off as some electronic Total Gym. Spend it on making a decent title, perferably one withour happy Miis on the front playing musical instruments, or fishing, or whatever.

I don't get the fuss over it. It isn't going to hurt you, and it isn't going to make gameland a worse place to be. You never know, it might be put to good use, by giving you scares when your heart rate drops too low or something.

Fils-Aime compared the Vitality Sensor to the confusion that surrounded the Wii-Mote, saying: "We probably had a similar conversation about the Wii Remote: how is this going to work, how is it going to work with the games that I want to play--I don't get it."
I'm sorry, what? Who had doubts about the Wiimote? Immediately upon seeing its design and finding out how it was supposed to work, I thought it was downright brilliant. The possibilites were vast and intriguing. Certainly I'm not the only individual who noticed its raw potential.

The vitality sensor does not compare to the Wiimote in the least. Its applications are absurdly limited in comparison to the controller, and quite frankly, I can't see this as anything more than a mere gimmick. As someone said before, this could have some marvelous potential in the field of horror games, but other than that, there's not much to it.

Either I'm too ignorant to see the incredible potential of this product, or Nintendo's success has gone to its metaphorical head to be touting this as though it was some amazing device that will shock the gaming community with its awesomeness.

Possible uses: feedback in a shooting game ie if your heartrate is high then your aim goes to shit so you have to stay calm to get through it. The horror aspect someone else mentioned, remember the Eternal Darkness game on the Gamecube with the Sanity Meter, making trippy shit happen when the character was scared? Now it's when you get scared.

Don't get me wrong I don't think Nintendo will implement this in any useful way and I am sick of all the attachments for the Wii but the fact is it could be very cool.

Think I read somewhere about a similar device in development that attaches to one eye, like a monocle, that registers pupil dilation and blood flow...

No doubt it'll be bugged to hell and they'll probably end up releasing the Wii Vitality Plus or something to make even more money.

Anyone who has heard of the interactive meditation game 'The Journey To Wild Divine' will see the potential applications of this instantly. It's not a terible idea, it's actually a stroke of genius, and I seriously dislike nintendo these days so it's not a easy thing to admit.
