It's a bull mastiff. Why was it inside with a nine year old child in the first place?
Dogs have personalities just like people and the stereotypes for them are just as true as they are for people.

Some of the softest dogs that I know are mastiffs.

I can agree with this. There are more dog bite incidents out there with little yappy dogs attacking people than bull mastiffs. So saying that all big dogs are dangerous in the company of kids is off the mark. Big dogs just get more press.

That and this one took a piece of girl with it.

If the barking from the game was what enticed the dog why didn't it attack the DS instead of the little girl. Well I can't wait for the future where dogs will be part robot and cannot attack humans because of SCIENCE.

You people should know that large dogs are the least aggressive ones, especially towards kids.

Could be bad training or could actually be the kids fault for kicking a dog.

Did they ever consider that it might be the fact that the dog was poorly trained... and very large?

Hmm... Saracen.
I there some kind of subtle manipulation here, or is it just me being crazy?
On the serious side, this is quite tragic. She's lucky to be alive, that dog could've easily killed a grown man.

I've had a lot of experiences with mastiffs, they are big dogs with a gentle and protective demeanor. Because of their size they can easily accidentally hurt smaller children. Parental supervision and plenty of training are required when having a mastiff around kids, even then its not always the best idea. They are dogs that were bred for war and guarding estates, not for playing with children. If that dog wanted to kill that little girl she would be in pieces, it was likely subduing/subjugating a perceived threat. Simply keep big dogs separate from kids, either in another room or in a kennel.

They damn well had better have put the thing down if it did that.

Also, it sounds more like a whole pile of things other than the game. A poorly trained dog, the kid kicking the dog, having the dog inside with a little girl in the first place...

But yeah, good call granny. Let's blame the game.

1/ Its the Daily Mail. Therefore, anything published by them is automatically complete crap. I'm actually suprised they didn't blame foreigners.
2/ Why is that monster in the house with children?
3/ They say she kicked this thing? Well this is a good lesson for her - don't mistreat living things, they will fight back.
4/ How could the sounds of a dog barking possibly have sparked this!? Are you telling me this dog has never heard the sound of ANOTHER dog before? If something so common as that makes this thing attack children, it shouldve been put down years ago!
5/ I don't see why all games should be banned even if it was the cause. Television and film both feature dogs - and nobody has ever decided to attack the Television/Film industry and try to ban them for including dogs in their productions. They could so easily have been the "culprit" over videogames.
6/ People are always looking to ban videogames and will take any available opportunity to do so. This is not a revolutionary story in the slightest!

It's a terrible tradgedy but it's not the game's fault, if anyone should be blamed it should either her parents or the owner for not making sure both the dog and girl wouldn't be left alone.

Because of course, dogs are well known for reacting aggressively to the sound of other dogs, and will randomly attack nearby humans because they heard possible dog intruders

...no, wait a minute, that's complete bullsh*t, dogs don't think like that at all. What was I thinking?

Oh right, I wasn't...

Well isnt that the dogs fault not the games?
If its not trained well enough not to know to not bite someone in the face then it shouldn't be let around people.

That dog was obviously badly trained. And it's not the game's fault the same thing probably would have happened if she was watching animal planet.

Basically this. While the attack could have been entirely coincidental, having a dog like that around a 9-year old is probably not the best idea.

I'm full-grown and I'm nervous around dogs that physically imposing.
I'm scared of normal dogs and I know in the uk the average child under 16 is a misbehaving brat but I see how the game could have been part of the problem but to be honest all that dog properly needed would be a grudge (enjoying child) and a thread (bark of nintendog) but I think the spin will be that nintendogs will cause dogs do attack not that you should be couches around BIG AGGRESSIVE DOGS.

Any dog that might attack a human (in this case a child) because it thinks it barked. Deserves to be put down. Not because the dog is stupid, but rather that the dog could perceive a human as a threat, which means the dog was unstable to begin with. Maybe the video game had something to do with it, I doubt it. While I don't think the little girl kicked the dog (as the neighbor might have something to hide, like using the dog for dog fighting, which is popular in the UK and is illegal) I feel that even if the video game did have some bearing on the attack video games could hardly be demonized for this. An unfortunate coincidence yes. However, one thing that I can say. Is that a Nintendog wouldn't have attacked the little girl as a real dog would have. I wonder what the girl was doing over there left alone with the dog unsupervised anyway. Where were her guardians? Clearly there might be something else at fault here.

Hey, look! Another violent incident at the hands of an already violent, crazy individual, and someone is blaming a game!
