Nintendos "Third Pillar"

Originally when the Nintendo DS was first made it was supposed to be a third pillar. "Nintendo stated that it would not be the successor to either the Nintendo GameCube or the Game Boy Advance, but rather it would be considered a "third pillar" alongside the other two consoles." The Nintendo DS failed at this goal so badly it should have been given a trophy, and to top it off they gave it backwards compatibility well still claiming that it wasn?t a replacement. It?s like me giving you a steel dagger for you to have with your iron dagger, but still offering to clean and sharpen your iron one too. This third pillar thing got me thinking. They pretty much killed the GameCube with the Wii, even with backwards compatibility it still isn?t made for GameCube games. Here?s the idea, for a new try at the ?third pillar? idea, a Nintendo console based on high definition graphics and powerful processors. They can continue with handhelds and motion control without having to worry about falling behind.

The brilliant idea about this is their consoles would be the cheapest. Imagine having to pay fifty dollars for a wire for your new machine. Once you have it mass produced and everyone?s buying it, the value for the wire goes down to twenty-five dollars. Now you have to overcharge all of your machines by twenty-five dollars. What if it wasn?t just that wire? This would mean a new PS3 would be worth less than one created six months ago. The longer you wait the cheaper the components are, the lower you can sell it for, and then you have a larger market. Do you think that Nintendo would benefit from creating a conventional series of consoles, if so what would they be like, and would you buy one of them?

Edit: I've been posting for the last week, and no one's welcomed me to the escapist. -_-

So what you're saying is that Nintendo's next console should be for core gamers. Where have I heard that before?

Well not exactly, it would be branching out so they could gain the loyalty of core gamers without giving up on the motion-control minions.

I don't think Nintendo cares, looking at the graph below:

is there one of those for the world wide sales?
Yes, although not copy/pasteable. (That I could find)

Nintendo DS World sales: 107,750,000
Sony PSP: 51,600,000

So twice as many DS's sold, worldwide.

Well, yea. The PSP is marketed toward more of the older generation, and the DS is marketed towards more of the younger generation. The younger generation is in general MUCH less tighter on money than the older generation, so you get more sales. Nintendo has lately been about making more money and catering less to the core fans.

Does Nintendo even have core fans anymore? :/

However, whether or not this is true, younger people were still the ones buying the psp, and the older demographic went for the DS. The difference between the two seem to be that the DS simply appeals across demographics, the PSP does not.
Wow.. Really? I've only seen highschoolers with the PSP and the younger kids with the DS. That's pretty surprising.

Meh, Nintendo knows where the money is, and that's where they'll stay. If the casuals stop buying their shit, then the Big N will start marketing more hardcore products again. That's how they work.

THATS why Im anti-DS! I read that when I heard about DS and was avoidant of it! I still am hoping for the next Gameboy, even if it is but a dream. I should try to find where they said that again...

That's because I hadn't seen you until now. ;¬)

[hr]Welcome To The Escapist![hr]

An interesting first thread to me seems like some interesting topics to come from you. However Wii HD? That's something analysts (like Michael Pachter [http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/pachter-wiihd-still-coming-xbox-in-third-by-2015/]) have been harping on about for the past year. The only way I could see that working is if they can up-convert existing games, which is apparently possible.

The thing is, if they release that then that might mean they want to go the full 10 years. I have never seen the Wii as a decade console (even if it is my favourite one). I think I wouldn't mind seeing what else they have up their sleeves come 2011-12. If they can release WiiHD and a new console by 2012, then cool. I don't really mind if they don't release a WiiHD, it would help them regain lost market share though.

EDIT: Actually, is this your first thread? I didn't even ask.

Also, the third pillar was to be regained in the last three years, because Nintendo had a new handheld in the works, but they scrapped it. Probably because the DS and DSi made so much as is. Also they are making far too much money, this third pillar can be brought upon when sales slump.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure 'High Definition Graphics' don't exist, as HD is just the resolution they can be played in, so it's the visual output more than anything. Not really complaining, just don't like seeing that. ;¬)

And I'm tired, and have no clue if any of that made sense. Night.

with some companies, even though production cost is lowered they still keep prices high for higher revenue (i.e they make more money) so, although the theory is there, most companies are only out to make money so your idea may not work.

Behind all that mushroom popping cuteness, Nintendo are just another soulless, evil corporation looking for the most efficient way to get our money. They don't give a shit about core gamers, or any gamers for that matter. They're just going after the money.

Do we really need another console that's exactly like the others?

I say we should let the casual gamers have the wii, and the "hardcore" gamers can play the PS3 and 360. I don't see what the big deal is.

I thought the first rule was: don't talk about drama club.
