Not an expert, Chris, but I am pretty sure Chess *also* has some optional house rule finicking.
Anyway, why can't you check if the mike is plugged in after 10 seconds of filming? A "sound check" if you will.

Hey. "Check" is a word you can use in financial circumstances and in chess! They must be the same game!

The fates didn't want you to make this video because you are both horribly horribly wrong. First of all, Monopoly shouldn't even BE in a list of good board games, much less the BEST board game. Chess is okay, but Go completely trumps it. Still, you both need to expand your board game horizons as we have hit a board gaming renaissance in the past few years and there are much more enjoyable, thematic, and just plain GOOD games these days.

Go play some simple entry level games like Ticket To Ride, Carcassone, King of Tokyo, Pandemic, Tsuro, or try a deck-building game like Dominion or Trains, or even just a party style game like Coup, The Resistance, or Werewolf. Go from there to more advanced titles like Dead of Winter, Ghost Stories, Archipelago, etc. All of which are definitely better than Monopoly, and arguably Chess.

Settlers of Catan would be a good suggestion as well

Barry? What's Game Grumps doing in Oregon?

Also, from personal experience, Monopoly can kill friendships... while Chess just bores friendships to death... So, I declare that Connect 4 is the true king of games...

I fucking love Ticket To Ride... Who knew building railroads could be so much fun?

I sorry but Chess is class as a board game??? Even as a two players only game, I still find 2 players games like Battleship and Connect 4 class as an board game. Well ok on Wiki, it IS class as a board game afterall...

I refuse to watch the video because of the nonsensical Title.
Also the answer to this question is obviously Twilight Imperium...
Or was it Suburbia?
Or Caverna?
Pandemic?...

I agree with chess being on here, although you could switch it out with go and you'd still have the same amount of people complaining about it.

Honestly, I think the other side of this should have been a deck of cards. Monopoly takes too long and it brings out the worst in people (plus I don't think it's as popular internationally). A deck of cards fits all of the criteria and has an infinite amount of play options.

How is Monopoly even a contender? It was developed specifically to not be fun and teach people about how real estate ownership lets individuals snowball to total domination rather than actually requiring hard work or intelligence.
I don't think anyone actually ever plays Monopoly, people just have it because it's considered the "standard board game".

True, that would be a good suggestion in this case. I've gotten tired of Catan after just a few plays, so I decided to avoid it, but there are plenty of people who do like it and it was the gateway to new board games for many people.

Chess is on a league of it's own... you can't compare it with monopoly... Chess wins!

It's a game you play on a board, with pieces that you move around said board. What else would it be? Also, what were you saying about Battleship and Connect 4? It feels like your sentence cuts off half way though.

OT: Chess. Monopoly is a fucking terrible board game. It's literally all luck, considering nobody EVER trades anything, it just comes down to the rolls of other people being in your favour and your rolls making you miss spots where you need to pay. I don't think I've ever finished a game of Monopoly in my life; it takes fucking ages and there's almost no fun to be had.

Not only that, it's just not a good game. The optimal strategy/strategies are easily solvable and the rest of the game relies on pure dumb luck of the dice. Not to mention everything after most or all of the properties have been purchased (the end game if you will) is a game of keep rolling until everyone but the winner runs out of money. The amount of actual interesting decision making that goes on in the game is only marginally above that of snakes and ladders.

At least Risk wasn't on there. Monopoly may ruin friendships, but Risk can rip families apart!

Anyone who argues monopoly is a good board game is fricking retarded. The only reason I even own it is because the previous tenants of my house left it here and even owning it barely comes down to more than cannibalizing it for pieces to use in other games.

Shit man I'd rather not play a game than play monopoly.

At least chess is always just chess. Monopoly you play and then years later you hear people talking about monopoly and your like 'WTF are you talking about? none of that exists in monopoly, all you do is move around a board and buy stuff...' and they you find out you were actually playing junior monopoly and that the real thing is way more complicated.

Championing Chess over Go/baduk/weiqi? pfft! the latter is a superior game to the former in every regard.

my hipster-ish comment aside, I guess it was an okay comparison. Monopoly is too luck-based for my taste, but I admit to enjoying it from time to time.

Haven't played chess since high school, though. due to aforementioned board game elitism.
