Done it before, not out of choice. Was deployed to Baghdad and had to pull guard shifts and patrols for a week straight. Nicotine, Stacker 2, and Monster (thanks to a church group that send PALLETS of the stuff to us) kept me going the whole time. Swear to God by day 4 I was hallucinating.

The actual "Record" is 2 Weeks with little to no sleep, which caused Death in a Minor due to his Mother forcing him to stay awake, bound to a chair throughout the entire night.

Yes Parents can be screwed in the Head too.

That being said, i once managed 2 1/2 Days, or 60 Hours straight without Sleep, simply keeping going by Willpower alone, and the lazyness to actually go to bed. By that Point i wasnt as sleepy as one might think, you literally get to a state where you are so tired that you arent anymore, its like you overshot the "im sleepy so i better go to bed"-phase.

Of course there are side-effects, not sure which apply, given that not everyone would actually get the same ones, i.e. one might be hallucinating after day 2 while another guy only gets there after day 5, to use that as example.

I actually went to bed after the 60 Hours because, while not actually sleepy in the normal sense, my behaviour started to frighten me. Im by no means a very nice Person to begin with, which apparently only gets worse the longer im awake. So yeah, you may learn something about yourself on the way there, which potentially you wouldnt like to know.

Quick Edit: Oh and you may as well factor in a increase in Hunger and Thirst. Which means you will eat and drink more because your Body is requiring the Energy Intake to keep going. Which is essentially what Sleep is for, its a "Battery Saver", i.e. if you dont save energy, you have to keep adding.

A simple enough question, is staying awake for 1 week straight dangerous? I made a bet with a couple of my friends about it.

No I won't be driving or doing anything that I shouldn't be, also I'm not doing drugs.
its not possible. you can stay awake for at most 4 days without chemical help.

and if you try you will be fucked ;-)

unless you are using chems, you will mostly fall into phases of microsleep after about 3 days, one of the first things i learned while in the army was getting sleep everywhere and anytime...

that being said your cognitive function can function pretty well with only 1-2 days without sleep, everybody who was on university has experienced that firsthand ;) after 3+ days you're walking dead...

Genarally, they say you get brain damage after 5 days and death around 10 days. But as all biological matters it all individual!

There have been a number of studies on this (I'll let you find 'em yourself). In short, yes. It's dangerous. After about 24 hrs of no sleep you're comparably affected to drinking roughly 10 standard drinks (off the top of my head). It doesn't improve.
That is true, I Barely slept at all literally last night and I can barely walk or even think straight.

I feel terrible after just one day without sleep. So a whole week would probably kill me. Of course I would probably just pass out long before that happened. I have a very hard time trying to stay awake.

I think it is after like 3 days you have a chance of dying from sleep deprevation.
I think it's that by 3 days without sleep you are already dead. Could be wrong though.

btw I keep seeing longest without sleep who survived, but does anyone remember FFI (fatal familial insomnia), specifically Michael Corke?

I'd post the documentary but youtube has seemed to have removed all traces of it, and I can't find it anywhere...

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJzZcFoT-1A BWAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!!
Jesus fucking Christ, that is TERRIBLE!

Seriously, if the OP is not scared after seeing this video, than maybe he is indeed of the required intelligence level to accept such a bet.

Yes, in fact it is dangerous in both the long and short term. Don't do it!

Nah. You can do 6 nights without sleep. I think 8 nights is the limit. After that it starts getting dangerous. Well depends on the person offcourse. But still its not a good idea. There won't be any permanent damage but you will feel like shit for 2 weeks or so. You're gonna screw with your biological clock.

Extremely dangerous. After night 1, your tired. After night 2, your exhausted. Night 3, your delirious, after that you get violently ill, more delirious, and you cause yourself permanent damage.

Speaking from experience, I can tell you that it IS possible, just incredibly unpleasant. When you get halfway through day 2 you're probably going to start to hate life and everything involved in it, and generally not be a pleasant person to be around. Granted, my bouts of lack of sleep are stress related so that may be a factor in the mood department.

Seriously though, don't do it. Whatever the terms of the bet are, it isn't worth it. At best you'll feel like someone's been periodically kicking you in your joints for the whole time. At worst you'll start to see shit WHILE you feel like shit.

Not dangerous as such, you'll fall asleep before you die and you won't die after a week without sleep, but I severely doubt that you'll make it that long. It also varies from person to person, some can go ages without sleep and feel fine, whereas others go batshit crazy. The old world record holder had paranoid delusions after about a week, and thought that people were putting poison in his shoes. It didn't kill him, and when he had a good sleep he woke up feeling fine, but I would say its a good idea to try and imitate him

As an insomniac (chronic) I can go months without sleep, it's not fun, it hurts and the walls seem to go all funny! Missing a night of sleep for a games marathon... GOOD, missing 47 night's sleep and watching everything in slow motion... BAD.
