That's above what a lot of folk might do. Calm, understanding responses to folk are helpful in creating a good, lively conversation, not a storm. Things have gotten so divided on this website and I myself get pulled into the sides too. Honestly the fact that I've been part of this website since high school is one of the only reasons I keep coming here. This may sound like I'm lying but even back then I tried to be the calm mediator. Didn't get me anywhere and got a lot of people angry at me. Ridiculous, but I suppose the backlash ripples from things like DoA: Extreme Volleyball's latest entry and other Japanese-culture norms being railed against whence localized are bound to happen. Not happy about it, because things have the right to exist for the most part so long as they don't violate certain ethics. I've got my own personal views, but cutting content for the sake of making vocal groups happy is kinda shit.
Blech. I'm just tired as fuck of the over-offended culture that exists today, finding them just as bad as the anti-violent gaming crowd that tried and failed to pull games off the shelf due to content. People should definitely feel strongly about content getting cut and the best way to voice your opinion is contacting the developer/distributor/localizer regarding those very thoughts. What people need to understand though is what they're voicing their thoughts about. This is not censorship - this is merely the decision to cut content.

Had Nintendo or anyone else made a statement explicitly stating that "we feel like this content wouldn't be applicable in x region", then by all means, censorship petitions ahoy. But.. this is just content cut for who-knows-what-reason.

In my case, it already did once. The Australian release of Left 4 Dead 2 was censored to remove gore, remove the cop zombies and make bodies rapidly despawn. (As in actual censorship, Valve were prevented by a government body from legally releasing the game in Australia in its unaltered state.)

I just refused to buy it. Partly on principle and partly because despawning bodies really irritate me. No big deal.

Still doesn't make me froth at the mouth, tear my hair and rend my garments every time a company alters their own game of their own free will.

Here's the thing, when people complain about censorship, they don't do it from a place of fighting for their rights. They do it cause it's an undue change that is worsening their games for no reason. Call it whatever you want, I call it undue changes. What we call it doesn't matter, what it entails and what it results in ought to be the core focus of the discussion, not petty semantics from people not really interested in fixing the issue and who don't really care.

While I agree with the sentiment and I'd never actually use that phrasing (ergo the quotes) it does fundamentally point at a thing that exists. I'm trying to focus on this thing as I think it ought to be acknowledged as the reason why we have a lot of tension. It is something I perceive and while my natural reaction is not to go POSER at people, I am not in disagreement with the sentiment behind the uncharismatic terminology. In Greek theres saying that you only hear the truth from a child or a madman, it rhymes there, it was what your story reminded me of lol.

You know, I don't quite buy that. We all know exactly what Musou meant, and who Musou was talking about. Let's be frank. Musou was talking about anti-GG in general, and almost certainly about "SJW." I can't stand the passive aggressiveness exhibited by some people. Musou doesn't get to throw passive aggressive criticisms at people, and then act innocent when those people become upset. That's worse then just being rude in the first place. Go back and read Musou's opening comment. He was being aggressive from the beginning. This thread isn't even about Bravely Default. It's about digging up old rivalries.

The sad thing is that I would be very sympathetic if certain people had better attitudes. If people aren't flooding to the fans banners, maybe their attitude is a major reason why. Why should the rest of us care about a game we don't intend to buy, when the people who support it are being confrontational? Several people, including the OP, seem to be implying that, if we're not with them, then we're against them. We can't even be neutral. If we are, then its our fault that their game got "censored." And that's fine. They can think that. But don't be shocked when no one cares about their predicament. They don't get to call it a SJW conspiracy when no one's there to help them.

Fans should be trying to pull people together. Instead they're dividing the very community they need to help them, all because they can't let old rivalries die. That makes some sense. It's not uncommon for companies to make changed based on Japanese feedback. They've been doing that since the eighties.

Technically I don't, if I really want to play a game despite it being censored, I can always buy a used copy from a private seller and play it silently in private.

I will take the freedom to decide this from case to case, but as you said, I am indeed a purist, I want translation to be as close as possible to the original (that means no friggin western internet memes). There is a thing some fansubbers of Nico Nico videos do, they put annotations when they think a reference is too Japanese, that explains what this is about, I'd like to see that in games.

While I love tumblr agendas as much as the next guy, I feel like cutting content due to localization is quite different.

I'm not going to argue that it was a good thing that content was lost, since that's generally not a good thing. Do you know the reasons why said content was cut? Were you there when that decision was made?

Is it still "censorship" if this is a decision made to perhaps better suit a market it's localized for? What if the director of the game has second thoughts and figures that the game would've been more to his liking if it was changed in x or y way?

And now "actual" content got cut out for whatever stupid reason, you allowed censorship to happen and gave those companies the signal that you don't care, that it's okay to remove and alter content, now enjoy your award.

OP: Well, that sucks. Why'd it get removed? What was the localizing team who did it? Do they have a history of doing this? Context is... nice with these kinds of things, since 'shit's been removed' is pretty bare-boned and often results in a lot of knees doing a lot of jerking.

I haven't actually played the game yet myself, so I'm not 100% sure of this, but from what I have read, the endings to the sidequests were partially determined by your choices during the sidequest itself, but also by at what point in the main story that you decided to do the sidequest, with the best (sidequest) ending locked off unless you wait until a certain point in the plot, sometimes without any real indication that you can or should do this.
I, for one, tend to do every sidequest in a game like this as soon as it becomes available, and I would be rather annoyed in this situation, and that seems to have also been the consensus among many Japanese players.

Also, try not to take this as a personal attack, I'm trying to explain something calmly.

My problem with your reaction was nothing to do with how mad you were or how you spoke, it is that you hear a game being butchered, a really great game, sequel to one of the most praised jrpgs of recent times, and instead of being mortified about that your first reaction is to try and defend yourself or sjws or whomever. Who gives a flying fuck man. This all doesn't matter, it pales in comparison to ENDINGS being cut from a Jrpg sequel to a gem of a Jrpg that ended with a cliffhanger. That this is where you would focus is immensely depressing.

I haven't actually played the game yet myself, so I'm not 100% sure of this, but from what I have read, the endings to the sidequests were partially determined by your choices during the sidequest itself, but also by at what point in the main story that you decided to do the sidequest, with the best (sidequest) ending locked off unless you wait until a certain point in the plot, sometimes without any real indication that you can or should do this.

I hope this is the case. If so, this "rumor" has been horribly misrepresented.

It's starting to sound more like the Devs "enhanced" the game during localization. I believe they made some changes in the original version too.

that ... sounds positively stupid ... I have enough trouble remembering to do all side quests when it doesn't matter (you should see my quest logs in FONV/4 and Skyrim) now they expect me to keep tract of where i am in the plot as well so I can getta good ending?

Now i just fucking know i'm not bothering with the sequel. Yeah, i have high standards, but removing options/outcomes from sidequests is the kind of dumbing down we used to see back in the 90's. Worse even.
