Digging into the ground and finding hidden caverns and underground lava flows is one of my favourite things to do in Minecraft so I am excited for this!

Maybe I'm confused, but how is this different than the giant sprawling tunnels that we already have? I've found some rather large underground areas already. Will they be... Larger? Sprawlier? If there's stuff down there (I.E. objects that could only be man-made) then that's pretty cool.

All and all, it's a good thing that I started playing again.

Does anyone have any idea as to whether this update will be applied to existing worlds? I have a relatively new world but I don't want to keep working on it if I'm just going to abandon it for a more up-to-date one.

I only ask because I think I recall that the biomes were not added to existing world and this seems similar.

This - caving's been my favorite part of the game all along. If cave generation is made somehow more expansive (and possibly more rewarding in some consistent fashion), that'd be OK by me. :D

I approve of this, but this is going to change seeds big time. What was made before with such as 12345 won't be the same after 1.7. If you like making maps from shared seeds, make them now and save them.

Woah. He once said something about giving the vanilla game the ability to randomly spawn in NPC towns, and Orc towns, and Dragons and what-not. I wonder if this Ravine thing is just one tiny example of that. I hope so. I can't wait to run into an NPC village in-game.
I'll take some NPC towns apart brick by brick, just because I can.
How very creeper of you...ssssssss.

They aren't too common, but ya I have found a few myself. I need to build a little outpost down there so I can explore those better.
Just recently though, I did find this:
The seed is: 1564488598 Spawn: -40, 64, -32 which puts you in front of a big hill. The cave is around to the right. The sucker is deep in there but doesn't connect to underground. Lots of potential there, though.
Wow, that's an amazing seed you found there. Plenty of caves, squids and multicolored sheep, among other things :D

But yeah, this adventure update is probably going to be incredible.

I like where he is going with it.

As much as I hate to say it, he needs to take a leaf from Terraria and make the game more adventure oriented like this.

Remember that underground monster city he was talking about? Seriously, get to that.

I will admit I'm intrigued by the concept of Minecraft, and most of what I hear is positive, but I really don't want to play it until it's finished. The most predominant thing I hear from everyone is 'it's still in Beta.' I don't want to play it until it's finished. I'm fine with adding more updates to it after that point, but I want for him to at some point announce 'this is the finished base product. The 'vanilla' Minecraft.'
It's honestly been complete for the past 5 months. The core of the game is done, everything else he has added after that has been just extra neat stuff that you get bored of.

Plus, buy it now before the price goes up.

The idea of digging innoccously before plummeting to your death doesn't sound appealing. Although the general rule of thumb is not to dig things out from under you, so..
Sounds awesome. Brings to mind those caves they found in Vietnam.
Just a thought, though.. I think bioluminescent mushrooms would be an improvement over torches.

I'd rather have Notch focus upwards and finally increase the bloody skylimit. There is barely enough room for my massive castle complex. I had to literally dig a 500x500 hole to make the sudden dip in the surrounding terrain look vaguely natural as my castle digs 20 blocks below sea level.

Really the only problem with a higher sky is more blocks of air to render which doesn't sound to taxing for your CPU. The only other problem is fall speed, with the potential to fall faster than blocks can generate thus falling through the map. Is it just me or could that easily be fixed with a fall speed cap. All you need to do is calculate the Fatal speed so that anyone falling from X or higher will be dead. The speed increase doesn't really matter when the result will be the same.

So after 1.7 yeah. Give us 1.8 "Raising the roof"

If I sound ungrateful for the basically Free updates that is only because you never had to move 500x500x20 blocks of dirt and stone to construct the building of your dreams. So an extra 32 or 64 blocks skywards would really be a blessing.

From the sound of the article, it seemed that was what he is doing. Both may be fairly pointless in their own right, but at least Terraria has much much much more variety.

We're likely getting quests and NPCs, and we're definetly getting Pistons.

He announces a big update called "Adventure update" and puts a tiny little spoiler about adding ravines and people complain that we already have caves? No one has any idea what is being added besides "Adventure".
Stop whining.

I hope pigman towns show up in this version. I like playing with mobs on too much to really get much out of the SMP servers I have seen. Will be nice to feel a little less alone when I am in my world craftmining and minecrafting.
Imagine finding a preexisting working portal in an underground ravine, one that lets ghasts and zombie pigmen through more frequently than regular ones(I haven't seen it but Notch does allude to the possibility that nether mobs leak through).
That would be an adventure.
I built my first base into a thing like that. It had a natural little opening on the side/bottom that let me see all the monsters. If I had more arrows then, I would had taken potshots at them.

I personally just want to fill my empty city with people.
I'm glad to see I'm not alone in wanting this. I build enormous cities and fortresses which are cool but the novelty wears off when I remember that I have nothing to protect but my own immortal respawning skin. Let me go out and rescue some NPCs from dungeons or wherever and put them behind my walls.

Minecraft as a game where you build your own living breathing Minas Tirith block by block, person by person? Yes please.
