Woah. He once said something about giving the vanilla game the ability to randomly spawn in NPC towns, and Orc towns, and Dragons and what-not. I wonder if this Ravine thing is just one tiny example of that. I hope so. I can't wait to run into an NPC village in-game.
Blast, the minecraft forums are down (curse.com suffered a hardware failure) but there is a popular mod called Millenaire, it creates an NPC village (actually, multiple villages) that you can trade certain goods with and help grow. You can even customize what buildings are built via custom files you can create from scratch, the Mod creator updates it quite often and provides helpful guides to customize it.

here is a link for when the forums are back up (It is currently 9PM Central Standard Time, and the down time is expected to last no longer than 5 hours): http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1032&t=247048&sid=8b84213916af2a30041928dfbf26d222

I will admit I'm intrigued by the concept of Minecraft, and most of what I hear is positive, but I really don't want to play it until it's finished. The most predominant thing I hear from everyone is 'it's still in Beta.' I don't want to play it until it's finished. I'm fine with adding more updates to it after that point, but I want for him to at some point announce 'this is the finished base product. The 'vanilla' Minecraft.'
It's due to be released - as a full product - on 11/11/11, ironically the same day as skyrim, IIRC.

EDIT: Argh, ninjas. Teach me to read the thread first.

Dungeon keeper, mate.
It's all inspiration from Dungeon Keeper.
Don't be surprised if you dig to an area flooded with water, and then a bunch of evil magical fairies start attacking you.
Or into lava with massive intelligent dragons that you can entice with libraries.
Then the lord of the land shows up and....
I need to stop re-installing that game.

Yeah I've seen Millenaire. Never tried it, but the Yogscast did a mod spotlight on it a couple times. Seems like a good effort, but with tons of problems....like how all the townspeople speak French for some reason. Good be a way to change that though to be fair.

This is great, but unless Notch also increases the maximum height of chunks, I can see a couple of problems with this. First of all ravines like this will reveal lots of resources, and will possibly make getting iron and diamond easier, and it isn't that hard as it is. Second of all, if the ravines are made to have any sort of decent depth, there will barely be anywhere to go under the ravine, and having a pre-dug path to the bottom of the map does not make me a happy panda.

Once I found that seed I knew I wanted to share it. Those who decide to get their picks dirty in that world, please send me picks of what you do. I'd love to see it.

I may sound like an idiot saying this, but is there a mod that lets you transport to points on the map so that we can spawn on that section of the seed?
Well I would link you to the Minecraft Wiki but it would seem they are undergoing emergency maintenance at this time(Some reasons why I am sure you can imagine). But suffice to say there is a command for tp'ing to specific coordinates. But you would do so at your own risk, as there would be the chance of appearing in the middle of a mountain or tree.
You can randomly jump around a world you generated with this website tool: http://mc.42nex.us/
The top part helps you find the seed of a world you have, the bottom moves your toon at set distance increments from where you saved at. The same warning applies: It is very dangerous to do so as you may appear inside a mountain or a tree...or in a lava lake even.

Minecraft worlds are dangerous, mysterious, and unforgiving entities.
I wouldn't have it any other way. Dig on!

The one thing that I could never build in Minecraft was an underground city, orzammar style. Now I can, hopefully. Also, I would love to see some ruins or some areas that explained the presence of monsters.

They speak both english and french. The spotlight the Yogscast did was on a much older version.

Will this not spoil worlds made before the update? As the ravines won't be included in their worlds?

Terraria takes notes from Minecraft, and in turn Minecraft takes notes from Terraria.

The Cosmic Ballet continues....

Steve isn't a dwarf. In fact, there are absolutely neither dwarfs nor elves in this game. how can you speak of "fun" there?

Bah, when I get back on after the full game is released, I'm barely going to recognize the place. :'(

The naming of the updates threw me off a bit, though; if the game is not out yet, shouldn't they be numbered less than 1? Instead of 1.7, shouldn't it be 0.7?

That is... odd. I guess I never really hung around long enough to see the NPCs speak, though the couple times I walked into the trading house I got a "I'm on my way!" message from the tradeswoman. But if they normally speak french, I'm betting that is because the Mod author is European, unless I miss my guess based on his naming schemes.

Judging by how Notch added previous stuff, like changing the biomes, you just need to walk somewhere new to generate new chunks that can have ravines.

I personally just want to fill my empty city with people.
I'm glad to see I'm not alone in wanting this. I build enormous cities and fortresses which are cool but the novelty wears off when I remember that I have nothing to protect but my own immortal respawning skin. Let me go out and rescue some NPCs from dungeons or wherever and put them behind my walls.

Minecraft as a game where you build your own living breathing Minas Tirith block by block, person by person? Yes please.
I really want this too. I love building, but I never build huge fortresses or cities/villages because it just seems like a waste of time and resources for a single Minecraftian. Give me some citizens to protect!

Also, does anyone have a link to the actual tweet? I'd like to see that image full size and I can't find it on his twitter.
